@4hoovesnstripes These puppies are amazingly trained! :D I just got a border collie puppy this past Sunday - 8 weeks, hadn't been trained yet. He's still having the occasional accident, and although he picked up on standard fetching the first day, I want to make sure he's challenged and trained well. (For example, he's gnawing, and "leave it" and trading him a toy instead of my hand doesn't cut it... Not even a shake of the ruff!) Are there any resources you'd recommend for someone like me?
Honey , I really love those pups .it's ok dear , if u treat me as a retard . I love the way u feel towards them..I feel the same when it comes to my dog( Shadow)..u know what , I c an angel in u when u train them...all I wanna say is I love u ANGEL..and my kiss to loyal little collies ...
did you have to work with them individually before hand or did they learn from the mother/father? ive always wanted a BC but it'll be a few years until i have the space to have one
Our puppy is a border collie/brittany spaniel and she is really smart! She knew how to go outside and go to the bathroom on the grass at 7 weeks. And she knew how to play fetch when she was just 8 weeks old! Plus we are going to take her to a dog trainer in a couple of months.
I just brought home a border collie puppy, he's 12 weeks old and very very shy.
The breeder I got him from said he was the second smallest of the 6 born and kept getting pushed around, right now he follows me everywhere around the house but he is still timid when I try to pet him, what is the best way to train them? Your dogs are so obedient!
@TEAMLEGENDARYGO 1st thing to do is build his confidence... Don't allow anything to scare him and allow him to "win" at everything for now.... Give him new opportunities to build self confidence... That's (very) important right now..
they know there stuck their so they wont go unless they cant take it anymore..and also make sure u clean up the mess very well around the house dogs can smell 10x what humans can
@cookie.. i got my bc from omish people in pa.. the worms is from there mother pretty much every pup will have them.. also take him or her out every couple hrs so they know where to go..also when ur not home put it in the kenne
My BC is currently learning flyball. She also has been taking herding lessons for about 8 mo. My problem is when she comes back with the ball she will crouch down in a herding position to watch the other dogs run. She has no interest in tugging. My flyball instructor says very few BC can do two dog sports at the same time. Any thoughts? She's two years old.
I am SO impressed. I got my Border Collie at 7 and a half weeks old from, what I thought at the time a good breeder. But after taking her home, she was full of worms, wasn't even paper-trained or anything and wasn't even used to people! She never ate from a dish so I had to teach all this myself. She is now 6 months old and still not house-trained. It's driving my parents crazy and I don't know what to do!
Wow! My border-black lab mix is super eager to please but as stubborn as a mule if another dog or person is around. She thinks they are there just to play with her, getting her to focus is the hardest thing ever. Weve had her since 10 weeks from the pound and shes now 1.5 yrs. Knows her commands and is being trained to be a therapy dog, but we just cant get past her inattention if something catches her eye. Please- How did you get the mom to learn to focus like that?
im getting a border collie but nobody is at home from 8:30-3:15 do you think it would be a good idea the last thing i want to do is cause any harm to a animal
she/he would still get at least 3 hours of physical activity when we got home we have experience with a previous german shepard i live in a large house with a big backyard very close to a dog park where he/she could socialize and we are very close to a conservation park
you seem exprienced your reply is much appreciated
@kingdan1foo it completely depends on the dog but i personally never recomend border collies to be left alone that long unless they have alot of distractions or a farm to have the run of, a bored border is a destructive border and I've seen alot of border or border mixes go into pounds because people can't give them enough stimulation, if you can make it work all the power to you though =)
wow. can i ask how you trained them so well? my border collie stop mid run when i say wait, but will not drop to a down like that? and my new aussie pup will not lay without a hand signal... ?
oh and...
@1colby the white one is what is called a Pattern White. =)
@AtheidsX The white one was actually the largest puppy from the beginning, and still is. I kept the white one, Slick, and the red/white one, Scamper. Both work in Obedience, Agility and Flyball as well as helping around the farm!
@xXgreenday001xX It is important to remember that a tool will never train a dog, that is your job. relying too heavily on a tool, especially not used properly can be detrimental to your communication skills. That being said, tools can certainly be used as an aid to your communication as long as it is used as a support for leadership, body language and proper communication.
@xXgreenday001xX all dogs need a job in life and useing a clicker will speed up his training yeah but then what when u trained him every trick in the book + some what will the dog do it will get bored and it will be on u and everything u do its gonna want to do
I am surprised that the white puppy does anything. Always seems to be way behind the others - never seems to get anything - stick/ball or praise.
And I would have to agree that it looks more like and aussie then a border collie as someone stated on your other video. I breed aussies and have a pair of border collies.
@1colby At this stage, the puppies are not working for the stick or the ball, they are working because it is interesting and they are having fun with it. They are all Border Collies, registered with the American Border Collie Association and the AKC. Border collies can come in a variety of colors, including black, red, and merle, with any amount of white markings. Eyes can be blue or dark, or partially blue.
I am interested in how you did this as well. I have an 8 week old BC that is doing really well but seems to have a problem with listening as well as these dogs.
My dog will lay down and fetch separately. But she is fetching she is so focused on that she doesn't listen to anything else.
If I can get hero do it once, I can praise her for it and reward her. But the problem I have found is getting her to do it the first time.
This is fantastic. How did you teach them this? Did you teach the "down" command in isolation first, then apply it in action after you had thrown the ball? Do you enforce "down" and "stay" commands regularly? Please share!
@katzenheimer My dogs work for everything they get, the more they want the ball, the more you can get them to do for it. Start with them on a short leash (about 8 inches) and hold it while you toss the ball about 5 feet. Don't let your dog go yet, give a command to sit, only say it once and make it happen. Then, tell your dog to go get it and release the lead. Gradually, ask for more each time, never letting your dog go until you you say it can go. This will help your dog get the idea of working
The first time it was interesting and I was quite impressed. The 2nd time was a bit more "Ooohh, what clever puppies" and then it was just the same thing over and over again. It became a bit boring.
It's obvious you have a close bond with your animals and I truly respect that. It's just the video was boring :)
@LightShiningBright You don't have to keep watching it, I was only demonstrating that it wasn't a fluke or a one time happening. It was predictable, and on command.
The FIRST time my friend left his BC with me I was walking him off lead when he was confornted with an excitable boxer straining on his lead and pulling his "master" nearly over. The guy looked at me as if to say what are you going to do? So I said sit and the BC just sat there looking at the crazy dog then at the man and back to the dog, then I said come on and he trotted away to my side. Then I said to the guy, it isn't even mine.
@ooglyooogly Hahaha, I can imagine the owner of the boxer felt like a tool ;) Sometimes the owner is much dumber than the dog. It's sad but funny that his boxer is smarter than him lol.
I have a 8 week old border collie puppy named Shep and he is just SOOOO smart I can not belive it we are working on Play dead now. He knows down sit paw roll over and Peek a boo where he puts his paws in front of his face and then takes them away if I say PEEK a boo
