Did anyone notice this guy plays descending scales a lot worse then ascending scales? He is a really good teacher, but just an OK player in my opinion. Still, love the bids. Helpful for me BC I have no formal training so learning little tidbits is certainly helpful, not just for me but for other people I have to explain my music too. Thanks again!

dave, you should listen your own videos. you sound just awful. Like some teenager beginner. you are propably the biggest joke in the history of music. go ahead and delete this message. the truth hurts doesn't it?
i think this lesson is the best for beginner, when i was a beginner i dont even where to start and how to move over the neck, with this lesson u can start to develope your improvisation
Try learning the vocal melody to the song your soloing to and solo with that at first. That is easier than learning scales and gives your licks direction. Keep Jamming.
@spidey9556 yes, basically, if you know the scale of the solo, you play any of the notes in that scale, however, after a while you'll realize that certain notes sound good with that chord, and then you'll just play those when that chord is being played, hope that helps
You can make solos from scales yes, But you want to know much about the sound of each individual string and what sounds good when put together. you don't want to dramatically change pitches all the time.
I would recommend looking up scales and chords and like I said, study the individual sounds of the strings.
The key of a progression is usually the first chord in a sequence
Most of the time you can hear if a progression is in major or minor by the sound, major is usually happy where as minor is quite depressive, but you can work it out by taking the notes and working out the formula, a flat 3rd 6th and 7th is the natural minor scale (aeolian) there are others like the dorian, with a major 6th (check modes)
thanks, altough most of this i know by now. but i do have a question. how do you know what scales/modes work over certain progressions? like how would i know when i twould be appropriate to use G aeolian or dorian for example.
Hey Whydothegoodieyoung, add in some 3rd notes to your scales, slide into different scale shapes, and hammer on and pull off after root and finishing combinations off your minor and major scales. Just use variations, and step outside of the box sometimes.
its a long drawn out learning process but eventually you get there, just like riding a bike kinda lol except it takes a little longer, on the theoretical side theres some great websites illustrating everything from cales to technique jst type in google, it was a great help to me knowing where the notes were on a guitar, e.g. you have a chord progression take the chords and find the fitting notes in a higher octave and jazz it up with some hammer ons and pull of that should help with your solo's
i really don't understand guitar..my tutor has taught me pentatonics and the mode things and i've been playing for like 2 years almost..i don't know what i need to learn to be able to make solos or songs plz help me
Hey man the best advice i could give you is not to get frustrated with yourself or playing, afterall playing is supposed to be fun right? 2 years is nothing on the likes of this guy right here he must of been playing for like 30 years. Ive been playing for about 2 years and i'm no where near this kind of level, the best thing to know is where you stand in your playing, sorta know your limits dont try shit like this if you cant play it or else you'll get frustrated, enjoy your playing man!
PRS guitars are commonly above $2000 for new models. Older ones can go for the low $1000-$2000 range, and the great PRS SE line goes for $600 brand new. You can always find one on Ebay for cheaper though, I got mine for only $300.
I'm glad you've started using your PRS in your videos. I was starting to think you'd sold it off, or something. In my opinion it's a better guitar than any Strat, but then again, I know how much you like your Strats, Dave.
For a second I thought U were Santana!!! The guitar looks similar to his, I guess yours is a PRS.

I found that by doing this, it seems to have sharpened my skills with the pentatonic major, something I haven't practiced quite near enough.

1. how do you know what key a progression is in?
2. How do you know wether it is major or minor?
3. Would the G major pent. scale work over the G-D-Em-C progression?
ISS5731 2 years ago
The key of a progression is usually the first chord in a sequence
Most of the time you can hear if a progression is in major or minor by the sound, major is usually happy where as minor is quite depressive, but you can work it out by taking the notes and working out the formula, a flat 3rd 6th and 7th is the natural minor scale (aeolian) there are others like the dorian, with a major 6th (check modes)
and yes a g major pent would work over it : )
Ksmusicguitar 2 years ago
the chords will tell you what key are you win.
you would have to study the chords harmonic field to understand better.
The root note usually tell you if its minor or major.
every minor comes from a major note.
C=AM
so you basically have two scales to use, which is the same notes.
and you can use the G major penta over those chords, or the G natural also which is G A B C D E F# G
