yall criticizing what seems to be a band camp video from three years ago??? this show yall know nothing about hbcu bands
this is a sweet marching cadence btw.... sorry yall this clearly isn't intended as a punch, but yall saying it sounds bad? come on now you only watchin the snares play flams, 9 stroke rolls and then go h.a.m. on some simple ass movements. but jackson state had some stuff with chops. nsu yes is the choppiest hbcu due to their dependency on technical shit.
this is what happens when people with about 4 brain cells go to a college that only accepts people with 4 brain cells. that shit sounds like shoes in a dryer. playing rhythms that any kid in 8th grade band could handle. watch ANY DCI drumline you can find on youtube and then feel ashamed you ever touched a fucking drum.
I focus mainly on corpstyle drumming but I do like to add some showstyle stick tricks into my playing. Even though it may be a little dirty, show style drummers definitely have more entertainment factors and groove than corps.
@KiahIsLame Well obviously I can't speak for everyone, but I've heard of DCI. WGI as well, which applies to this situation equally. What's your point? No wait, let me guess. You don't like this because it isn't the machine-like precision you're used to, and you have no soul (hah) when it comes to music. You think this is the dirtiest playing you've ever heard, and it's terrible. Well guess what? I love Ditty, Double Beat, and Blue Bucks. AND this. Now gtfo, and open your mind while you're at it.
@KiahIsLame this style of drumming has been ariund longer than DCI dude. this style of drumming has been around since the 1930's. this style actully comes from military roots and a lot of these cadences were inspired from military cadences but all this drumline and many others like this one just added dancing and tick tricks. and by the way you do realize this was for entertaining the crowd and as well this is from the 2006 season
@TenorBoy2011 this isnt dirty its just a different style. if everyone played the same way then no drumline can have its own thing. and this is one of the cleanest showstyle drumlines out there. and you are probably calling them dirty cause the way the snares are tuned.
hmmmm this sounds like crappy ass drums if this was my band i would prob not march go march with someone whos good like scv or bd damm this suck it kind of hurts to listen to this crappy quality of playing
@MAGICmack23 dude its not crappy its just different. all showstyle bands really are is just old school military bands with show to it. thats why they sound the way they sound. and just because they are different doesnt mean they arenot good. and alot of people love this band. at halftime the stadium is full just to see this band and this isnot even the current drumline this is the alumni
@MAGICmack23 its not dirty its different and the snares have kelvar instead of mylar if they had mylar it'll be better. and listen to the current drumline they are good. and so what it aint perfect they not even trying to be perfect they are only for ENTERTAIMENT not being perfect cause its boring being perfect all the time
@MAGICmack23 not for showstyle cause all they do is entertain but they try at least to make it sound decent since the crowds they play for dont know what a drumline is suppose to sound like

