  • They need to leave BOTH little boys, & girls genitals alone! There is NO legitimate reason on Earth to mutilate children's genitals. It's a disgusting barbaric practice that MUST be ended all over the whole Earth.

  • @kcmonster44

Until you provide a source I'll chalk it up to feminist propaganda. The foreskin contains 20,000 + the glans' 4,000-6,000.

  • u have nice titties. May be it is impossible to stop fgm because ppl are more concerned abt ur boobs and clevage rather than the sorrow of the victim. the more clevage the more fjm.

  • See, I completely support this movement. However, it's futile. Simply because the same societies that condemn FGM are indifferent about MGM aka Male Circumcision.

It weakens your stance when you don't fight for the end of genital mutilation period, because it negatively effects both young girls AND boys.

You can't say that the genitals of a young female take precedent over that of a young male's.

We have no moral high ground to stand on to tell others to stop cutting girls when we cut boys.

  • < ----- gave the 100th thumbs-up to this video. Encouragement to Julia and this important global cause.

  • you can just tell by her voice she's a feminist and feminists should be cast out. I don't agree with FGM but who are we to tell africans or others how to live their lives. We should pick the plank out of our own eye before taking the speck of dust out of others.

  • lol I give 3 hours on monday and 3 hours on tuesday to work with kids who come from disadvantaged areas of the UK. I sometimes give 2 hours on Friday to walk round the streets and give advice and help to kids on street corners. i think id be an awesome father as i care about children and want the best for every child regardless of race, sex and position in society. I don't like this women because she is bitter about her position!

  • Female genital mutilation is not the same as male circumcision. The latter is removing foreskin, whereas the former can involve removing parts of the labia and the entire clitoris. That's far more painful than just having the foreskin of the penis removed. Also, its done without anaesthetic and its used as part of an extreme patriarchal control-system over the woman.

FGM is also un-Islamic and I know many Muslims who are against it.

  • @PersianPaladin Man, where do I start.

    - All you really did was establish the difference between male/female anatomy.

    - The foreskin contains more than twice the nerve endings of a glans clitoris.

    - Circumcision is also usually done without anesthetic.

    - FGM is performed and advocated by women, and it's done for mostly the same reasons as circumcision.

  • Interesting video

  • i would rather my child become a african uneducated women. than a cold woman like you!!!

  • Good action. Now when will we discuss MGM, that is male genital mutilation, alias circumcision?

  • @tjfulopp

    Never.

  • OW!

  • Wow. This is really messed up. The world is so messed up I think the only way to clean the mess up is if everyone died. I mean seriously, there is so much f'd up s**t going on all the time that it's really tough to imagine there is anything good left. Well, I really hope your cause works out.

  • where are these little girls brothers? why don't they keep this from happening? what are the fathers thinking? cowards

  • this is the sickest thing I have ever heard of. absolutely sick. i wonder how the guys who do this would enjoy having thier cocks cut off

  • Shut up sexist woman. Why are you only against female circumcision? What about men?

  • she has nice titties

  • As a fellow competitor for the Davos Debate may I say that I am so pleased that Julia Lalla-Maharajh has won the final. Her campaign is by far and away the best issue to present and I wish her every success for the future of her campaign. A wonderful result. Well done.

  • I would gladly vote for you, where can I vote?

  • god i wanna go to one of these villages and just start picking the matriarchs and religious leaders off like fucking legless cattle. then i'd stomp their skull and piss and shit on their corpses. then id drag there body parts around behind my car smashing into all there shitty houses and killing every one except the children who id kidnap and give to people decent countries

  • I do not see the thumbs up thing to vote. This is messed up.

  • You are certainly brave to raise this extremely sensitive issue, but I am unsure whether to vote for you.

You say you want girls not to be sold as a commodity and for their sexuality not to be brutally destroyed by FGM. Nearly everyone in the world will agree with you. But although your language is forceful, your message is a bit contradictory because you are displaying your cleavage, thereby sending a sexual message yourself. This makes me question whether your concerns are genuine.

  • @22edec How dare you dismiss a woman's message because she's showing her cleavage, and if a woman wants to show her cleavage for sexual reasons that is not equivalent to somebody denying a legal minor their right to their own body and sexuality through medically unnecessary genital cutting, it's not as if women can win these arguments is it, wear something that is considered sexy and be dismissed as a slut, wear something that's not likely to be considered sexy and get dismissed as unattractive.

  • Sorry, that's my opinion. You obviously disagree. I am not against women expressing their sexuality at the appropriate time and place, but I do not think this was it. Your comment suggests that for women to look attractive, they need to wear something sexy. That contradicts the point of the video.