i'm a little concerned, why would u throw a stick towards the highway, i mean it's kinda easy just to throw the other way and maybe a tad futther from danger after all u did say this was a training exercise, which wld mean u do not have total control of the situation
my animals are always in training, regardless of age. Training isn't something that you do once and then stop. I know my animals, I have a zebra that I let walk around off-lead as well and am not concerned about him running away either. Sharing a bond and close relationship with my animals allows me to trust them, experience allows me to accurately predict their behaviors.
I do have a fenced yard, but my dogs only stay in when I am not home. They all stay in the house at night, and stay on the property when I am home during the day. If taught proper boundaries and given plenty of structured exercise and mental stimulation, most dogs will remain on your property without a fence. The problem is, most people believe that since their dog can roam around, that they get plenty of exercise. As a rule, that isn't good enough...they need a job.
I'm getting a Border Collie/Aussie mix in a few months here and I can only hope that it will be as obedient and agile as yours. I guess it all depends on my dedication and patience.
Can you recommed any websites/books to help me with training?
Any of Cesar MIllan's books (The Dog Whisperer, National Geographic) are excellent for setting a foundation of leadership. William Campbell has some great books on behavior, The Monks of Newskeet also have great information. There are many, many great books out there, and there is something to learn from all of them. Read as many as possible, then use your own filter to decide what works best for you and your dog!
oh okay, i was just concerned, cuz i love your puppies and making sure they are safe. but i'm sure they are, you know. ^_^ are they all yours or are you selling them? how do you teach them to drop like that? :)
Watch Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer on National Geographic Fridays at 8...he has great leadership resourses. He also has several books that can lend insight to good leadership. It is the foundation to good training!
Awe how cute, hi I'm Lola ( you can call me) Im writing a book, debating on the name, I'm 12 , and I need info on this you really helpred me FAVS lol thx bye! I Luv BC ( ( border collies) :)
Cute puppies, where do you live & do you sell puppies? My daughter has been wanting one & I have been reading up on them to find out how they are. Thanks for the video!
I was 100% confident that I had complete control over my dog, her puppies, and my throwing ability. Would you deny it? I would not reccomend something like that to someone who did not have control over their dog.
When it comes to knowing the "control" level of your border collie, and you do KNOW that you have control, that is something that you can count on 100%! Having a B.C. myself, I can honestly say this without a doubt or hesitation. I know that when I say down to my guy, he will stop DEAD in his tracks and wait for instructions regardless of what else happens by his path. Its NOT something to be taken lightly or for granted or w/other breeds. U MUST know your dog. I believe this lady does.
how did u train them to do that? i have a border collie and i want to teach him to stop barking at everything that moves and to stop jumping on people. can you help me?
I'm not the person u asked, but I might be able to help... It looks as though she is "supporting" the Mom in teaching her pups. In other words, the pups are just following what Mom does and then "she" adds in the command word. Find out what drives your border. A toy? Treats? Once you figure that out, take a few minutes everyday to teach him a different action to replace the bark or the jumping. With my Oban, when he was 8wks old, I taught him sit (in 1 day) and then proofed the no...
jumping with "2 Paws". He sits in front all excited, wants to jump up on ppl, instead he waits for the command of 2 paws then places his 2 front paws on your legs.) Its a good compromise & works for us! Only treat him when he get the response you are looking for. They are so brilliant they need to think! They love to figure things out for themselves.
I can't wait until I can get land and have a border collie. They are such amazing dogs! I don't have much of a yard now, so I wouldn't feel good getting such an intelligent, energetic breed of dog.
I don't generally use treats with my training, but it is a matter of developing a work ethic with your dog. When you give a command, like sit or down, that command is in force until you say otherwise. It can actually make teaching the stay command obsolete. Dogs begin to love working, even without treats.
i trained my puppy to sit when he was 6 week old and i follows me around when i call him but its hard to make him to stop bitting me or other stuff ,what should i do? pleases help me!!!!
Puppies loose their baby teeth between 4 and 6 months of age. At that time, they do need to chew a certain amount, but that doesn't mean it is OK to chew on people. They can chew on designated items. Mostly, it is normally a respect issue. Dogs do not chew on leaders, they chew on equals or subbordinants. Present yourself as a leader and make sure your puppy understands that it is not OK to chew or mouth people.
I am a professional trainer of dogs, horses zebras and other exotic animals. Training for all animals is pretty much the same, it requires consistant calm leadership. All animals must be shown first what they are supposed to do, then rewarded for doing the right thing. It is up to us to be consistant with reward and corrections.
Ok, this sounds flippant, but it really is not. Make it impossible for your border collie to chase cars by putting him/her on a leash around cars. try to keep his/her attention while tempting with cars, then as your dog becomes more focused on you, remove the leash and repeat the process.
OH MY GOSH!!!! I MUST MUST MUST know what you've done. I've never ever seen anything like it. I never thought someone could have such control over an animal. It was actually beautiful to see. Do you have a training method? Or are you a trainer? Please please let me know. I'm at my wits end with my dog whom I've worked with for many hours. He won't listen to a single word I say.
We have a 9 wk old border collie that we have had for 1 week (rescue dog). He knows, sit, down, come, and hurry up (go pee). First one for us, they are awesome.
You need to kennel the dog in a appropriate size crate immediately and buy a book that will teach you how to house break a dog. With a bit of effort on your part it shouldn't take more than a couple weeks at most.
Wow. That is so nice for a puppy at eight weeks. My sister still cannot get her 6 month old Siberian to sit or come.
I will be getting a collie, and I was wondering about something. I see you have the parent working with them. Can they still learn the commands without seeing another dog or are they monkey see monkey do dogs?
Border collies are just like any other dog for the most part. Nearly any normal animal can learn, each with a different degree of ease depending on many factors, the largest being the teacher.
my border collie looks EXACTLY like the all white one you have there, no lie, freckels and all, and i never did see what he looked like as a puppy puppy :X got him when he was 3 months old...but still very cuute ^^
Wow your dogs are so incredibly obedient! Hahaha my first BC never learned learned much beyond sit and come but my second BC picks up everything at the speed of light! :) Really shows how different personalities react differently!
omg(oh my gosh) how do you make them obay. They are soo cute!!!!I have a border collie pup who's 6months old and i think your's are way more obedent! Can you give me some tips how you make them obay WITH OUT their mother with them?????????????PS:they are adorable
A super video! This one did it for us. We bought our first BC 2 weeks ago. One of only 30 in our country (Peru).
On day 1 he settled himself quite nicely. He uttered not a sound during the first night. I have NEVER seen THAT before! On day 2 he learned COME. On day 3 learned NOT to come INTO the house. On day 10 he is learning SIT. Thanks so much for this video! I am linking to it in my blog.
its amazing how a litter of 8 week old border collies are trained they must be really smart i've heard that they are quick learners but they usually can be traing at 3 months or 4 months its amazing they learned quicker than my cousins collie he had to learned at 3 months.
To start with, they just immitate their mother, then they figure out what it means and pretty soon, they are beating mom to the punch! They have fun with it.

