Buses in Europe have had driver shields for years. Here in Calgary they have not been installed for cost reasons although most buses do have cameras they do nothing to protect drivers from attack.
It sucks to see what bus drivers have to deal with. To be able to communicate with passengers is necessary. I don't believe that this shield will be effective enough but in NYC, you can get up to 7 YEARS in jail if you assault a bus driver. That is the path other cities should follow. We do not have those shields in place and nothing usually happens to the drivers which is a great thing and this being a large city, if we can prevent crime towards bus drivers here, other cities can too.
How sad that those drivers have to deal with that crap from someone they are trying to help in the first place. Why didn't the bus companies think of this safety device earlier?
Its about phuckin time! Europe has had those things for years, and Ive been sayin that the U.S should have these installed on all buses, including school buses. It should be mandatory by federal law, like the ada wheelchair stuff is mandatory by law. When I start my transit agency soon, all my vehicles will be fitted with these.
Interesting video. It would seem you guys over in the states are a bit behinf the times. I'm a bus driver in Glasgow, Scotland, and anti-assault screens have been fitted to drivers cabs on our buses for years and years. Personally, I wouldn't drive a bus without one.
@mallen88 we dont have those in vancouver canada and with some areas around here they should have em, but i think they are getting put on but very very slowly tho
how very sad. Talking to the passengers is one of the best part of the job.
the shield will not solve anything. safety issues will not stop with walls and shields: training, psychology and safety in the streets for everyone: taking assaults seriously; and meeting the needs of all the angry people... why are they angry in the first place? Is it mainly drugs, alcohol that interferes with their social graces? is it a break down of social structure? have we lost the ability to just be friendly?

This problem is not confined only to DC. A lot of transit systems have problems with operator assaults.