  • its boobs. its a body part and its not inheranly sexual. I should shoot peopel like you point blank in the face with a hollow tipped bullet in from of your family.

    jk

    but fuck you

  • there is a difference between sex and rape you sick fuck.

  • I first heard about this when I was about thirteen. I was flipping through a book in the young adult fiction section, called No Laughter Here. I knew nothing about the premise, but soon found myself light headed and utterly horrified.

This is not an issue I've heard much about since. I am fairly certain half the people I know could not tell me what a female circumcision is. It seems completely surreal.

Thank you for bringing FGM into dialog. Your speaking is eloquent and should be heard. I voted

  • A number of people have said this to me recently - that they had known about FGM but years ago - that they sort of just assumed that like other practices, it had faded out.

Quite the opposite. It is proof to me that in spite of our "globalisation" and "progress" there are still pockets of extreme human rights abuses that need to be brought out into the open.

    Thanks for your comments.

  • oh my god, did she just say that a piece of glass cuts a girls clitoris?, WTF?,

  • In some of the communities where this happens, they will use whatever they can to cut the girls. Sometimes this will be a rusty knife (which can spread HIV, as a number of girls may be cut at the same time) or a razor blade - or indeed, shards of glass. Needless to say, there is no anaesthetic.

    Thanks for your comment.

  • i know, i was just a little grossed out. but thanks for answering, you have my support

  • @fpspapasito yes and a blunt rusty knife, razors in some cases multiple girls same cutting object used on them...it doesn't hurt to ask thank you for your support

  • As a child I read about Gladys Aylwood in "The small Woman" Especially how she helped in the ban on foot-binding on girls (even babies!) in China remains in my memory! A horribly cruel tradition now unthought of. There are many good causes to fight for but this is an issue which I believe CAN be eradicated in our time. Good Luck to all candidates but Julia gets my vote.

  • I also read that book at primary school!

There are some brilliant academic studies that compare both the practice of footbinding and suttee (where widows in India were burnt on their husband's funeral pyre) with FGM.

It's an entire social change theory intervention that is needed, that ensures that in communities, no one is "left behind" by choosing to abandon the practice - otherwise it is not sustainable. It predicates the need for FGM on a girls' need to be married.

  • You have my support and all my fans, go speak for Julia

  • Dear Mashua - thank you for your support. As a woman who has gone through FGM and now campaigns tirelessly against it, your voice backing me is so important. Thank you for all of your efforts to end this. Let's hope that together, we can tell world leaders about the real impacts of FGM!

  • @JLMFGM The more I think about female genital mutilation, the wronger it seems. I used to have the 'who are we to tell people what to do in their own culture' view.

Now I think: 'what does it do to a little girl's psyche to be held down and have adults mutilate their genitals so that they can be desirable and valuable as sexual commodities...'?

  • @bongopigbo I'm reading about the young Stalin and it's obvious how the alcoholism, brutality and cruelty of his childhood and training in the priesthood (!!!) turned him in to a monster.

I'm hearing how Gerry Adams and his family were sexually abused and tormented as children. Surprise surprise.

When we abuse children, we pay many, many times over. I support your campaign, Julia because it's clearly focused on something that can be stopped.

    Good luck with it

  • @bongopigbo Bongopigbo thankyou so much for the support,

  • @JLMFGM OUR JULIA we need you FGM have been overlooked for decades and our leaders ignore the pleas you have my blessing speak for us...

  • where do I vote please?

  • I thought she was talking to me, but apparently according to the close-up shots, she's talking to someone behind me.

  • Davos, you have my vote & full support. This has to stop now! cb

  • Wow, that's disturbing. I voted.

  • I think maybe she should disable the comments....

  • I'm supporting Julia and it also pleases me to see the good work that Shawn has done. I congratulate both of them.

I don't think these comments should be disabled. Why? Because they reveal the mentality that got us into this mess in the first place: people trying to make themselves feel better by putting other people down. End result: you look bad and the rest of us feel sad. Lose / lose.

Wouldn't it be nice if a desire to respect and help other people was something we all had in common?

  • @themightychickens so why so angry, themightychickens?

  • @bongopigbo Do you have some special gift where you can notice anger through a written text?

    Impressive.

  • @themightychickens yes and no, as in I don't think it requires a special gift ;-)

  • @bongopigbo Let me put it this way:

I'm not angry, I'm making a point loud enough so you're capable of understanding it. You apparently didn't comprehend my comments prior to the capitalisation.

  • @themightychickens So let's get this clear: someone giving you feedback about how angry and disrespectful your posts come across = them not comprehending you. Solution? You need to shout louder to make them agree with you..

Like I said, maybe that's what's wrong with the world today?

  • @bongopigbo Anyway, I'm outta here. Good luck with your campaign, Julia :-)

  • @bongopigbo Why do you keep twisting my comments and interpret it the way you want to interpret it?

