  • Auger zingt het zonder inspanning zo lijkt het. Wonderschoon. Ze doet recht aan Mozart!

  • This comes from another world. Thank you so much, Arleen Auger and Leonard Bernstein for this extraordinary gift!

  • The two naysayers are byond help. They are lost souls......

  • Excellent ,bravo !

  • the most beautiful rendition of this aria

  • I was very priviliged to sing in the choir very often with Arleen as soloist, mainly in the Bach passionen. It has been the most thrilling moments in my life!

    I will never forget her!

  • Much of this performance almost defies belief.

  • So beautiful!!! She looks very calmed and sings with a such facility, awesome.

  • OMG this is amazing! her voice is VELVETY!

  • maravilhoso!!

  • I'm literally crying as I listen to this. Absolute perfection.

  • @tekalynn ..so am I, she was divine and here she penetrates to the core of this sublime piece like no other...and who can forget her "I know that my redeemer liveth" in Handel MESSIAH with the excellent English Concert & Trevor Pinnock.... "the good die young..." sd goh (malaysia)

  • 4:30 - 5:00 is just remarkable.

Gorgeous wind playing aswell, beautiful compliment to her voice.

  • Apart from just about the most beautiful soprano voice this world has heard, can't help noticing the absence of affectation, strange facial contortions, as though she is simply speaking to us, just as natural, while producing those incredible vocal gymnastics. I don't know if it means anything at all, but have noticed the same thing in one I'd consider her male equivalent, tenor Jussi Björling.

  • Ah, lovely Arleen, you died so much too early, and now we must live on without you and your angel's voice..

I think someone was jealous and wanted you for himself..

  • Just beautiful! :-)

  • this is how catholics sing...but still...i have the fellling that this was composed for romanians for we feel it so deep inside...

  • I would have been curious to listen to Kostanze Mozart singing it... if I am not wrong this mass was written by Mozart to be performed in Salzburg to convince his father to let him marry Kostanze... and Kostanze was also involved in the performance as soprano solo

  • This is sublime!

The best version of this by far in my opinion...

Her breath control is incredibly seamless...her voice is clean as a whistle...just shows her impeccable technique over the years......nothing forced or no wierd face pulling ...just perfect...how lucky are we to be able to learn from this beautiful Lady!!!

  • @jenson7720 Oui, c'est divin, il n'y a rien de plus beau que ce chant!

  • @FrenchNiceVoice Oui,...I like your name haha Frenchnicevoice!!!Tres Bien!

  • Holy cow this woman has impressive breath controll...

  • um, ah, it's just beautiful.

  • Sadly, those who aren't traditional Catholics can never fully appreciate this.

  • @Jitpring What a nonsense!

  • @sparklingMedea Alas, it's not "a nonsense," but is in fact true. Become a traditional Catholic and you'll understand.

  • @Jitpring Who told you I'm not? Beeing a Roman Catholic doesn't allow me to call ignorant a lutheran or a muslim, or even an Atheist, for God's sake! Mozart was all but a pious man, so what inspired him to write such mystical lines? The soloist in the present extract is Mrs Augier, and American, maybe a Protestant, a Methodist or whatever, and she sings it just as beautifully as the piece is written. Do you think a Catholic would have done a better job? I'll give you an advice, as a repl

  • @sparklingMedea as reply to yours: don't put yourself above anyone. Humility is Christian and beautiful.

  • @sparklingMedea Totally agree with you-she does indeed sing this beautifully!

  • @sparklingMedea First, being a real Catholic does indeed require that you see heathens and heretics as either more or less ignorant. Second, Mozart was indeed pious, as anyone who has read his letters knows, or who has really listened to his music.

At any rate, it's obvious that you embrace cafeteria Catholicism; that is, you're a Catholic-lite. Watered down. Very common among Novus Ordo NewChurchers, of course.

And I said nothing about singing, but appreciation and understanding.

  • @Jitpring Please don't even dare to tell who I am without knowing me. May God give peace to your heart, whatever your yearning for.

  • @sparklingMedea But I already dared to do so. It's clear from what you've said that if you're a Catholic at all, you're of the Novus Ordo watered-down Catholic-lite variety. Am I wrong?

  • @Jitpring You're as wrong as one can be.

Now let's listen to this wonderful singer and this uplifting music. Best wishes to you.

  • @sparklingMedea Yes, let's do so! But I repeat: One who isn't a traditional Catholic can never fully appreciate or understand such music. This doesn't mean that he doesn't have some appreciation or understand of it, even a lot, but that he will never fully.

