Hi everyone. I'm currently 17 years old and looking to join a tennis college in the U.S. Please check out my tennis recruitment video on my channel if you're interested! Thank you for your time! :)
Hey dude. Just noticed that in every video where Gael Monfils comes up, you do not pronounce his name correctly. I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but I think it's better to pronounce the names of famous tennis players properly. In this case, it's Gael Monfils - the "s" at Monfil.s. is pronounced. In French, his family name literally means "my son". So, it's not "Gael Monfil", but Gael Monfils - with a pronounced "s" in the end.
hopefully this helps. ive been doing it wrong the whole time but ive only been playing tennis for 3 days so far and ive been making a fool of myself :/ hopefully i get better using this, i love tennis yet i can barely play.
I cannot begin to tell you how much these videos have improved my forehand and serve. I take lessons regularly and play about 5 times a week, but I have always struggled with both of these shots. Thank you so much.
It's astonishing how important this step is in the forehand. I was watching the Federer v Djokovic Basel final a few weeks ago and payed particular attention to their form. This step is implemented in every shot whether approach, defensive, or otherwise. Great work as usual FYB.
hi will hamilton i just wanted to know when you get ready to hit the ball how can I fix my stance so that I don't lose your balance? I'm wondering how to fix it but i just don't know how to.
I am a French speaker and it just annoys me to hear these things. Just willing Will to get better and don't insult him in any possible manner.
I know it is accepted to have a kind of accent on borrowed words, but I think in all respect for the players, you must pronounce russian names like a russian speaker, french names like a french speaker and english name like an english speaker and so on.
ok i love you and you are better than my tennis instructor, but i have a hard time because you are left -handed-- any way you can "flip" this video around so it looks like you're right-handed? (i don't know why this effects my learning) thanks!!
why on earth does it matter which is his dominant hand? If you listen to Will he is pointing out the fundamentals it makes no difference what hand you are. Furthermore that Frank guy is right handed, so just watch him, sorry to snap but damn.
these videos are extremely helpful and well explained but there's so much to remember (if you've watched all the videos). i mean if you've got a ball coming at you I dont think you're going to be thinking about your feet positioning, etc.
hi FYB2007, I am a beginner to tennis, can you suggest a video or some tips regarding tennis routines that maximize learning and mastering of various elements- warm up, forand, backhand, serving, rallying etc. I find that while I practise, there is an indecisiveness regarding what to do next etc. Can you suggest some tips?
hey vij. i'm not aware of a video online that goes through a practice session, start to finish. i think that if you pick an area of your game that you want / need to focus on and design your practice around that, perhaps that will help you remain focused and decisive.
I like how both these guys keep their left hand on the racquet during the shoulder turn. Getting into this habit ensures that you do indeed always make the shoulders turn and not get lazy
The neutral stance is actually the traditional forehand stance. Using a closed stance is a big no no when hitting a forehand. More generally, your stance is determined by how your feet are positioned when you hit. The stance isn't defined by your hip position. We've got a video called "Forehand Stances." If you search for and watch that video it may help clear things up.
Well I guess we disagree. My belief is that the stance is determined by your feet -- how the are positioned relative to the net / baseline -- and not your hips. If you search the web / visit the Tennis Warehouse boards and ask some other coaches I think you'll find overwhelming support for my contention.
Open hips allow your upper body to rotate more freely. If you stand pigeon-toed and see how far you can rotate. Then adjust your foot opposition so your feet are "pivoted out." You'll be able to rotate much further in either direction. Your hips "open up" when you pivot out, allowing you to rotate further and facilitate your forehand mechanics.
Thank you. The video, slow motion, instructions are just awesome. And to top it you are providing it free! Great contribution to tennis game and very helpful for tennis lovers beginning to play the game like me. Great Job!
hehe :) No not a whip. The arm / racket set in a specific relationship before you hit. It stays in that same relationship through contact. Good players swing so fast that it can looks like a whip, however. Don't be fool! :)
ha he has a K factor also sweet man i just got it i upgraded from a babolat pure drive team with a 100 sq in to a 90 sq in but it dosent mattter im about a 4.5 and iim 14
thank you for your videos. As a 36-year old beginner the precise steps are helpful. I'm far from a natural tennis player and your videos have helped me break down all of the elements. Thanks!
While I agree that you don't want to think too much during a match, particularly about your technique, I don't agree that "tennis is simple... run to the ball and the shoulder turn happens, etc." IMO, you need to break the shot down into steps that can be practiced so that, through repetition, they are automatic when you're playing a match.
This is all wonderful, but if a tennis player had to think of all these things, while in competition, they would be paralyzed.
Tennis is a simple game, all the great players do not have to anaylze every thing that goes into a shot. You see ball, go in the direction the tennis ball is, the should turn happens, and all the the rest of the body from the waist down follows. Think of the upper body form the waist up as the cab of the semi-truck, and where the cab moves the trailer follows - simple!
Naturally these steps are supposed to be incorporated in a seamless/effortless fashion when mid-point. Often the movements of the pros are slowed down in order to demonstrate how a thorough application of these principles can effect enormous change in the quality of one's shots. However you would be right in expecting a beginner to be somewhat overwhelmed by the detail of these instructions.
you take every detail and break it up..work on each over and over and over in practice..when you master the swing and technique you DONT think about it during a match..it comes natural from hours of practice...I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS..THANK YOU
hmm what about linear momentum rather than rotational momentum??? i no alot of pros use this semi open stance and rotate but maybe a linear movement is more efficient, but i guess if ur going to stand on the spot and hit a ball that this is obviously going to hit harder than no rotation lol

