The Irish army Rangers needs to be augmented with Commando's and shock trooper there simply is not enough capability for unconventional warfare in the Irish defense forces.
If Ireland was invaded its current structure would be over run in hours it needs to put more emphasis on specialist units.

@tadob The Allies could have taken Ireland with about 60'000 men and about 500 Tanks and would have decimated you from the air with a few escort carriers. @Thespeakerofmanytru8 firstly, they could not have taken Ireland with 60,000 troops. Under the hague convention a neutral state cannot be invaded. Secondly, the UK wanted 3 ports back from the irish and demanded that we relinquish them. The irish government informed them they would be met with force should they try and take our ports, so the british backed down. We left the US dock in them, all they had to do was ask. My notions of grandure are based on international law.

@SuperJimmyT actually, we interned a number of both british and german pilots and spies in the Curragh camp. Carrying out our duty as a neutral unbiased state. that said, many of the allied pilots who crashed were left "escape", although many were still interned.

Our neutrality was the choice of our country. The US with all its might and ability has stayed out of a large selection of conflicts all over the world, it has turned the other way to massacres and genocide the world over and to this day, with all its courage, it still allows North Korea to exist, with nuclear weapons.

@kealyc The U.S Rangers trained the ARW. Thats how it was started in the 70's when all the top officers underwent training in the states and brought that training regimes back here. The ARW do train with the SAS, but not necessarily trained by them

@Ballyhook - I think he's talking about nowadays, not the 60s. The SAS do train the Rangers. That would explain the presence of Rangers in Afghanistan.
@Ballyhook well, delta was formed late '70s... so thats not right. But from what I understand some of the Irish Defense Forces were able to attend the US Ranger School, and those that graduated brought back their newfound skills, and thus you have the Irish RANGER wing.

@Thespeakerofmanytru8 firstly, they could not have taken Ireland with 60,000 troops. Under the hague convention a neutral state cannot be invaded. Secondly, the UK wanted 3 ports back from the irish and demanded that we relinquish them. The irish government informed them they would be met with force should they try and take our ports, so the british backed down. We left the US dock in them, all they had to do was ask. My notions of grandure are based on international law.

Im not sure if we brought the british army to its knees, while we certainly did put up one hell of a fight for which im very proud of, you gotta remember that the majority of the british army was involved in a little skirmish in europe (WW1) at the time of the 1916 rising and did not sent their main elements here.

It would be interesting to see the Canadain Forces JTF 2 Squad in that competition because when I served with a Canadian Army Reserve Regiment (The Governer General's Horse Guards) back in the 70s we had an war exercise against a squad of U.S. Marines, and we promptly kicked their ass !!!