  • @Jitpring As for being "catholic", it NEVER did anything but give me a WRONG view of God & NO knowledge of His Truth. Catholicism is full of UNbiblical practices. It DOESN'T preach the gospel as it is. Please open your Bible & read it yourself-"And the Truth will set you free."(John 8:32) As for this music, you DON'T have to be catholic to appreciate this. This is adoration, glory & praise given to God. It's not restricted to a religion-it can be understood and enjoyed by anyone. God bless you.

  • @AriaDivina You're conformed to the world. Satan wins so many souls. It's infinitely sad to see that, with you, he's won yet another. If you had known genuine Catholicism, you would have stood a better chance of resisting him. Still, I advise you to start praying the prayer of the Gospels every day; that is, I advise you to start praying the Rosary every day. Do so. The situation is urgent.

  • @Jitpring RE:rosary, it is written: "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."(Mat. 6:7) RE: being conformed.I KNOW the Risen Christ. RE:the devil, it is written:"Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.(Eph.6:10-11)I do. Ponder this: "In reply Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.’” (John 3:3) Peace.

  • @AriaDivina Quite right on all counts. First, the key word is "vain." it can never be in vain to pray the Gospels. The Rosary is nothing less than this, the prayer of the Gospels. To reject the Rosary is thus to reject the Gospels.

And of course we must be born again, as Christ and His Catholic Church have always taught.

  • @Jitpring RE:I repeat Jesus' teaching: "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen [do]: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."(Mat. 6:7) It's not rejecting the Gospels, it IS following His command to not engage in vain repetition which that is. In the Bible the LORD GOD never mentions OR commands us to pray it. So, it's NOT of God, but man. The rosary has prayers to Mary-a thing forbidden by God, "Thou shalt have NO other gods before Me"(Exodus 20:3).

  • @Jitpring continued...She was only the mother of the Lord Jesus, a vessel God used to execute His plan of redemption. She was like us, human, no more, no less, though she was an obedient servant of God. She is NOT to be venerated, prayed to or given any of the worship due ONLY to God. If you are born again, which btw, I'm not questioning, but... were I you, I'd SERIOUSLY question those practices, which are of MAN. They are clearly not of GOD. Peace and I wish you God's blessing. Good bye.

  • @AriaDivina I can see that to continue would be an exercise in futility. Goodbye.

"When with much entreaty we cannot persuade him to attend, it remains for us to be silent. For if we are still to go on, his carelessness is aggravated. But him that is striving to learn, we lead on, and pour in much."

-St. John Chrysostom, Commentary on Mt. 13:10, Homily XLV

  • @Jitpring I think the singer, the conductor and orchestra, having made such a beautiful performance of the Grosse Messe, did understand it... But i don't think they all were traditional Catholics.

  • she knew how to sing and maintenance her breath.. you really a diva

  • tenang banget nyanyinya and she knew how to sing and maintenance her breath.. you really a diva

  • Merveilleuse interprétation, maeztte superbe, oui bravissimo Madame.

  • The best "Incarnatus est" I ever heard. This is very first class!!! Its so sad, that Arleen Auger already so long is passing away. Such a voice never is on Earth.

  • Great Voice!

  • This lady is extrodinary. Her melody sublime and She didn't seem to need to take a breath!!!

  • Transcendent

  • Holy cow.

  • Querida Arleen...

    e Bernstein...

  • @bettalapi No, attraverso Arleen Auger e MOZART. (Bernstein was not the genious, only the conductor. But I agree he does a magnificent job of conducting though. And her voice, wow... : )

  • Schitterende uitvoering, perfecte adembeheersing. Wat een rust straalt zij uit!

    Marian van Schaaik

  • Sublime.

  • mi manchi!

  • il paradiso

  • one that can attain perfection will be immortal: Arleen Auger!!!!!

  • The bassoonist is INCREDIBLY sensitive, like around :43 in the introduction.

  • Arleen Auger; what a singer, what a voice, what a lovely personality she was. Her love shines through in her singing.

Thank you so much, dear Arleen.

  • @Uruguruh Auger was exquisite. This is especially apparent after just listening/watching to one of today's vulgarians sing this piece; that is, Natalie Dessay.

  • thank you for share this !!!

  • Perfection

  • Oooh sooo beautiful!!!!

    Augeer, so much loved.

    Bless her!

  • Yes Chris, this is amazing.

  • I've hear many.

But none so Angelic as Arleen.

She was truely special, and one of a kind!

  • Yes, yes. My teacher Gerd had some lessons with her too. What an honour....

