Nintendo did really take advantage of the chip shortage in the early 90's. But Sega had a few games that broke the $70 mark, at the time. Phantasy Star 2 was the very first game I ever remember seeing that was over 60 bucks. And only because it came with that hint guide that was as thick as a damn Tom Clancy novel.
I'll give you that one. It totally sucked at the time, but now it's pretty cool for homebrew. Also, did you know that Nintendo wanted a CD add-on, but then screwed over Sony for Phillips, giving themselves more competition with Playstation and inspiring the worst console of all time (Phillips CD-i)?

I am scarred to this day bc the games were SOOO INFERIOR to Nintendo In every aspect: horrible gameplay, horrible sound(s), horrible endings if you even get one. Just made you feel used and dirty when you finished playing. I knew it and I was a child!!!. I dislike every employee at Sega from 1991-97. They reused games and parts of games on multiple titles. You would think that after the first 4 or 5 Sega commercials focused on attacking their rivals products.. They would realize It just wasn't working for them. Then they tried attacking Sony saying that their Saturn was better than the Playstation.. This actually does make a valid point. Cross-platform games were cheaper on the Genesis. The Genesis was cheaper than the SNES, and had a much larger library. And the original Sonic games were much better than Mario World. That's why the Genesis outsold the SNES in America, despite SNES classics like Chrono Trigger, Super Metroid, A Link to the Past, and Secret of Mana. But SEGA's tendency to lose money on new technology and sell things for a loss is why they went bankrupt.

@deraickripper They've aged flawlessly--no modern Sonic game comes close to the perfect control and design of Sonic 1, Sonic CD, and Sonic 3&Knuckles. SMW was a horribly dated design at the time, and more so today. The floaty physics, slippery run controls, unoriginal boss battles and level designs, primitive graphics, and lack of more than one song in the entire game was a joke compared to the endlessly replayable arcade-style scoring, perfect pacing, varied bosses, nonlinear design of Sonic.

@mario167100 Really? Genesis had a 7.67 Mhz CPU, the SNES had a 3.58 Mhz max depending on where the memory was being accessed from it could be a slow as 1.79 Mhz. That's just a technical superiority. As I had the displeasure of learning the hard way technical superiority isn't everything. I bought a Panasonic 3DO when it came out, the system was awesome, but they lacked 3rd party support, another thing Sega had over Nintendo.
@dsquaredproductions Comparing the Super NES's 65816 to the Genesis's 68000 isn't necessarily so simple. Like the Z80, the 68K could only access memory on every fourth CPU cycle, effectively 1.9 MHz. This was balanced out by doing more operations in CPU registers without having to access RAM, as well as the 16-bit data bus (Super NES's was 8).
@mario167100 Also, Nintendo lost more 3rd part support when they took their stand again blood and violence in video games. Genesis version of Mortal Kombat, bloody as hell and with fatalities; the SNES version, no blood, no fatalites. Street Fighter II, Genesis version had blood when someone got hit in the mouth, SNES version the blood was colored orange so it wouldn't resemble blood, I guess it was supposed to be vomit.
I just wanna point out to everyone, I'm not a huge gamer, so only a few franchises got my attention, I hate shooters(except Grand Theft Auto and Resident Evil), play fighting games very rarely(I only like it when I'm playing against someone and the platform bonus game), play RPG's very rarely(which I only play Paper Mario and Zelda) and hate sports and racing games

See those remotes on GameCube version2(Wii)? Sega had that on the Dreamcast for example)and because Sony payed game stores to remove Dreamcasts from shelves Sega went bankrupt and was bought by Sammy and produces only software and arcades(they are making more money than ever)
@LCardoso17 Sony didn't force Dreamcast off the shelves. I believe that SEGA made a deal with certain distributors to sell them, so the rest of retailers/sellers, later, did not just refuse to sell it at all, but encouraged people to buy other gaming systems.
Also SEGA failed to negotiate with EA for a sports series. They lost money there. A lot of money.
@SpiralPegasus I believe that Sony made stores put out Dreamcasts(I still find of unpacked DC's)and substitute them with PS2(even today Sony offers hardware and press kit games to some stores employees). EA sports series wouldn't give that much money to Sega. Sega went out because of Sony and because they were always launching thing off time. They always did things to early or too late, and that was their problem. People weren't ready for future.Most of Sega America are working in Microsoft Xbox
@LCardoso17 Sports games are like FPSes. They might be worthless, but they move a lot of money. They always have.
SEGA had little to blame but themselves, really. The Saturn could've kicked PS1's ass, and the Dreamcast could've kicked the PS2. But the guys at Sega America never managed to get to agree with the japanese. They fought, made stupid decisions (32X), wasted money.
Sony and Ninty were quite big rivals, though. I wish SEGA would make at least one more console. Even if it's a handheld.
@SpiralPegasus The case with the 32X and the Saturn (where SEGA started losing money) are the cases of bad timing launching.
Those little problems between Sega America and Sega Japan were the main causes why Dreamcast was so good. I still have hope in a new console (or some talk with Microsoft, since that what they were doing after Dreamcast) but a really "Sega emblem" console it's hard since they are doing more money now.

Microsoft is horrid in terms of hardware (RRoD, broken disc trays, overheating). Nevertheless, if I'm a fanboy of anything (and believe me, I never am), that something is SEGA. I'd take a console developed by both.
But yes, it's quite unlikely after having their balances on the red zone for 4 years, that they'd go back to hardware developing again.