@seetherfan1369 cant you see this is for the fans. when yu play for non musicians this is what they want to see and this is a style that has been around since the 30's which is way before DCI came around
@centraldrummer lol, first of all I never said this is complex, they're just on the yard playing loosely for some students. I should know I graduated from JSU. Check some of the other vidz, i'm not hating on corps style, I just prefer this style over it. Some people prefer corps style, nothing wrong with that!!!
@slickkapone well i prefer corps style but ive always wanted to march a season on a line like this just for the experience... i like drum corps playing but i think doing this for a season would be a blast just cuz i like to dance and add flashes in practices and such just to be goofin ha
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
sounds like a mouth full of shit to me... and what the fuck is up with all the goddamn dancing in black bands? I've never EVER understood why they have to turn it into some sort of fucking dancing contest. fuck the dancing, learn to play the goddamn instruments like they're meant to be played and leave the modern art dramatizations to the art majors!
Your right about 1 THING,,, YOU DONT UNDERSTAND!!...SO,Maybe you should consider just shutting your mouth when you dont understand oppossed to talking and appearing like an ASSHOLE.
drumlines/drumcorps actually write music and play intricate and complex rudiments and shit... these douchebags in the video are playing shit that my 8yr old niece can play. Oh, by the way, MAKE ME shut my mouth :)
Man, i just can't respect this style of drumming when there's other college drumlines like Western Carolina University, University of Florida, Penn State, University of Northern Texas and other college drumlines with drum corps background. This style is sloppy and not really drumming in my opinion, way more dancing than anything.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
they at=re a showband so what do you expect them to do. if you havent noticce some bands have switched to this syle or have combined both. but if you want to see a drumline better than this look up scsu there drum captain is a former cadet snare capatain
Someone told me this was one of the best drumlines in the nation.... Now I will give it to them that this cadence has a pretty good beat. You may think I'm a stupid white boy and think that I only like "corps style" marching because I think FSU Big 8 drumline is the best in the nation. But they are, and they do groove as well. Listen to "Hatian Hustle" and you'll know what I mean.
it's all good machohamm05: we have two totally different styles...I respect both, being white has nothing to do with anything though, If you like it, well, you like it!!! LOL...much respect from a JSU '03 Grad...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
i hate this style of band. keep it corps. and when you say corps have no feeling, you make yourself look stupid. corps take more tim to perfect ther music.
Certain parts of this cadence sounds like Morris Browns Marching Cadence Called Series....if ya dont believe me go to morris brown percussion sections myspace page...myspacedot com/stickinsensation
White folks kill me by coming on showstyle videos talking about things they know nothing about yall are known for stealing if it wasn't for us there would be no blues, country, jazz, soul, funk, groove, rock&roll,or pop. Always curious about what we're doing more white people bought drumline than anybody!
White people invented drumlines. Besides, it's not just white people ragging on black people. It's good musicians ragging on bad ones. I know plenty of black people who march Corps and do it well, and I'm sure there are white people who play show style and are bad musicians to boot.
Yep white people invented drumlines but drums were invented in Africa and yes its white people ragging on showstyle because they cant do it but now you see them trying to do mini dance routines i thought that was look down upon at PWCS? besides the percussion instructor at Jackson State is white! at least he knows what funk is. and just because you march showstyle somebody from corps style automatically ASSume you cant play please its 2 totally different styles!
my point techincally the middle east is part of africa. anyone are you serious unless youre referring to yourself. just like i stated earlier corpstyle bands are beginning to put showband material in their shows the style of play fits the music ever heard of a drumset? thats what their drum section sound is based off of Jackson State is nothing more than a big Jazz band. we play more than whats on the radio son.
And yes, anyone. Look at Drum Corps and try to tell me with a straight face that they couldn't blow away show bands' percussion sections. If you're not going to play your hardest, why play at all?
Yea duh ! india is a part of Eurasia. ever heard of funk and groove mixed. that what we're about its a showband ! 2 dffferent styles but you're still trying to compare apples to oranges. playing wise depends on what types of heads your playing on. yea but it has no life because Drum Corps main focus is guess what rudiment perfection but that should be any percussionist main goal anyway since skipped around about what i said about a drumset sound that what this drumsection is based on.
Look at Blue Devils, or even Phantom Regiment this year. They play to popular jazz and even emulate a drum set (with their major impact points... the inner-beats are still low). Quarter notes should never be played at a non-impact point.
@Paralda actually you are very incorrect in your assumption. The first percussion instruments were made in Africa and were actually made from different size holes in the ground. When the player would smack the earth on the inside of the different size wholes it produced different tones. Later on the log drum and the djembe drum came into play.
I agree their drums do sound bad...but watching them has me ready to play some snare tomorrow--we play corps music though...lol...I almost wish I didn't graduate, so I could be back in highschool playing something like this with my old drumline [i was section leader ;] ]
I really feel sorry for these kids. They are playing their hearts out, but there drums sound horrible. STINGRAY drums are some of the most horrible drums you can play on It makes me wonder; are their music programs in such bad shape they are using drums athat are almost 20 years old. If they better drums and tuning they could sound much better. It would be nice to see other parts of the drumline as well however so much emphasis is put on the snare line TBC drumlines.
Even during the time, the stingrays were there back up drums for basketball games,prep-rallies, and minor events. They use their dynasty drums for football games and Battle of the Band events. Trust me, their music program isn't underfunded!!!
Well that is good to know! However, I thought if you are giving a public performance, pep rally or otherwise, you want to play on your best gear. I would hope that someone would put up a better video. . Although you can tell that the snares are some what clean. However, the bottom line is to me is don't you want the best sound for any public performance. Don't you want your students playing on a consistent playing surface all of the time anyway. If it is raining... then use the Stingrays.
I'm not from Jackson, but I love their snares. Jackson's snares crossover into all the different types of music they play without compromising the feel.
Yeah, Corp style drumlines are way fucking better than this crap. DCI all the way, motherfuckers!!! This is fucking talentless crap !! The movie DRUMLINE gave the wrong impression to what a real drumline is !!
I respectfully disagree with you....I think its ok to be diifferent. Corp Style good. BUT this style is good also..If anything the movie drumline brought much needed attention to school music programs throughout the country..At the end of the day we are all musicians playing because we love music...
Yeah, but you have to realize that a rodent with no talent could play the shit these Show bands are playing, where a very select, elite few, can even come close to playing Corps music.
Strongly disagree. Many corps players lack a certain kind of techniques to play on certain equipment and in certain music. Corps players are good at playing corps style (in most cases).
So you're saying a Corps player who can play polyrhythms and hybrid rudiments at 200 bpm whilst running 4 to 5s across a football field would be unable to play 16th notes at 120 while backsticking?
This comment lets me know you are not ready to play this style. Everything is not about textbook technique in music (even though that is important). Just try it in its element first then we can continue this convo (or just ask someone with an objective POV). BTW... I have played both. Not a matter of which is better or worse, They are different and not interchangable.
I have experience teaching students from both backrounds and notice the pros and cons of both. Just giving my thoughts.
I agree completely that everything isn't about pure technique. There is no more emotional instrument than a drum. If you're in a Corps and you're just playing notes and rhythms, you're doing something wrong.
JSU needs to take a drive 3 hours south to Poplarville and see how a clean college drumline plays this with better visuals. Sounds good and all but either they just sucked that day or that camera is way to damn close to them and fucking the sound up.
Man what happe to the clean sounding War and Thunder ,this use to be my favorite section when I was in high school in the mid 90's.This isnt commendable.
bout time somebody give MVSU some type of recognition........i played snare for valley from 05 to 07...i tried to chop face to face wit them boyz and the only thing they could say was MAN THATS JUST VALLEY...Jsu use to be clean togetha but now they sound rusty..basic 40 ass niggas .i know jsu funky but dam these boyz living of the old WT.....now them boyz had funk faces........now they just want to play a drum.man a long story short...........THEY JUST LOOK GOOD
Man JSU some pure D shit. They just HYPE, man all the other swac drumlines right there with them, they fallin off more and more every year, hate it or not its the truth. Big ups to the Krank, TOP coming up, oh yeh, the tenors from this college Mississippi Valley State tore in JSU ass the whole game and the quints. I was there, Jackson was scrared to play seem like it. I don't know what swac school i'm going to, alot of the swac schools coming up. JSU just hype to me!!!!!

