@PugSleasy this is actually pretty good way to explain lionel...when i listened as a kid (my fave group all time since i was 8yrs) i thought he sounded really funky ...as i listen now he sounds like he was trying really hard to be funky lol...and he has admitted that he modeled his style after sugar or whatever his name is from ohio players
@Melbow14n Sugar = Leroy Bonner? Yes! He played guitar for the Ohio Players, yes!! He and Lionel did sound a lot alike. Another lead singer who mimed that sound was Larry Dotson (Bar-Kays) Listen(if you can find it) to a tune they recorded called, "Holy Ghost."
Lionel never claimed himself loyal to any particular brand, how could he have sold out? I still have this on 45 amazing. And, yes they were good back then.
@duvexy You're right! IMO, Lionel Richie didn't sell out or lose his "blackness". Your race shouldn't determine what type of music you should make/perform for the rest of your life. Sure, many folks may think a lot of his later music was hokey, cheesy or "sell out music"--but the man did what he wanted to do at the specific time. I saw Lionel perform with the Commodores last summer on the Essence Music awards and he STILL held it down!
@woodie62 ....believe me, lionel knew clyde was the man....i read an article once when i was a kid where he described walter's voice as 'grits and molasses' i asked my mom what the heck that meant and she told me it basically meant that lionel was describing clyde's voice as 'rough and smooth' at the same time...still didn't understand since i was so young but i never forgot it lol
hang on... what's with the random modern-day tv show panel shots? That's not 1977! What tv show was this? And why were they playing exerpts of incredible funk (not that I'd be complaining)
Now THIS is some baddass oldschool funk...before Lionel sold out. Compare this to Wild Cherry's "Play That Funky Music" and you'll see where WC got their inspiration.
Fantastic song, and those huge glasses, well I'm guessing they must of been the rage for 1978 as Con Funk Shun wore them on Soul Train performing Fun Fun Fun, now days girls wear blowfly glasses lol. Seriously, this is a great piece of funky disco music!

What I've found out just now is that I like those songs best where Lionel Richie isn't the main vocalist.

@kax61 Lionel was a good love songster, and not too bad of a uptempo one either. But uptempo Commodores tunes belonged to Clyde!!!

The song is bumping. The Commodors lokk stiff and tired and seem to be just possing in their outfits.
Buckeyecat2002 3 years ago 3
the look stiff because they probably don't hvae enough room on that stage to move around! ha ha ha-but i think they did a great job here.
nivak11 3 years ago 4
Awesome! Diggin the outfits! Say, on a side note: did anyone else notice that Thomas McClary is absent?
WannaBeFreeToKnow 3 years ago 10
yes-Thomas Mclary is missing. this is around the time he sliced up his hand accidently while trying to remove a glass from a dishwasher.