They're still making hardware, but for the arcades (for example, the dreamcast was a arcade turned into a home console). What I think is probable is a partnership.

I just got a best sega games collection for PS3 and it's obvious why they went under. The only games i found i liked were the sonics and maybe two others. The rest seemed like lame versions of other games. (Columns on genesis/ tetris) But they did have some classis like battletoads double dragon

You know why Super Nintendo games were $10 more than the same games on the Genesis? Because they were BETTER, that's why (Mortal Kombat I and Pit Fighter notwithstanding). The Super Nintendo versions usually had better graphics and better sound.

I prefer the SNES, but having grown up with both, I also have fond memories of the Genesis. In the end, regardless of which one a person prefers, there was (and still is...) a war because both of them were really good. And every Nintendo fan owes Sega a debt of gratitude for pushing Nintendo to fight for the era instead of just resting on their laurels. 16-bit > all

I probably could list much more great Genesis games if I played more of them, sadly I don't have the collection, or the system itself, just played Genesis games on Sonic Mega Collection, and downloaded some for Nintendo's Virtual Console.

@rockinjoker07 Sega America is now Miscrosoft Xbox, and Sega went out because they were always releasing their consoles and technologies too early (MS had the modern 3D, for example. See those remotes on GameCube version2(Wii)? Sega had that on the Dreamcast for example)and because Sony payed game stores to remove Dreamcasts from shelves Sega went bankrupt and was bought by Sammy and produces only software and arcades(they are making more money than ever)

@LCardoso17 Sony didn't force Dreamcast off the shelves. I believe that SEGA made a deal with certain distributors to sell them, so the rest of retailers/sellers, later, did not just refuse to sell it at all, but encouraged people to buy other gaming systems.
Also SEGA failed to negotiate with EA for a sports series. They lost money there. A lot of money.
Lastly Sega america = Xbox? WTF?

@SpiralPegasus I believe that Sony made stores put out Dreamcasts(I still find of unpacked DC's)and substitute them with PS2(even today Sony offers hardware and press kit games to some stores employees). EA sports series wouldn't give that much money to Sega. Sega went out because of Sony and because they were always launching thing off time. They always did things to early or too late, and that was their problem. People weren't ready for future.Most of Sega America are working in Microsoft Xbox

@LCardoso17 Sports games are like FPSes. They might be worthless, but they move a lot of money. They always have.
SEGA had little to blame but themselves, really. The Saturn could've kicked PS1's ass, and the Dreamcast could've kicked the PS2. But the guys at Sega America never managed to get to agree with the japanese. They fought, made stupid decisions (32X), wasted money.
Sony and Ninty were quite big rivals, though. I wish SEGA would make at least one more console. Even if it's a handheld.

@SpiralPegasus The case with the 32X and the Saturn (where SEGA started losing money) are the cases of bad timing launching.
Those little problems between Sega America and Sega Japan were the main causes why Dreamcast was so good. I still have hope in a new console (or some talk with Microsoft, since that what they were doing after Dreamcast) but a really "Sega emblem" console it's hard since they are doing more money now.

Microsoft is horrid in terms of hardware (RRoD, broken disc trays, overheating). Nevertheless, if I'm a fanboy of anything (and believe me, I never am), that something is SEGA. I'd take a console developed by both.
But yes, it's quite unlikely after having their balances on the red zone for 4 years, that they'd go back to hardware developing again.

@SpiralPegasus (btw I've already used xbox in a store during a party with lots of people from morning 'till 2am alongside with a ps3 who was out in 34 minutes) Yes I know that people have lots of complain about xbox (I receive lots of "broken" xbox to fix) but when you see how it is made you see that it's similar to Sega standards.
They're still making hardware, but for the arcades (for example, the dreamcast was a arcade turned into a home console). What I think is probable is a partnership.

(BTW, I think that the absolute best possible partnership would be with Nintendo. Just imagine it.
The Wii might have not been the best console this gen, but during the last years Sega has worked with or for Nintendo in a lot of games. Who would know better than two companies dedicated solely to videogames?)

@SpiralPegasus Sega teams always wanted more avant-garde ideas and technology and Nintendo are more about remaking (remake the 3D and the movement sensor controllers from Sega.The only thing I remember about Nintendo "propulsing" was the graphic card inside a game). It would be good to see the two biggest companies from the 90's joined after all rivalry, but Sega tried negotiations with the Xbox 1 and now I saw some partnership in games lately (having a exclusive point for Sega in Live f.e.)

I just got a best sega games collection for PS3 and it's obvious why they went under. The only games i found i liked were the sonics and maybe two others. The rest seemed like lame versions of other games. (Columns on genesis/ tetris) But they did have some classis like battletoads double dragon

You know why Super Nintendo games were $10 more than the same games on the Genesis? Because they were BETTER, that's why (Mortal Kombat I and Pit Fighter notwithstanding). The Super Nintendo versions usually had better graphics and better sound.

@Obviously It's the war that never ends. Lots of bitter Sega fans running around and lots of dismissive Nintendo fans. I prefer the SNES, but having grown up with both, I also have fond memories of the Genesis. In the end, regardless of which one a person prefers, there was (and still is...) a war because both of them were really good. And every Nintendo fan owes Sega a debt of gratitude for pushing Nintendo to fight for the era instead of just resting on their laurels. 16-bit > all
