What ended up being hip hop was also started by a Jamaican (Kool Herc). There is also Jamaican hip hop, which is obviously heavily influenced by reggae. Even look at the Jamaican tradition of toasting, and compare that with freestlye rapping.

I would say hip hop drew heavily from reggae, and some hip hop still shows it.