I'm not angry, I might piss you off for the sole reason that I don't give a damn about you, and I capitalise some sentences so I don't have bloody repeat myself. Capish?

  • @themightychickens

I understand ur points, and also support Shawn's efforts greatly, but in terms of issues this one to me seems like it could gain much more from the regulation that is possible to be made in Davos. The fact of the matter is that what he is doing works so well because it is just him, not government funded or run by political legislation. While government funding and/or political legislation is exactly what this cause needs.

  • @ElusiveLovely Are you suggesting I'm not in favor of more funding towards anti-poverty projects? I may not be asking to go to Davos for a check to me, but I would definitely be in favor of anti-poverty orgs, agencies, and charities getting more funding.

  • @UnculturedProject No, I wasn't suggesting that at all. I just think what makes you're work so successful is that it's run on a small scale. And perhaps I'm being cynical, but the majority of government run or funded orgs I've witnessed have not been as productive (bc of all the red tape involved) as independent orgs and people like you. But while government influence in your cause may sadly slow it down, government legislation could be exactly what this cause needs.

  • @ElusiveLovely How could a random woman that you don't know, that upload a video to YouTube simply stating how terrible it is for girls in some parts of Africa, be of better use of government funding than an individual that has proven what just small amounts of YouTube donated money can do for people in Bangladesh?

Please prove how this stranger is of better use of government funding than the UP.

  • As much as I like your cause, I'll stick with Uncultured Project, due to Shawn actually being active in the YouTube community, and actually providing proof that he's making a difference. I have no bloody clue about who you are, except that you want to go to Davos.

  • mightychickens, i don't think rubbishing the opposition is helpful at this point. It shows alot about your character, what does it matter being an active member of youtube, it's what you do in the real world that matters most i think...

  • Rubbishing the opposition?

    1) How the hell could this, in any way, be any form of opposition? I'm a neutral voter, I vote for what appeals to me the most - I frankly don't give a fuck about your opinion.

    2) How do you know this woman is not a bloody scam artist, trying to achieve media attention for a ridicules cause that we don't know of yet? Very unlikely, but there is no proof that she has any other intention, other than her own words. Blind trust also says a lot about your character.

  • (Continued)

    3) If this is the way she promotes her cause, world leaders will gun her down on sight. There's no valid argument here what so ever, just empty statements. No reliable source to any of her work actually doing a bloody difference, no source stating she has actually done anything at all, except make a fancy video.

That's why actually shoving proof of previous work is important - This is just empty words.

  • (continued)

That's why none of the candidates for this year's WEF are worth anything except Shawn from the UP, who's been documenting his work for years. PROOF that he makes a difference.

  • Keep giving me thumbs down, kinda proves how intolerant some people really are.

  • I think your anger is misplaced and forgetting that we are all trying to do our bit. their is no pecking order when it comes to voting but i would suggest not opposing something which is not your passion. it's simply that and we all be treating each other with the greatest of respect.

  • @denisetierney - My anger? Won't bother replying to an obvious troll.

  • let us say that you are not in favour of being respectful to others.

  • @denisetierney Please show me an example of me being disrespectful towards anyone.

Respect is useless anyways, You won't save millions of girls with fucking respect.

  • I felt sad when i read you replies. Be disrepectful can involve trying to block others from playing their part and doing what feels right for them. Then how do you save them? What can people do to make a difference.? It is all starts with a single indiviual willing to stand up and say what they feel. I don't think there is anything wrong with that but having your say should not be at the expense of others.

  • @denisetierney Now you're just blabbering out bullshit instead of admitting it's a lost cause to change my mind.

  • I am merely offering you another perspective.

  • This barbarac pratice has to be stopped. the men need to be educated that women have worth and not just a price. These men are terrorists. Stop terrorism against women now

  • Congratulations Julia! This is a super presentation for the cause to end FGM. You deserve to win. All your colleagues on Women for a Change and A Safe World for Women Campaign will be supporting you.

  • Well done JLM, and good luck from here on it.

The 'voting' system on the Davos page is a joke, though. No clear instruction or logical feedback to tell you what's happening.

Hope people can make sense of it!

  • Congratulations on your selection as a Davos 2010 finalist. You are very well spoken and your cause is quite worthwhile. Best of success in the final stretch!

  • Markmywords: FGM is a horrible human rights violation, a disgistuing atrocity visited on young girls to ensure that male sexual fantasies and desire can continue unfettered. It is a repulsive practice, and I find your suggestion to promote it or make it cumpulsory literally sickening.

cleansexy: there are many other, less violent ways to reduce HIV spread. Mutilating 6 year old girls is NOT the answer.

JLMFGM thank you for posting the vid, +reminding us abt this issue
