How inappropriate and even insulting it was to listen to a wonderful genius and well-spoken man like Isaac Asimov and then to look down and see the subtitles filled with misspellings and just downright illiteracy. So I managed to focus on the man speaking and not the subtitles corrupting his speech. Long live the mind and the person that was Isaac Asimov.
It's the year 2011 and people are still having to work in the so-called "insulting " jobs; construction ( I worked here too ),janitors, dishwashers (that's what I did for several months ). I wish I had a robotic helper. But, I didn't! None of the big corporations like the Hotel chains, fast food restaurants invest in these kinds of things or even care about the working conditions too much of their employees.
Asimov was a visionary. Computers/internet extend our cerebral cortex, enhance interpersonal dialogue & speed up flow of knowledge. It's a shame that he couldn't have lived longer to experience more of what he anticipated.
How nice to hear Isaac Asimov's wonderful point on the flaws of building cities without the automobile in mind before its invention has led to various problems when they are finally invented. This sums up science fiction or in a way a sense of futurism. How many people think like this? It's an eye opener.
@ajittffcure after i heard him say that statement, i i thought about it for a few seconds.. then straight away started searching for comments relating that. you were the 1 comment i saw.. WOW its so true.. Why are there always road works. (non-maintence) why are there always makeing new roads... in cities.. Its so true .. Humans wernt ment to have cars and such in cities..
Isak would be very disappointed after visiting Facebook and seeing that those little chips, computers are making robot civilization that plays stupid games like Farmville and that 90% of all people are using computers for totally retarded things. Maybe the best point is in "Pets", song by Porno For Pyros. Human brain loves to be lazy. Or, maybe movie "Idiocracy".
Isaac Asimov should be remembered for two reasons: Firstly, for being one of the most brilliant minds of our era....and secondly for having amazing sideburns
I need a native speaker to pay attention to 2:45...there's a word I can't get " that don't look" [the word I don't understand] "like human beings" Thanks!
Look at their country of origin-Spain.That would indicate they are not a native English speaker.Or perhaps they found this wonderful clip and decided to share it. We can still hear his wonderful words even if the text is misspelled. Don't be such a nitpicking snob, candellabarawn.
I like him because he makes my brain see farther and deeper!!!! and boil in rightful and correct imagination. Sadly todays generation doesnt have outstanding persons like him to give their imagination direction, but just stupid dumb computer games and stupid dumb Animated cartoons and movies. I feel sad for todays generation!! we should do something for the future generations. He forgot to point that out...uuu but he did!!!!! damn he was sharp! He is one of my few idols too...
Issac Asimov is, has been, and always will be my favorite and most respected author, and I thank you for putting him here. If you insist on subtitling his speech, however, then please turn up your hearing aid!!! Subtitles at their best are a major distraction, and when they don't match the vocals they tend to be damned annoying. It's insulting to a member of MENSA to have his conversation this way.
Ya i'd have to agree with you on that Asimov could help alot of people not just for vocabulary but intelligence as well as teaching ones self to learn
Freedom means possibility to act according to our nature.
Slavery in the hands of highly developed technologized systems ought to mean a way of life optimized toward greatest work efficiency, in other words toward best functioning (in one thing and thus), toward full health of everything i.e. natural healthy ways of living i.e. freedom. This is so because our needs and our natural goals in life safeguard survival which is best reached by full health
I never met him, but I read his books and stories throughout my youth from the 1970's onward. His notorious kindness and good humor came through in everything he wrote.
There are a few people in this world whose passing has effected me greatly. One of those people is Isaac Asimov. Rest in peace Isaac. I know, as you did, that there is no afterlife, but for people like you, I surely wish there was a good one.
thats really nice what u have written for him ...... i am big fan of Issac too....its sad that i could never meet him....hope there is an afterlife ...just to meet him......i have a lot of questions for him....
It was probably automatically transcribed and captioned. You'll notice all the mistakes correspond with how he pronounces the word, e.g. "Automoviles" and "gard".
Yeah, human beens, you see, they are like tiny little seeds.. once you put them into the ground and throw water, a human being is born, how do you think you came into this world? you should read more...
My guess is that the subtitles were put in for the benefit of those for whom English is second language, by someone for whom this is also the case. At least, one hopes that whomever subbed this was not a native English speaker.
I have actually known quite alot of rabbis. My grandfather happens to be one, and so is my great uncle. They are both wise men and they are both firm believers in their faith
I absolutely adore his optimism. He saw computers as a chance to save us from monotonous though and leave us to creative thought. It's a bit sad that it's mostly just leaving us to idle thought...

@akaneptune To me it sounds like Asimov is saying immobile. So I would say it is just a typo by whoever transcribed it.