@slickkapone hey asshole... i see a few rudiments here?

@slickkapone ha are you trying to say this is complex??
centraldrummer 1 year ago
@centraldrummer lol, first of all I never said this is complex, they're just on the yard playing loosely for some students. I should know I graduated from JSU. Check some of the other vidz, i'm not hating on corps style, I just prefer this style over it. Some people prefer corps style, nothing wrong with that!!!
slickkapone 1 year ago
@slickkapone well i prefer corps style but ive always wanted to march a season on a line like this just for the experience... i like drum corps playing but i think doing this for a season would be a blast just cuz i like to dance and add flashes in practices and such just to be goofin ha

sounds like a mouth full of shit to me... and what the fuck is up with all the goddamn dancing in black bands?

Oh, by the way, MAKE ME shut my mouth :)
seetherfan1369 2 years ago
Man, i just can't respect this style of drumming when there's other college drumlines like Western Carolina University, University of Florida, Penn State, University of Northern Texas and other college drumlines with drum corps background. This style is sloppy and not really drumming in my opinion, way more dancing than anything.

they at=re a showband so what do you expect them to do. if you havent noticce some bands have switched to this syle or have combined both. but if you want to see a drumline better than this look up scsu there drum captain is a former cadet snare capatain

Listen to "Hatian Hustle" and you'll know what I mean.
machohamm05 2 years ago 2
it's all good machohamm05: we have two totally different styles...I respect both, being white has nothing to do with anything though, If you like it, well, you like it!!! LOL...much respect from a JSU '03 Grad...

what was the point in the snare giving a tempo, if they were going to rush it about 15 clicks faster right after?
bcaviness 2 years ago 3
i wonder if they know that clicking sticks like that should have something to do with the speed. looks pretty stupid if they dont.

