I'd love to catch them live! Just a great song, the vocal harmony on the chorus, fantastic as is the phrasing w/guitar! The whole thing is layered excepionally well for such a straight ahead tune. I can crank this song all day long!

This would have gone over great when I was coming up in the 70s too, it's a truly timeless piece. Quite an accomplishment to transcend any era!

The keyboardist is playing ..err... the keyboard part! The clues are that it's EXACTLY the same bass part as the album e.g. at 2:45 there's a distinctive slide up an octave on the bass, in which you can hear slide over the guitar frets (hard to reproduce on a keyboard). The other clue is that the drummer is playing along to a 'click track' (via headphones) in order to get the timing spot on with the bass track. There's no shame in it... I love Doves - going to see them in two weeks!

I had been wondering about the fretting as well... I think you're right now. Though then I'm wondering what the keyboard is doing for the majoring of the song--I can't pick it out.

I think the keyboard is just playing some nice backgound chords to fill out the tune, you can just about pick it out at the beginning of the choruses (e.g.1:40 to 1:50). I can't wait to see them next week!

Check out Live at Eden the live cd. There's a separate DVD called "Where We're Calling from" that has the video footage of said concert. It's in 5.1 surround sound and has the music videos, documentaries, etc. I highly recommend both.
