So sad he never got his shot in the NFL. These says he'd be a superstar. Mountaineers will always love and appreciate Major Harris. He made the state proud.
Anyone remember seeing that snippet on ESPN in 1988 where Harris threw a football -- from his knees on the 50-yard line -- through the uprights in the end zone? I can't seem to find it anywhere, but I know I saw it. Stunning.
Major Harris was before Michael Vick,Vince Young,Pat White and Cam Newton at his time and if he was playing college football today he be a top 10 NFL draft pick.
Well im a WVU fan and i live in WV and i can say there might not be another major harris but pat white was good and he also almost took us to a national championship game
The background music to this video highlight is totally awesome! I prefer West Virginia's older uniforms over the ones they wear now. Major Harris was certainly ahead of his time.
Major Harris was a 6'1" QB and at the time in the NFL you were considered way to short to play. He left after his junior season and all but sealed ANY chance he had to ever be in the NFL. Had he stayed his senior year, WVU would have most likely played once again for the national championship. Remember that they lost to Notre Dame in the title game and Harris was injured during the game.
its taken over 20 years but wvu finally has another major harris type QB in geno smith. smith was nothing but spectactlor in wvu"s improbable comeback win over marshall. if wvu can find future players like slaton, devine, renaud, geno could win a national championship before he leaves wvu. geno was absolutly Awsome and diden"t fold under preassure at marshall. his passing was flawless and that what it takes. he is going to be fun to watch.
That guy could run and throw. He could take a hit too. Pat White could take alot of punishment but you could tell it wore on him. Major was a damn tank.
It's too bad he separated his shoulder early in the Fiesta Bowl against Notre Dame. I'm not saying WVU would've won...but I don't honestly think they would've gotten rolled the way they did if Major Harris was healthy. The guy was literally 20 years ahead of his time...just nuts to watch when I was a kid.
Well, they were dominated...it was 34-13 save for a cosmetic TD at the end. Major Harris was the first college football player I followed...and I was NOT FEELIN' 1989 after that game. Like I said, it was just too bad he had to get hurt
Black Quarterbacks got no love back then. Thank God the game has progressed in the last 10 years. Tony Rice at Notre Dame, Tommy Frazier. Rodney Peete had a more superior college career than Troy Aikman but was drafted later.
no they just weren't suited as well as Aikmen for NFL style teams, notice NFL mainly goes for Pro-style passers, most scramblers coming from college are converted, like most smaller runningbacks who dominate college are usually converted to 3rd & long or return only.
A superior athlete that never got his chance to display his skills at the next level due to prejudice NFL scouts, coaches, coordinators, general managers, and owners that refused to understand his potential.
The reason he never got the chance wasn't because of prejudice. He was immature, got involved with bad people. Major Harris has nobody to blame but himself.
We're from Northern VA, gradually moving out of DC. Not a huge family, but Ive heard we were originally from Illinois. Pretty cool! If you have facebook, and are interested, my name is Jacob McNemar. Good way to research the family history a bit. Take care man!
I have commented on this video before but just wanted to leave another comment to give a big Congratulations to Major Harris for being chosen for the College Football Hall of Fame. Well Deserved!!!!!!!
Major was ahead of his time. IMO: He was the first true Dual Threat QB in college football. He never went to the NFL because he was a pioneer and the NFL wasn't ready for him.
I am Major Harris's agent. I just called WVU about getting MAJOR the QB COACH's position the other day...We just faxed his resume'...I hope he gets the job.. MAJOR was one fine athlete and could help PAT WHITE alot!!
Major was great, but especially after this year, it's clear that Pat White is the best QB has ever had. And unlike Major, he will actually come back for his senior year to lead his team to another successful season.
damn, major was tha man...he was no joke...too bad he was ahead of our time,,,cause in this day and age he is a heisman winner...this is before ant black QB...charlie ward, vince young, mike vick,,,, this is tha beginning right here,,,,wit tha MAJOR
Thanks for reminding me of what a special talent Major was. WVU has had some pretty good QB's through the years. I was there when Oliver Luck was the guy. Jeff Hostetler was great for us as well and of course, Bulger was awesome. Love Pat White and he is incredible as well, but the best QB I ever saw in the Mounties uniform was this guy...Sad we didn't get to watch him Sundays.
