Very few people have truly cool undertones. Most everyone has variations of warm and cool tones. That's why you may look better in gold yet have blue veins. A good rule of thumb, everyone regardless of their undertone, looks good with some yellow in their foundation.

If you are yellow and use only yellow foundation than you will appear more flat( which is great if thats what you like) but addingpink makes you look rosier and many people love that.there are fair skinned yellow people with pink undertones.The right combo of pink and yellow made them soo bright and radiant. Its all on personal preference,thats all.Our skin is very diverse

There are people who have yellow and red undertones! One of the world's biggest makeupartist said everyone in the world can at least use 2 foundations, many people can wear 3 or more. It depends on what you are trying to bring out the most. On some days some people prefer to look more rosier so they use a pink undertone. We all know that NC is gold and NW is pink in MAC. NC is lighter than NW, NW is more reddish/pink. An NC40 and NW40.

@laurenwhit279 i think you are neutral, like me, i also look good on both silver and gold. but i have green veins. i think that its personal preference. since you can work with both you get to choose which undertone you wanna work out. like if you get a pink undertone, youll add warmth to your skin but if you go with a yellow undertone youll make your eyes pop out more. so all in all, its all up to you.

I was mostly confused because i've noticed that the foundation I use the most is more of a pink undertone than yellow, and it matches my skin perfectly and I bought another foundation that was labeled n for neutral, but it was too light and I couldn't tell if it was too light or too yellow but I think it's just too light. Either way, I found a way to make it work. I just put some bronzer on with it and it looks great. Anyway, thanks again!

@tygre25 I think they're named that way to balance out your skintone. So if you're cool-toned you should get nw. I think that's how they work, but I don't remember for sure. I figured that out while watching a video.

I did the paper test thing I can't figure it out since I have pretty dark skin ( milk chocolate). The vein test I couldn't tell because my veins were a mix of blue and green. I know for a fact I look great in gold though, but I look equally great in silver, that's why I have 2 bottles of gold and 2 bottles of silver nail polish all the time. But is it cuz I'm black?

purple is main liekly blue veins because purple is primarily consisted of red and BLUE, but greeen isn't. Hope this helps (:

I also think gold blends in to the point that it is kind of unnoticeable & I like how silver can be seen, but I can were both (gold in winter when I become pale, silver in summer when my skin naturally tans). @xTHHxAimiForevr when you can test out foundations, pick 2 that are your skintone but different undertones, so like one is your skintone but pink undertoned and the other is your skintone but yellow undertoned. swatch both on your cheek from cheekbone to jawline and if one looks ashy on you then you know that the other is your undertone. example, if the pink undertone one looks ashy on you; you're yellow undertoned OR if the yellow undertoned one looks ashy on you; you're pink undertoned. :)

People need to know that to determine your skin warm or coolness is difficult, and it will be hard to find out yourself the best thing is to just go shopping with someone try on colours see what colours suit you best and try on wigs in hair shop to see which colours suit you best instead of all this veins and fabrics business. Because at the end of the day, we are all hugely different and cannot be put into just 3 categories when it comes to this. Otherwise you gonna scratch your head.

The vein color doesn't always work for everyone. I have bluish veins, but my skin does not have any pink or red in it. It's more olive-yellow, but they look blue just because my skin is so light.

because MAC do it differently its all confusing. they say that people with yellow in their skin are cool toned because yellow/green is a cool colour, and people with pink in their skin are warm toned because pink is a warm colour

Sorry but I really know what I'm talking about. I spent much time learning these things. (I am a cool type with yellow undertoned skin. Anything orange-based will look horrible on me, while anything blue-based is perfect. Warm will accentuate my yellow undertones and my undereye circles. Cold will not make me look bronzed but will make me look fresh and healthy. You just have to be more careful with cool MU shades and not apply as generously as warm MU

Actually, you are a cold type. The silver fabric doesn't affect your skintone while the gold makes you look red. The problem is that in our society people equal warm with pretty. That's why everybody gets gold highlights and use bronzer. So wrong! Cool colors make you look much fresher (if your a cool type). Go get a pink blush and get an orangey-apricot blush. Apply one on each side of your makeup-free face & you'll see!

Also, yellow undertone doesn't equal warm and pink doesn't equal cold.

This is always a great tip, but I should mention that these are only guidelines... My veins appear both blue and green under my wrist, but my overall skintone is warm, but I look best in cooler colored clothing like blues and purples (versus browns, reds, oranges, etc which are warm), plus I look better with silver jewelry than gold. Just my two cents. Great vid though! There are always some people that have a hard time figuring it out.

It is actually very very hard to determine your skin tone. I have fair skin, blue eyes, blonde hair, but my cheeks have always been pink. Because of all that I've always been told that I'm cool toned. However, I am warm. Another test that might be helpful (I think GossMakeupArtist showed it) was comparing your face with a white sheet of paper, if there is no striking difference between your face and paper - you are cool toned.
