Haha..our 1 year old home with this product is getting bad. This stuff flakes off with a finger. The boards are already popping and failing. The neighborhood looks like patchwork homes!
#1 reason it rots is becuse caulk fails fast with contraction & expansion and allows water in and does not allow air to dry quick. I can't beleive they are reccomending caulk when there are may products in the market that are better. Check out the butt joint flashing and window flahings made my Tamlyn.com before you install your siding.
Fact: LP has completely changed how the produce their SmartSide since 1987. Instead of a single board being treated, every wood flake in their boards is treated before they're pressed in to the siding.
Fact: ANY wood siding is going to take on water if it's sitting in it. Try moving the water away from the Town Homes. We all need water to live, but too much and we drown, right?
Our 22 Unit Town Homes complex built in 1987 has LP Siding on it. It has warping so bad that you can reach up under the siding to grab the insulation. The siding is badly deteriorating where ever water sits, like along the bottom of all the boards, in all nailed areas where over time the seal is broken and the areas swell up and allow more water in. In sum, it all needs to come off now and 14,0000 feet of new siding needs to be installed.
