  • Julian Cope was a bit of a twat when compared to his contemporaries like Pete Wylie and Echo and the Bunnymen, Then he found Acid, as a result one or two good songs on the 20 Mothers album. Then I saw him on the 20 Mothers tour in Shepherds Bush and I realised he is a twat (a pompous one) after all. Try Try Try is still a good song though.

  • obviously you're a star julian so just fucking man up and apologise to that drunk woman in the audience you slagged off so disgracefully and we'll say no more about it

  • I remember seeing him performing this on Top Of The Pops, I'm certain he had the traffic cone hat on! I was about 13... I went out and bought the cassette single (remember them!) straight away with whatever money I had. Basically, it's a very, very good pop song in a world where pop songs are diabolical junk. Has ANYONE got the 'Try Try Try' Top Of The Pops clip?!?! I can't find it anywhere

  • @zararity Haven't seen any TOTP clips of Julian apart from the "I Gotta Walk" one. I am not sure whether the Try Try Try TOTP recroding even exists

  • @JerzuRF "In the mid-1990s, Cope signed with Rick Rubin's Def American label, releasing Autogeddon (1994) and 20 Mothers (1995), spawning the single "Try, Try, Try", accompanied by two Top of the Pops performances." From the ever valuable Wikipedia ;)

Absolutely certainly exists, why or how it's not made it to the big bad world of YouTube is kinda beyond me...

  • @JerzuRF I'll never forget that one! In his potato sack! With Thighpaulsandra. The guy's one of the last of the great eccentrics! The popular world is terribly drab now. All the world's leaders are wanking off under giant owls and 'mock' sacrifices and the rest of us are watching X Factor.

  • Fuck's sake Jasussake!!

  • As pop music is a crap genre that has been abused and still is, its refreshing to see something creative and addictive. Great song.

  • he must be singing about anthony kiedis. looks like an old chili pepper video

  • Great song !!!!

  • Dear anyone who finds themselves here with no knowledge of Julian Cope: Get Jehovahkill the album, go on holiday, and play only that album. You will never regret it.

  • @Spankabuttux Oh, yes. Jehovahkill is highly recommended!

  • Nice to see someone get better looking with age...

  • One of my favourite JC songs. Lots of melodic sidesteps.

  • Is that really Julian Cope?? He looks like Iggy Pop in this video

  • I love Thighpaulsandra who looks thoroughly out of place in this video. He looks like he just wandered in from a Death In June video.

  • Read his autobiography Head On, he was forced to release all sorts, he subverted it (the video) with his Neu! shirt, good on him I say.

  • Give it some volume

  • i amin position of that hat hahaha my dad used to play drums go on rooster

  • omg if u seen his cock....would knock u down..........lol

  • The Volume when I try to this up don't worh......

  • the decoration on the background of the stage is from the Cosmic Couriers "Galactic Supermarket" album..It was one of the weirdest krautrock groups.. I think he got his attitude in music definitily from krautrock:)

  • i can't get over julian slagging off that drunk woman at his concert (though i try try try)

  • One of the best Pop songs from th last 20 years .. simple as!

  • My favorite Julian Cope song! Thanks for posting!

  • was looking for the smashing pumpkins song try, try, try but found this, glad i did too! what a nice, fun pop song :P

  • Further proof that Copey knows how to make great pop songs!!!

  • He likes 'Neu'? the German progrock acoustic band?

  • Since when Neu! is progrock acoustic band? But yeah. They are definitely Germans

  • neu!, purveyors of the 'motorik' sound, is futuristic rock'n'roll, with no acoustics whatsoever, just krautrock at its rawest and most exciting. absolutely nothing to do with progrock shite, if by that you mean el&p, yes, genesis, gentle giant, etc..

  • @alannigelmarshall Julian knows his shit, google: "Julian Cope Krautrock sampler" its an in depth list of the fifty best german psych bands popularly referred to as Kraut Rock

  • Searched for this song for YEARS...finally found it. now i can rest

  • I wish he'd play in Thurso again. They treated him badly last time but there's loads of us here that would love him to come back.

  • BRILLIANCE!!!!!

  • The Cat called. He wants his Hat back.

  • or is it a Big Star tribute ?

  • almost sounds like a small faces tribute

  • jclock66...are you Julian's milkman? lol

  • Not milkman no Heathen but you are close.

  • Great song.

I deliver to Julian's house in Wiltshire sometimes.

He hasn't got a letterbox so I have to beep my horn and he or his wife comes out and meets me to get it.

He seems like a really nice bloke and his wife is a defenite MILF.

  • Hee hee!!

