actually when Shinji finally does enter Eva 01 he is released and sees the destroyed remains of Eva 02, so Asuka does indeed die. They even show a slight picture of the protruding spinal cord of Eva 02 & nothing else...

If you'v watched the series and seen Unit 03 get ripped apart and the entry plug being literally bitten in half, yet Toji Suzuhara survives, so making a certainty about Asuka's death is premature.

Seriously, they went on about how this was such a horrible and emotional death at TVTropes, but I have two problems with that:

1. ASUKA IS A FUCKING BITCH TO EVERY ONE SHE MEETS. Why would I have any empathy for this stupid whiney cow? I don't. Hurry up and fucking die already, Asuka.

2. The EVA suffered all the damage - yeah it still would have hurt but she died without a scratch. Boo fucking hoo, so horrible.

Her arm splits in half because there was a heavy syncro rate between Asuka and the eva. In this conditions, whatever happens to the eva will be reflected phisically on her. This abnormal syncro rate is caused because the eva goes berserk (functioning without any battery power).