  • really!! That's so exciting

  • marvellous!!!

  • Best version of this on YT--luminous and serene, transcending any need for theatrics or dramatic flourishes.

  • so true. And amazingly flowing and musical. Who today would be able to construct such a mature, thought-out and careful interpatation?

  • vibra il cuore voce perfetta

  • When was this? Bernstein died in oct '90, guess it was short before. Brilliant Arleen Auger died june 1993 and I saw her on stage jan. 1991 when she looked exactly like here, so guess again this was around (early or mid) 1990? Can someone tell me? Is that Frederica von Stade beside her? Auger was magnificent

    - like always!

  • Comment removed

  • it was performed in April 1990 at Waldsassen Germany. And yes, the other singer is Frederica von Stade.. There is plenty more information to be gleaned from comments if you watch the entire series.

  • The Director reminds me of ALF!

  • Perfect voice for perfect Mozart

  • Ms Auger... May the Angels who sang through you also sing TO you!!

  • this woman is really awesome .

Arleen auger is a real singer... Not like the new divas.

She knows what she's singing , and her voice is bright and sutil .

Definitivly hear Arleen auger sing , its like being in heaven.

  • I agree. I feel so that that she left us far too early...

  • For me one of the best Mozart soprano's ever lived. Died much to young.

  • @Mondeschatten Couldn't agree with you more on everything you said.

  • mozart forever!!!!!!

  • This is very beautiful... she has a very nice voice.

Although I still prefer the version by Karajan with Janet Perry and Barbara Hendricks. This comes close, but the other one is much better.

  • Comment removed

  • 2:13-2:30 no brething...they say mozart is hard for the proffesional...who could better give the subtle emotion, and so effortlessly than auger..thank you!

  • it's unbelievable! and again between 6:42 and 6:59 no breathing!!

  • so true, my friend

  • and some people say she looked like a said person! she was sad with all the business side of the music world, but she was a happy sould, a very happy one! one a happy sould and person can sing like this!!!!!

  • up there with the Angels!!! missed so much!

  • This music and performance bypass the listener's ears, go directly through the pores and then gently cloak the heart with love and grace.

  • My God, I'm in Heaven

  • I have the cd of this recording. It is the best I know of the Great Mass in C minor. It is excellent to know that the images exist too.

  • Obra maestra.

  • The Annick Massis version comes close, but this is just perfect. She is so perfectly in control of her voice and does not overdo it. She also has such a graceful stage presence about her. Beautiful.

  • many ppl knows the Kyrie, but ALL this mass it`s just a "Mona lisa" off erudit and classsic music-STUNNING MASTERPIECE

  • An angel!

  • As a musician, I always consider it an honor and privilege to play Mozart. Music doesn't get any better than this. She is singing with the angels now.

  • I played this piece for my son in his first day at our home, after leaving hospital, 2 days after his birth. Watching that little part of me in front of my very eyes, the perfect 'incarnation' of my love for my wife, listening to Mozart, was probably one of the most powerful impressions I will have in my lifetime.

  • were can i get a dvd of this whole performance and were is it shot at beautiful cathedral

  • This is one of the greatest live performances (and surpassing 98 percent of the studio recordings) of this piece I have ever heard, and I have heard probably 30 recordings of this. She is marvelous, and Berstein's interpretation is virtually flawless. It is Mozart and His interpretation. Granted, there are maybe 2-3 times she is just barely, BARELY a hair sharp. But those instances were, I dare say, effective. Exquisite!

  • This in and aesthetic and emotional orgasmmmmm...

  • the best of all........

  • What a magnificent artiste!

  • It is like a dream!

  • but probably being distant is how it should be done ... what do you want more than Mozart?

It is like going to the Church and wanting the priet to tell what is on the bible, read yourself!!!

Auger had the GREAT ability to dittach her emotions and put her best (tehnique and concentration) to the service of music.

If this is not a great singer, well ... then it is ok as well .... as long as we can have as an option to other great singers ;-)

  • Oh c'mon. Can you really deny that this is great, first rank singing? I don't think you can without being disingenuous. One may not like Auger's sound, but it's hard to deny the perfection in almost everything she ever sang.

  • Speaking of Mozart sopranos ... you must hear SANDRINE PIAU's Mozart album ... sublime !

  • Speaking about PIAU. Have you heard his version of Rejoice! Breathtaking, isn't it?

  • heard many versions on CD but Arleen Auger is the one to beat ... this is just gorgeous ... hers is the ultimate version (1988 DECCA recording , Hogwood conducting)

  • How can she sing so lightly and perfect !