Hope he don't read this blog or his missus might come out an lamp yer after writing that.

  • @jclock66 deliver what?

  • Looking forward to seeing Julian in liverpool on 12th September with the another mighty figure from the Scouse indie scene Pete Burns!

    Should be quite a night!

  • Pete Burns is CLASS!

  • .......arse!

  • Huh???? Whatever.

  • Head Hang Low---is cope at his best.....

  • It's a very strong song with production by Ed Stasium, who also produced "World Shut Your Mouth". It's frustrating being a Cope fan. On the one hand we wish him success, on the other, we like keeping him to ourselves. So when he tries to go mainstream, like on this single, he still presents an image that will alienate 99 per cent of a pop audience and we have to say "yeah, he looks a dick but he's great".

If it were by Oasis or Dodgy or Supergrass it would have been MASSIVE.

  • I totaly agree mate, there something about not wanting him to get too popular, but I'm sure even if he treid he would get sidetracked or say something so cosmic the greed head tv producers would freak. Personaly i dont think he looks like a dick, the arseholes i see with there Casual Clothes, or there jeans hanging way down under there arse like there 5 sizes to big look like dicks.

    Down With The Greedheads

    'Give the poet some'

  • Yeah, I think Julian is a supreme lyricist/songwriter.

  • 20 Mothers is a sublime album. This track needs to be appreciated through the CD/LP

  • BEWARE THE NEW WORLD ORDER

  • Bom Bom Bom Bom Bom..ba ba bom... classic Cope..love it you fools...!

  • this was the song that got me into him - 18 years old and my friends are besoted with oasis - fuck them!

  • Wow! Arent you so cool. Swapping a bunch of dullards for one dullard. how alternative. its shit

  • Yup. but it did mean swopping stella for weed and now I'm 30 and all me mates are the size of a cow (ref) and I'm lithe its STILL worth doing...

  • Good for you georeff. fair play.

  • @ jasussake

the prob is: half of your list sucks. seldomly heard such boring twits like poor pink floydish "Air", the disco-freaques of "Daft Punk" or valium-driven "Stereolab". I'd rather listen to an endless-loop of Julian Cope-songs than to flat out lounge-electro.

but not for nothing: Cope never will reach the genius of NEU!, that's for sure.

  • Cope is one of the greatest musician of the '80 and '90. He did his own good music when others where playing crappy britpop etc. Julian Cope is The Man

  • Yes, thats as maybe my friend but for fuck sake, this track is fucking rubbish, you cant deny it. This would end up in Bryan Adam's dustbin. right at the bottom.

  • Well, I CAN deny it because it's fabulous. Who made something as great as this in the same time? I mean second half of '90

  • Hahah! do you have cloth ears or something?! Who made music as good as that!? the Fall, Stereolab, Tortoise, Cornershop, Arab Strap, Daft Punk, Air, Bjork, DJ shadow, orbital, The list is bloody endless..

  • Are you suggesting that corner shop are good, get fucked

  • Toadums, if you had followed the thread properly you would have gathered that we are talking about the mid-90s and to suggest that 'Brimful of Asha' by cornershop was not an original and uniquqe record is to delude yourself. ditto the rest of the list..all individual sounding music from creative artists. Yes, Cope has made some good music especially with the teardrops but try, try etc is complete horseshit for fucks sake. Wake up and shake the shit from out your ears

  • No No No

  • This sounds nothing like Bryan Adams, you are reaching a bit.

What it is, is a great pop song, nothing more nothing less and I'm sure that was his intention.

    No pretensions.

  • Turquoisetandem: another one who cant read. What I said is that the track is so dull that even Adams wouldnt use it, not that it sounds like him. And yes, its still a shit track from a talaentless cunt. Mind you, hes written a good book on Krautrock, Ill give him that.

  • MUCH AGREED!!!!

  • yeah it is thighpaulsandra...............nice shroom hat archdruid......saw him at burnley mechanics..........he had a flourescent yellow and orange white and black dress on.........was almost................no it was out of this world..........i felt like i was on another plain............consciously............was very trippy............or maybe that was the soft blac i was quoffing...........big up julian and coil

  • try try try a little bit more more more

  • Cosmic Jokers studio-deko, NEU!-shirt, Yoko Ono... must have been heavy on his kraut-trip!

    btw. brilliant song, Rundgren-Liga.

  • European MTV2 must be better. Much better.

  • Julian is always BRILLIANT, a genius. Hats off.

  • He is one amazing dude. Thank you for posting this. I praise you!

  • love the neu top. craut rock all the way..

  • ***BEAUTIFUL WISE HUMAN BEING***
