what great memories, was thirteen and just got my first radio,i remember listening to shout by lulu, my dad took my radio of me i used to listen quietly, nice comments and interesting stuff, just a great song, funnily enough i married a girl called---------------------------- pauline, lol
This song has haunted me for so many years, I saw it/heard it in a short promo film (probably shown at the same time as a Hayley Mills movie) in the local cinema when I was six years old accompanied by my mum! I always thought it was called "Julie Ann" and sung by Heinz! I must have seen a promo by them as well sometime back then. Great to hear it again.
In the 1970s he went on to present on Play Away, and also the pre-school children's programme Play School For a time he was also married to the actress, Julia Foster
@progrocer I heard a few years ago on the radio I think after the song was played, that the lead singer died a few years before. I don't know what from, probably an illness, but I don't think he was very old.
Try putting his name into Google, and see if it tells you. I think I might do that to see what he died of. Great song -I love. I heard a remake of it by them, done 'live' I think, but it didn't sound anything like the original single! I have the original in a couple of places on tape.
@Mum60 The lead singer, did not die, he is Lionel Morton and he is my father and is very much alive I can assure you, living with his fourth wife and kids. The person who died was Alan Ruck, the drummer.
@Azanti Oh, no - you're right! Wasn't thinking on the right wave length. I didn't meet mine 'til '98 actually when I looked him up when I had my third trip to UK. Live in Perth, WA now since 'May '78 - been in Australia for 44yrs now since March, '67. Great song that anyway. Always like to hear the original, but not the remake.
My cousin, Mike Deighan played off the side of the stage with them.He was a great guitarist & plays the fingerstyle solo on Blackgirl. The Late Fritz Fryer sold me the guitar he used on Juliet. My cousin formed the shortlived and ill fated Fritz, Mike and Mo after Fritz left(they split after a bad motorway crash in which Mo went through the windscreen)& has since played banjo with The Temperance Seven.I live in Lancaster, half an hour from Blackburn & once headlined at The King George's Hall

You are very welcome, sorry I added it twice - at least I can claim 'stereo thinking!' May I also add that Mike Deighan is also cousin to my brother John Waite who was the singer/bass player with The Babys, singer with Bad English and has had 3 no.1 hits in America, the best known of which is 'Missing You' a solo release in 1984 and still popular worldwide. He re-released it with Alison Kraus (his partner) last year and it was once more a hit, this time in the country charts
thanks again glamrock its nice getting this sort of feedback as all i am doing is sharing music from my collection which have stayed well in my memory with others who may not have heard them , unfortunately the copyright people don,t always see it that way having had a few blocked , thanks again trichoone .
@glamrockerqueen1 Love this song, very well sung by the lead singer as well, his voice certainly has good pitch and depth,i am surprised i didnt hear lots about them as my home town is Blackburn,Azanti i share your pain my dear,i didnt meet my dad untill i was 31,but there you go and i did miss him like hell whilst i was growing up,i will make sure my kids never lose there dad for sure on that one.
Fabulous song_brings back happy memories of a gentler age.Lionel Morton had a voice of real quality -had been a choir boy in my home town of Blackburn.Even remember him opening his own boutique-carnaby street style!Believe they had a number 1 hit in Turkey!?Believe Fritz Fryer passed away recently. Thanks "trichoone" for taking me to the Land of Lost Content.
Alan Ruck committed sucide some years ago. Mike Wilshire did tour as the Pennies with a different line up for some while, along with Charles Heart. I am not sure what Mike is doing now and I am trying to trace him presently.
Lionel Morton is my father, he was married three times and has numerous children, he currently lives in Cornwall with his four children. Lionel wrote the famous theme tune to Playaway, on which he was also a presenter. He also presented Play School and appeared in several shows in the West End.
i dont know if you was serious about lionel being your Father or not but thanks for the infomation it was very interesting and i remember him doing play school etc , its great when you receive comments of this sort bringing things up to date thanks again-trichoone .

@Azanti What do you mean you didn't meet 'til 1997? You said above that he is your Father.
Mum60 9 months ago