i'm a little concerned, why would u throw a stick towards the highway, i mean it's kinda easy just to throw the other way and maybe a tad futther from danger after all u did say this was a training exercise, which wld mean u do not have total control of the situation
maidmoira 2 years ago
my animals are always in training, regardless of age. Training isn't something that you do once and then stop. I know my animals, I have a zebra that I let walk around off-lead as well and am not concerned about him running away either. Sharing a bond and close relationship with my animals allows me to trust them, experience allows me to accurately predict their behaviors.
4hoovesnstripes 2 years ago
Don't be so dramatic, the dogs don't get anywhere near the highway...Do you think the owner would risk her precious dogs?
The dogs obviously are smarter than hell and know not to go into traffic as well...
ecsgrl 2 years ago 2
just saying, as u pionted out, who wants a needless accident with such precious pups, that's all
maidmoira 2 years ago
You're annoying
ecsgrl 2 years ago
does these dogs run away when u dont have a fence?
SenorBartos 2 years ago
I am only working them in the park for a demonstration...they live in a big fenced yard.
4hoovesnstripes 2 years ago
yeah, i can see that
but that doesnt answer my question
i live on a farm but we dont have a fence
i might be me a boarder collie
would it be necessary to build a fence? or are these dogs loyal enough to stay inside our domain?
SenorBartos 2 years ago
I do have a fenced yard, but my dogs only stay in when I am not home. They all stay in the house at night, and stay on the property when I am home during the day. If taught proper boundaries and given plenty of structured exercise and mental stimulation, most dogs will remain on your property without a fence. The problem is, most people believe that since their dog can roam around, that they get plenty of exercise. As a rule, that isn't good enough...they need a job.

