yeah its so underrated band .... damn.... some people cannot just come back from dark to light~ ... im pretty sure they havent heard anything from doves and they started critisize with no proof...
i was checking out what to do tonight and saw that Doves are playin the Vic in Chicago 24$ i might go eventhough i just found out about this band like 2 hours ago
let's give it a try and 431972 said they rock live, let's trust him or her...
I'd love to catch them live! Just a great song, the vocal harmony on the chorus, fantastic as is the phrasing w/guitar! The whole thing is layered excepionally well for such a straight ahead tune. I can crank this song all day long!
This would have gone over great when I was coming up in the 70s too, it's a truly timeless piece. Quite an accomplishment to transcend any era!
Congrats to the boys and thanks for sharing the live clip!
The keyboardist is playing ..err... the keyboard part! The clues are that it's EXACTLY the same bass part as the album e.g. at 2:45 there's a distinctive slide up an octave on the bass, in which you can hear slide over the guitar frets (hard to reproduce on a keyboard). The other clue is that the drummer is playing along to a 'click track' (via headphones) in order to get the timing spot on with the bass track. There's no shame in it... I love Doves - going to see them in two weeks!
I had been wondering about the fretting as well... I think you're right now. Though then I'm wondering what the keyboard is doing for the majoring of the song--I can't pick it out.
I think the keyboard is just playing some nice backgound chords to fill out the tune, you can just about pick it out at the beginning of the choruses (e.g.1:40 to 1:50). I can't wait to see them next week!
seriously cool band. we took the first album on hols to mexico a few years back, and this song became the anthem(hardly a shock though judging by the lyrics!)
Check out Live at Eden the live cd. There's a separate DVD called "Where We're Calling from" that has the video footage of said concert. It's in 5.1 surround sound and has the music videos, documentaries, etc. I highly recommend both.
It's a shame to me that very few other Doves songs have quite the same gut wrenching energy as this wonderul piece of music-reminds me of their Sub Sub classic "This time I'm not wrong" with Barney Sumner.
absolutely fantastic tune..one of my favourite band of all time!!!
