Couldn't this be a message from Leone maybe? It was a very distinctive and known weapon at the time (MG42/59 was an mg42 modified by italian army and almost surely in use in 1971) so i doubt that it was just a big mistake.
AS FOR ME THE BEST MUSIC OF ENNIO,, as for me one of the Best movie,no doubt about it statistic shows for othr One of many best movie of that period this movie stars James Coburn and Rod Steiger, i have seen this many many times. the same wiht Once upon a time in the West, Trinity, My name is nobody
What anachronisms? A Lewis gun and a Spandau -both available at that time. The armoured car isn't anachronistic either . Can you clarify, please? I can't see an MG-42 anywhere.
@Warriorking1963 Leone was usually pretty good with historical accuracy. No '92 Winchesters during Civil War, etc, like John Ford. So, he Had to have a symbolic reason for the WWII weapon--Nazi invasion of Italy? Rome audiences Loved some of his symbolism; they could relate to it. see the SergioLeoneWeb for big discussions.
@Warriorking1963 I doubt this is a "slip". Leone was incredibly picky and detailed to history with his facts. People complain about his characters wearing dusters...which was actually what everybody wore at the time. give it a rest.
Well, I read there were suppoesed to be 2 maxims but there weren't any others available at the time, and, the ending scene where Rod Steiger holds the MG42 wasn't supposed to be in the script, he was supposed to weild 2 pistols instead.
Te Song went with it, It is A Sergio Leone masterpiece of voice, strings, and slide whistles. Like cutting the background from the Mona Lisa because you hate trees..
@MikeofWyoming Yeah, this movie was full of Real Dynamite explosions, Not just gasoline and mothball fireballs like now. You Can Tell--tendrils of smoke Shoot so fast it's like the blink of an eye--and, the bridge (over a Roman aqueduct in Spain) is Still Gone... Took 3 minutes for dust to clear. Again, Not like today';s wimpy excuses for "explosions".
Yeah, beats those gasoline and mothball "fireballs" they do now! Real Dynamite explosion--where a bridge (over an ancient Roman aqueduct in Spain) is Still gone....
I see two machineguns here:
Maxim 1910 (red army)
MG 42 (nazi germany)
Firing toghether against... capitalism?

My 2 cents..

The MG-42 makes the entire movie somewhat an anachronism

@PanzermanFuchs44 I have to agree with you. This was a really bad slip and does take something away fro the film.
Warriorking1963 1 year ago
@Warriorking1963 virtually all westerns have anachronisms, its no big deal though because at the end of the day theyre not documentaries

they should re dub this part with a better song. The scene was fantastic but the Song was awful.