we have some goats that needs to be milked every morning maybe i can teach him how to bring them to me?
for the rest he should also be able to scare foxes cause there are alot of foxes in the area and they kill our chickens
sorry to bother u with all these questions but before i buy me a collie i want to make sure i treat him right
thx for the tips so far :)

I'm getting a Border Collie/Aussie mix in a few months here and I can only hope that it will be as obedient and agile as yours. I guess it all depends on my dedication and patience.
Can you recommed any websites/books to help me with training?
Thanks
ecsgrl 2 years ago
Any of Cesar MIllan's books (The Dog Whisperer, National Geographic) are excellent for setting a foundation of leadership. William Campbell has some great books on behavior, The Monks of Newskeet also have great information. There are many, many great books out there, and there is something to learn from all of them. Read as many as possible, then use your own filter to decide what works best for you and your dog!

Starshine1396 2 years ago
They don't stay out there...we are just in the park to demonstrate. I actually have a very secure yard.
4hoovesnstripes 2 years ago

my 11 week old border collie wont obey a command unless he knows that we have a treat waiting for him
chloe842 2 years ago
Watch Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer on National Geographic Fridays at 8...he has great leadership resourses. He also has several books that can lend insight to good leadership. It is the foundation to good training!
4hoovesnstripes 2 years ago
Is the use of a clicker better for training?
I never thought of the puppy getting too used to treats until I read Chloe842's comment...

