i normally slice up hot dogs, but when i tought my dog "say your prayers" i used the remains and crusts of a pork roast made that day!!! i think that was the fastest he EVER learned
I have two maltese cross shitzu dogs at 10 months, i have a problem when it comes to walking though, they jump and bark at dogs to the point im scared if they attack.
I want them to easily walk past without getting arroust over the situation, we are getting them the snip on january.
Im happy with using your videos to train them when it comes to guests and new people, its just i need some help on preventing them from barking and pulling me towards bigger dogs.
Haha, my dog Tam, well I don't know if he likes or hates bread because if you give him some he goes into the garden starts digging, buries it and thats the last you see of the bread... The same goes for chew treats like meaty bones- (ya know pigs ears and stuff...) he will take them and bury them and if anyone else (dog or human) goes near that patch or him when he's eating the bone... Oooohhh he's angry :) Good video though lots of gr8 tips!!! (sorry bout the repost! mistake in 1st 1!)

I heard a lot of trainers use hotdogs as a training treats, but I also read that they are not good for dogs. So why do trainers use hotdogs and if it is ok to give in small quantity, can someone tell me how much do they mean by small quantity in a day?
@MrVbdude I would say like 1/5 or 1/6th of their daily food every once in a while- using real meat you can use much more, but one trick you can do is put hot dog pieces in a zip lock baggie with kibble- if your dog eats kibble- and leave it over night- it makes the kibble taste more interesting and makes it more soggy and easier to swallow. kind of nasty but dogs love to eat gross things
@kikopup Thanks for replying to my comment and thank you for the great tip regrading the kibble. I really appreciate your time and effort in making these helpful positive dog training videos for us, I have learned so much from you and pamelamarxsen. I'm looking forward to buy your dvds within this month. Thanks once again :D
@josski32 Well... I have seen people feed their tiny chihuahua treats the size of their dogs head almost... Tiny dogs need tiny treats. Its annoying... I must tell you. Its way easier to train a taller dog with bigger treats than fiddle around with a short dog and tiny treats- but it's like knitting- a learned skill, once you got it, you forget the awkwardness of it
@kikopup I can just imagine! That image made me laugh! Haha. (A treat the size of a chihuahua's head!) But little dogs are worth it. And like you said, once you get the hang of it, like with nearly everything, it becomes easier. Just wondering, do you knit? I was just thinking since you mentioned it...
My greyhound LOVES my bread crusts after I have cinnamon toast for breakfast in the morning! Strange, I know, but you sort of mentioned another client who experienced the same... now I feel better. :)
I was hoping you could do a more detailed video. Like how you prepare the treats and what brands of different things you use. Love your videos and expecially your dogs. They are so cute.
You know u was saying about one of your clients dogs liking bread well my dog loves cucumber but only with the skin peeled off it! I know right WTF! But thats what she likes and thats what I use for complex trick training so if it works then yh :)
Dogs are not purely carnivores. They can lots of stuff. Some of my dogs like eating bread and sometimes rice and meat. In my opinion Dogs are actually Omnivores.
oh, it's cool to see what treats you use!! it's like looking in someone else's handbag! haha! my dogs get bored so quick with treats I'm always switching, I found today that all four dogs decided they would work really hard for a dry dog food that I didn't think any of them liked!! they keep you guessing!!
@zsianz1 I loved looking in the bag too, lol! It was also good to see what sort of bag Emily uses - my treatbag is a bit of a faff to open and close.
My last dog wouldn't eat certain foods in her bowl, but would certainly work for them if I gave them to her as a treat - I guess she felt overfaced by a full bowl.
Haha! I never thought of baggies! It's tough to keep several different treats in my treat pouch at the same time and be able to get to them separately. I usually use little yogurt cups or such, but they always spill over, especially when I am working on stalls or vaults, where I am sort of upside down sometimes. The baggies are sure to do the trick! Such a simple little thing, but I think it'll really help. Thanks, Emily. PS: I love the splash screens you've added to many of your vids.
Great info, a question I answer a lot as well. Now if I could just find a universal treat that worked with all cats I would be in heaven! LOL. Love the vids!
@peaceflmeadow It's called Freeze Dried Salmon aka Kitty Crack. My cats will do absolutely anything for the stuff. Plus, it powders easily with pressure, and can be crumbled onto kibble to make it more enticing. Dogs seem to love it too, it has a fishy smell and flavor (I presume). My cats actually got into an above counter cupboard to find the packet, and ate every bit.

Thanks. Very clear and helpful. All your vids show you using food rewards to train a new behaviour, but when do you stop using food? How do you do that--by offering less valuable ones or by rewarding less frequently? I find I have to use low value treats or my Lab gets so excited about the food she offers ALL her tricks instead of the new one..
@suezn5 reward sporadically, maybe they have to sit or stay three times before they get a treat, maybe they get a really great treat for something like a sit or down. Keep them guessing. You can wean them off treats for the old hat stuff, and use good treats for new behaviors. Don't make it too routine! Hope that makes sense, Kikopup could say it better I'm sure ;)
Hi Emily, thank you for this, I find when working on grass small treats can be difficult, especially if I am throwing them to a dog working at a distance.
I cannot find decent treat bags anywhere on the net, they all seem too small. where did you get yours from?
Hi, don't thinkI have checked outward bound, these would be for clients use as well as my own, so need to think about cost too, seem to remember The Gentle leader ones were expensive. thankyou for responding will check out.
@suhaylett the closure mechanism on Premier bags is nice and sturdy, and thats the one i have gravitated to. It might be a couple extra dollars (~$11), but worth it to me. Good luck to you!

Thanks Emily, I've just spent all day yesterday breaking each of Sparky's cookies into about 25 pieces each, (for clicker training these 3 Poms that are staying here at the moment), now I think I'm ready myself for some variety of treats hahaha. I was actually thinking about asking you this question yesterday so thanks again. :)
I keep mine in ziploc bags as well. My chihuahua actually loves crunchy lettuce and zucchini. I mostly use Wellness brand soft treats and real chicken though and sometimes her dog food. It's so true that it needs to be changed up, especially with certain treats. She loved zucchini for a while, but got bored of it quickly.
@jameskopacz you can often start out with high value and graduate down, like start with cheese and switch to cheese/kibble. You can use it to mark really good behavior. If you need your dog's attention and focus, especially in a stimulating environment, high quality treats will help. My dog will work for cat kibble in the backyard, but he loses interest in it when we are on the sidewalk. Cooked shredded chicken will get his attention and focus, even at the park with strange dogs about!

i've got a Bichon puppy that will recite Shakespeare for small pieces of
pepperoni. just zap a few slices for 50 seconds in the microwave, pat them dry
and use 3 or 4 per training session. they'll crumble...and go a long way.

My dog looooooves cheese but the vets say it's not good for them
Nothing seems to be good enough for anyone these days
The vets that said this are a part of a pet store and they offered me some off the shelf dog treats
Do u think they are just trying to sell or are they genuine xxx
Help x