    Brava !

  • She has the voice of an angel....

  • How do you know? Did you ever hear an angel?

BTW, wonderful rendition Miss Auger. R.I.P.

  • One other thing--Mozart later reworked the Kyrie and Gloria from this Mass into his "Davidde Penitente" K. 469, for Catarina Cavelieri. Does that mean he was in love with her? Or how about the fact that the role of Susanna in "Le Nozze di Figaro" really WAS composed specifically for Nancy Storace, as well as the grand concert aria, "Ch'io mi scordi di te" K. 505, which the great Mozart historian, Alfred Einstein said was proof that Mozart was indeed in love with her.

  • And I will add that Arleen Auger was probably the best Mozart soprano ever! No one has ever sung Mozart as beautifully and cleanly as Auger. God rest her soul!

  • This is why I LOVE Mozart. This unfinished Mass proves how much he loved Constanze, his beloved wife. This also proves what a great singer she was as it was composed specifically for her voice. Even though the Mass was not finished, she sung it one time in Salzburg when they were visiting family. Mozart was simple a GENIUS!

  • Okay, I'd like to know just how this proves that Mozart loved Constanze? And no, it wasn't composed specifically for Constanze's voice. Mozart composed the Incarnatus Est for her. The rest of it was a reworking of an unfinished Mass that Mozart had stuffed into a trunk and pulled out to create this particular Mass. The Mass was written as a result of a vow Mozart made with himself in relation to his wife Constanze and his father Leopold and their strained relationship.

  • Extraordinary

    What an orchestra

    What a director

    What a singer

and what a composer, genious, sublime

  • yes, this is real artistry by a great artist. A lesson for all screamers and overpowering singers! This is the right way to sing Mozart. Thank you so much for this wonderfull moment of pure pleasure.

  • So bautiful,so devine...

  • Hey Shostakk,

Where did you get this video recording?

    Please let me know.

Do you also have any video recording where Arleen singing 'Bist du bei mir'?

  • Wow...there aren't words to describe the beauty of her singing....brava!!!!

Gracias! Marcel de Montréal, Canada

  • What sublime music sung by a heavenly voice. Thank God for Arleen Auger and the many recordings we have of her singing. I love and miss her!

  • E' una esperienza di Paradiso

  • Bella adorata! You will live in our hearts forever! There has never been so graceful and more divine soprano!

  • wow, she was and she is amazing. God bless you Arleen, we remember you.

  • wonderful...

  • Sublime - a lesson to all singers on a perfect legato. The look on Bernstein's face at the end of the aria tells everything.

  • Ach, Arleen's UNBELIEVABLE tenderness -- my heart melts and rejoices. Mr Shostakk, I've looked all over for the DVD, and find only CD's -- is this from something that's available for purchase? Thank you SO MUCH for posting this -- you've done a great service!

  • [later]: nevermind, I did find the DVD(s) on Amazon. Thank you for sharing it! Sagenhaft.

  • she makes it look so easy... her face and vioce... what grace, and elegance, and beauty. she must be an angel. i picture this kind music in heaven... that and handel's messiah.

  • heaven touched earth while this perfoming!

her voice is clearer than a diamond,

    absolutly lovely

  • MASTERPIECE OPUS MAGNUM

    Thanks for post this version

  • What a singer she was - if we only had ONE like her today the world would be a better place for music making! Arleen, rest in peace!

  • A voice from heaven .

    2 legends ....

  • This is so lovely. Thank you for posting.

(Miss Auger, you are an angel on the earth!) Merci!

  • the most beautiful example for a great artist always standing behind the masterpiece she is performing. Very touching!

  • Best version of this piece ever!!!

  • Et incarnatus est de spiritu sancto ex Maria Virgine et homo factus est ----- And He took flesh From Holly Spirit And Virgin Maria To make Himself a man ----- (Sorry for my English) 2007-0827.1441 GMT
  • When does she breath, what an incredible singer. I adore her in Bach too, where her purity brings you to Heaven.

  • what impeccable mozartean style!

  • While I worship the ground Bonney walks upon, I always felt she never quite understood Mozartean music. Auger has perfected it.

  • so easy and with no affections! perfect!

  • Incredible!

  • Manfred Clement is the best oboe player ever!!!!!

  • I still miss Auger.

She was one of the best soprano's ever!!!!!

God needed an Angel, and took Arleen to Heaven.

  • She is Arleen Auger.

  • Wonderful. Who is the soprano ? Maria Staeder?