throwing a stick towards a busy road, with puppies chasing it, good one... naaaaat
hendo69r 2 years ago
I was 100% confident that I had complete control over my dog, her puppies, and my throwing ability. Would you deny it? I would not reccomend something like that to someone who did not have control over their dog.
4hoovesnstripes 2 years ago
i see that u do yeah, just dont think its a good idea no matter how confident you are of ur control
hendo69r 2 years ago
When it comes to knowing the "control" level of your border collie, and you do KNOW that you have control, that is something that you can count on 100%! Having a B.C. myself, I can honestly say this without a doubt or hesitation. I know that when I say down to my guy, he will stop DEAD in his tracks and wait for instructions regardless of what else happens by his path. Its NOT something to be taken lightly or for granted or w/other breeds. U MUST know your dog. I believe this lady does.
weaveamyweave08 2 years ago
she has to say down twice on the very first throw, they are pups, next to a busy road, it makes no sence
hendo69r 2 years ago
how did u train them to do that? i have a border collie and i want to teach him to stop barking at everything that moves and to stop jumping on people. can you help me?
3Barrels6Poles 2 years ago 2
I'm not the person u asked, but I might be able to help... It looks as though she is "supporting" the Mom in teaching her pups. In other words, the pups are just following what Mom does and then "she" adds in the command word. Find out what drives your border. A toy? Treats? Once you figure that out, take a few minutes everyday to teach him a different action to replace the bark or the jumping. With my Oban, when he was 8wks old, I taught him sit (in 1 day) and then proofed the no...
weaveamyweave08 2 years ago
jumping with "2 Paws". He sits in front all excited, wants to jump up on ppl, instead he waits for the command of 2 paws then places his 2 front paws on your legs.) Its a good compromise & works for us! Only treat him when he get the response you are looking for. They are so brilliant they need to think! They love to figure things out for themselves.
weaveamyweave08 2 years ago
I can't wait until I can get land and have a border collie. They are such amazing dogs! I don't have much of a yard now, so I wouldn't feel good getting such an intelligent, energetic breed of dog.
empouse 2 years ago
I don't generally use treats with my training, but it is a matter of developing a work ethic with your dog. When you give a command, like sit or down, that command is in force until you say otherwise. It can actually make teaching the stay command obsolete. Dogs begin to love working, even without treats.
4hoovesnstripes 2 years ago
do you please wanne tell me how do you train a border collie , like train him/her sit or stay or something like that?
please
kjoskje 2 years ago
well its really easy when you use clicker training when you click they know they did something right so you praise them or give them a treat.
superchad15 2 years ago
yes i know but how do you make them stand in the right position?
like sit?
kjoskje 2 years ago

they have a theething thing and they chew stuff up for 2 years or summit
spookybabyboo 2 years ago
Puppies loose their baby teeth between 4 and 6 months of age. At that time, they do need to chew a certain amount, but that doesn't mean it is OK to chew on people. They can chew on designated items. Mostly, it is normally a respect issue. Dogs do not chew on leaders, they chew on equals or subbordinants. Present yourself as a leader and make sure your puppy understands that it is not OK to chew or mouth people.

i just got a border collie i just need to train him can u tell me what a good start i can do for him ?
SpeedyX1 2 years ago
I am a professional trainer of dogs, horses zebras and other exotic animals. Training for all animals is pretty much the same, it requires consistant calm leadership. All animals must be shown first what they are supposed to do, then rewarded for doing the right thing. It is up to us to be consistant with reward and corrections.

How do I train my border collie out of herding cars?
kerry12345 2 years ago
Ok, this sounds flippant, but it really is not. Make it impossible for your border collie to chase cars by putting him/her on a leash around cars. try to keep his/her attention while tempting with cars, then as your dog becomes more focused on you, remove the leash and repeat the process.
4hoovesnstripes 2 years ago
OH MY GOSH!!!! I MUST MUST MUST know what you've done. I've never ever seen anything like it. I never thought someone could have such control over an animal. It was actually beautiful to see. Do you have a training method? Or are you a trainer? Please please let me know. I'm at my wits end with my dog whom I've worked with for many hours. He won't listen to a single word I say.

How can I make my border collie stop pissing everywhere!? She is 9 weeks old I just got her 2 days ago.
ryankenward 2 years ago
You need to kennel the dog in a appropriate size crate immediately and buy a book that will teach you how to house break a dog. With a bit of effort on your part it shouldn't take more than a couple weeks at most.
uwgraduate 2 years ago
Wow. That is so nice for a puppy at eight weeks. My sister still cannot get her 6 month old Siberian to sit or come.
I will be getting a collie, and I was wondering about something. I see you have the parent working with them. Can they still learn the commands without seeing another dog or are they monkey see monkey do dogs?
moonlitstars007 3 years ago
Border collies are just like any other dog for the most part. Nearly any normal animal can learn, each with a different degree of ease depending on many factors, the largest being the teacher.

I am linking to it in my blog.

did you train them to down, first, or do they stop and down imitating their mother, or is there another reason?
tropikaki 4 years ago
To start with, they just immitate their mother, then they figure out what it means and pretty soon, they are beating mom to the punch! They have fun with it.