I was 7 years old when he did this, but remember it well. Hr ran a 50 yard touchdown on a broken play and got called back on a flag. Next play he did the same thing and ran it all the way in again. Amazing QB. I have the opportunity to go to the BCS National Championship in NO and I will wear his throwback jersey, #9 with his name on the back to the game if we get in. Mr. Excitement!
I still remember the ceremony that year though, Major fired out this quote "I can do anything, that a Heisman Trophy can do". Looked like Major and Paul Palmer had been out all night. Favorite QB from back in the day.
Tony Rice was better my ass!!! Thats horse shit...Its like saying Montana was better than Elway when Montana had all the talent in the world playing by his side. As talented as WVU was when Major was there they were still heavy underdogs
As a product of the Brad, Rasheed, Pat era these highlights make me think that Major very well could have been the best scrambling passer I've ever seen. He was just a beast at what he did.
Hell of an athlete. I believe he would have gone pro if he would have stayed his senior year. Hopefully we can see Slaton and possibly White play on Sundays in a year or two.
Exciting and great that Major Harris was. You know before him there wss a guy named RANDALL CUNNINGHAM was who a pro since 1985. I think Renaldo Turnbull was a pretty good too.
major harris was one of the greatest college qbs ever. he never got his props. i meet him a couple of times on recruiting trips to wv. i named my son after him.
He was AMAZING,I think had he come around a few years later..he would probably have had an NFL career. However,he was never really given a chance to prove what he could do on the next level. At that time, teams were looking for the classic pocket passer.
i played with major in this pro spring league called the RFL for the Ohio Cannon, trust me there is no one that can do the things that he can do, the shit ur lookin at on this video he was doin in his sleep the entire season....he was totally blackballed by the NFL. Vince,Donovan,Vick and many more should all pay hommage.
I was present at every home game during his college career, and I have yet to see McNabb or Vick do anything close to what he could do on an off-day! I can't imagine why he wasn't starting on Sundays!
I have never been compelled to leave a comment on any video here on youtube but I had to on this one. I remember watching Major Harris play when I was a kid. He has always been and always will be my favorite college player of all time. Thanks Major for all the great memories.
what I wouldnt give to hear Jack Fleming say, "Harris to Rembert! TOUCHDOWN!! WEST VIRGINIA!!!!" one more time. The maj was the man, but that was also just a great all around team, everyone always did their part.
The great Jack Fleming..ahh..Saturdays spent playing sandlot football with his voice in the background...great times. He put WVU football on the map..the entire state expects them to go undefeated every season it seems..LOL. Yeah,he was an amazing athlete for sure.
Just think if he would have stayed in school instead of opting for the NFL draft...he may have won the Heisman.....and too bad about him getting hurt early in the Championship game against ND, if not the outcome could have been quite different !!
Just saw the preview to "Perfect Effort" about De La Salle's 12 year winning streak. It looks like a pretty inspirational movie. Search for it on youtube or it's website perfecteffort (dot) com
He was Mike Vick, a decade earlier. He was just flat out ahead of his time. It's too bad there wasn't a single open-minded, intelligent team in the NFL at the time to utilize his strengths. He would easily be a Vince Young type and caliber player if he was playing in this era.
Major Harris is one of the greatest COLLEGE quarterbacks of ALL TIME!! He could run better than VICK and throw like MARINO!!! Such a RARE and AWESOME talent!! I think the injury from the N/D national championship game caused him career problems. I dont think he was ever right after that.
You all left out the first QB ever in the NCAA to pass for over 2000 yards and run for over 1000 yards in a regular season (Clemson's Woody Dantzler). I think he remains the only QB to ever do it in a regular season at the DIV 1A level. Look at his youtube video a few years back on his #2 play of the year in the NFL. He was playing kick returner. Not too bad for a former QB. He was electric and reached a peak no one in history had accomplished
Although I think Dantzler was the first to do something like that, however, that feat has been surpassed by Vince Young. He threw for over 3000, and ran for over 1000 in his last year I believe.
When Dantzler was the first, all records and stats only included the regular season (not the case with Vince Young). Woody had 11 games to accomplish 2360 yards passing and 1004 rushing. Vince had 3000 in 14 games. If you were to avg out Woody's stats for 3 more games he would have right around the same exact passing yards and a lot more rushing yards than Vince Young.
i never liked him but he was certainly ahead of his time. the NFL had no clue what to do with QBs like him in the late 80s. today he'd probably be on the cover of madden.