Mr Hamilton, in al lrespect, I have to ask you to learn here how to pronounce Monfils' name correctly.
It's not Monfi, it's Monfils. The "fils" meaning "son" is pronounce Fisse. You have to count in the the last two letters.
For Gaël, it's not so bad although you tend to pronounce Gayelle. This really needs to be pronounced separetly. Two different parts:
Ga and el. Ga-el. They're not linked in anyway.
Hard to get french names sound real with english speakers, but I'm sure you can get it.
GueorguiJoukov 2 years ago
Don't get me wrong in any way.
I am a French speaker and it just annoys me to hear these things. Just willing Will to get better and don't insult him in any possible manner.

Not hard in anyway, just split his first name into Ga-el and add an "s" sound at the end of his family name. As simple as that.

that is not opening up the hips..its closing them
that is why they call a traditional forehand stance a closed position, when you turn your stance is closed
an open stance would be facing the net as in a western style clay court forehand
the weight distribution part was correct
lambro39 3 years ago
The neutral stance is actually the traditional forehand stance. Using a closed stance is a big no no when hitting a forehand. More generally, your stance is determined by how your feet are positioned when you hit. The stance isn't defined by your hip position. We've got a video called "Forehand Stances." If you search for and watch that video it may help clear things up.
FYB2007 3 years ago
your nomenclature is wrong son
facing the net = open
hip pointing to the net = closed
the hip turn starts the shot... once loaded
mechanically your video is ok, its your nomenclature than needs to be cleaned up, hope that helps
lambro39 3 years ago
Well I guess we disagree. My belief is that the stance is determined by your feet -- how the are positioned relative to the net / baseline -- and not your hips. If you search the web / visit the Tennis Warehouse boards and ask some other coaches I think you'll find overwhelming support for my contention.
FYB2007 3 years ago
we are talking about closed vs open
you are using the term "open hips up" incorrectly
open vs closed can apply to your hips and your stance and your shoulders as well
facing the net = open
hip pointing to the net = closed
toes to the net = open
ankles to the net = closed
lambro39 3 years ago
Open hips allow your upper body to rotate more freely. If you stand pigeon-toed and see how far you can rotate. Then adjust your foot opposition so your feet are "pivoted out." You'll be able to rotate much further in either direction. Your hips "open up" when you pivot out, allowing you to rotate further and facilitate your forehand mechanics.
FYB2007 3 years ago
an open stance forehand is called open because you are facing the net when you make contact, however some take a coil or prep in in a closed stance
you are calling this prep movement by the wrong term
lambro39 3 years ago
An open stance is based on your foot position. Your upper body should be facing the net on all your forehands regardless of stance.
