I believe that anybody can speak chinese. Hey most asians not native to this country (USA) are not fluent in English but they function well here in the States! They shop, they work, etc. I can barely understand them, but they are good at gesturing to me what they want to do. that's all that matters. We have body language, we have effort so we can learn chinese and we will get help if we need it.

Americans don't study foreign languages much. I have a great idea. Learn Japanese to be able to do business with Chinese. Then the Chinese will be forced to learn Japanese to talk to us. Then the Japanese will make a lot of money making cds and dvds and opening up language schools everywhere. Both the Chinese and Americans will have to suffer while the Japanese reap the benefits.

@Sassymui8 Very good point. Thing is people are more comfortable when they're speaking their native tongue. Also, it can help build better rapport if you seem to have taken the time to learn their language. It's not what language most people use that matters, it's the language that people are comfortable using that matters. I'm sure that an Arab businessman who is fluent in English will STILL be more comfortable speaking whatever his language his.