White folks kill me by coming on showstyle videos talking about things they know nothing about yall are known for stealing if it wasn't for us there would be no blues, country, jazz, soul, funk, groove, rock&roll,or pop. Always curious about what we're doing more white people bought drumline than anybody!
TrillCoop 2 years ago
White people invented drumlines. Besides, it's not just white people ragging on black people. It's good musicians ragging on bad ones. I know plenty of black people who march Corps and do it well, and I'm sure there are white people who play show style and are bad musicians to boot.
Paralda 2 years ago
Yep white people invented drumlines but drums were invented in Africa and yes its white people ragging on showstyle because they cant do it but now you see them trying to do mini dance routines i thought that was look down upon at PWCS? besides the percussion instructor at Jackson State is white! at least he knows what funk is. and just because you march showstyle somebody from corps style automatically ASSume you cant play please its 2 totally different styles!
TrillCoop 2 years ago
Actually, drums were invented in Asia/The Middle East, primarily around India in 5000 BC.
And anyone can play the easy shit show bands play. I've seen maybe one show band player actually know how to play, and that was Ralph Nader.
Paralda 2 years ago
my point techincally the middle east is part of africa. anyone are you serious unless youre referring to yourself. just like i stated earlier corpstyle bands are beginning to put showband material in their shows the style of play fits the music ever heard of a drumset? thats what their drum section sound is based off of Jackson State is nothing more than a big Jazz band. we play more than whats on the radio son.
TrillCoop 2 years ago
India is in Asia.
And yes, anyone. Look at Drum Corps and try to tell me with a straight face that they couldn't blow away show bands' percussion sections. If you're not going to play your hardest, why play at all?
Paralda 2 years ago
Yea duh ! india is a part of Eurasia. ever heard of funk and groove mixed. that what we're about its a showband !
TrillCoop 2 years ago
Look at Blue Devils, or even Phantom Regiment this year. They play to popular jazz and even emulate a drum set (with their major impact points... the inner-beats are still low). Quarter notes should never be played at a non-impact point.
Paralda 2 years ago
They couldn't. This comparison is pointless. Could jazz blow rock away? Could classical blow blues away?
I agree play your hardest or not at all. The content focuses on two totally different concepts with residue of each other due to setups and equipment.
chevbboy 2 years ago
@Paralda actually you are very incorrect in your assumption. The first percussion instruments were made in Africa and were actually made from different size holes in the ground. When the player would smack the earth on the inside of the different size wholes it produced different tones. Later on the log drum and the djembe drum came into play.
conpsiquence151 1 year ago

OndrausCissell 2 years ago
Even during the time, the stingrays were there back up drums for basketball games,prep-rallies, and minor events. They use their dynasty drums for football games and Battle of the Band events. Trust me, their music program isn't underfunded!!!
therawest601 2 years ago
Well that is good to know! However, I thought if you are giving a public performance, pep rally or otherwise, you want to play on your best gear. I would hope that someone would put up a better video. . Although you can tell that the snares are some what clean. However, the bottom line is to me is don't you want the best sound for any public performance. Don't you want your students playing on a consistent playing surface all of the time anyway. If it is raining... then use the Stingrays.
OndrausCissell 2 years ago
I'm not from Jackson, but I love their snares. Jackson's snares crossover into all the different types of music they play without compromising the feel.

Yeah, Corp style drumlines are way fucking better than this crap. DCI all the way, motherfuckers!!! This is fucking talentless crap !! The movie DRUMLINE gave the wrong impression to what a real drumline is !!
DreamNeonBlack 2 years ago
I respectfully disagree with you....I think its ok to be diifferent. Corp Style good. BUT this style is good also..If anything the movie drumline brought much needed attention to school music programs throughout the country..At the end of the day we are all musicians playing because we love music...
zeljr 2 years ago 3
Yeah, but you have to realize that a rodent with no talent could play the shit these Show bands are playing, where a very select, elite few, can even come close to playing Corps music.
Paralda 2 years ago
Strongly disagree. Many corps players lack a certain kind of techniques to play on certain equipment and in certain music. Corps players are good at playing corps style (in most cases).
chevbboy 2 years ago
So you're saying a Corps player who can play polyrhythms and hybrid rudiments at 200 bpm whilst running 4 to 5s across a football field would be unable to play 16th notes at 120 while backsticking?
I don't think so.
Paralda 2 years ago
This comment lets me know you are not ready to play this style. Everything is not about textbook technique in music (even though that is important). Just try it in its element first then we can continue this convo (or just ask someone with an objective POV). BTW... I have played both. Not a matter of which is better or worse, They are different and not interchangable.
I have experience teaching students from both backrounds and notice the pros and cons of both. Just giving my thoughts.
chevbboy 2 years ago
I agree completely that everything isn't about pure technique. There is no more emotional instrument than a drum. If you're in a Corps and you're just playing notes and rhythms, you're doing something wrong.

You are so right.
