@SaGalv it is the same technology that is in your refridgerator, central ac unit or window ac unit idiot. these things can have manufacturing issues from the factory. its not uncommon. unlike DODGE whose ac units never work, chevrolets which last about 90k then leak, fords which just blow out their lines. oh yeah they are much more reliable.
@mysqueeker No it is not, it is a DC motor, which is not as reliable as a AC induction motor any household unit whould use. Go ahead an got to rockauto.com. Look up the price of the new a/c compressor for my truck (2003 ford ranger) and look up the same part for a pruis of any year and tell me which is cheaper to replace when it fails. BTW I used to own a 1987 ford bronco and the original a.c worked on that vehicle with no leaks or so called "blown lines"
@SaGalv Forget what I said. this is an AC induction motor. Even so, now you need to worry about an inverter failing.... along with the compressor itself
@SaGalv the inverters on prius's hardly ever fail. there has never been a issue with a inverter failing. and a fyi 1995 taurus ac quit at 86k miles high pressure blow out, 1996 taurus ac failed at 103k miles, 2002 ford taurus ac failed at 100k. my uncle has a 2008 ford truck it has 32k miles the ac is shot, my cousin has a ford van with 65k miles the ac blew. that is enough to say for me that the ac units are prone to failure. maybe the old ones were ok but the new ones are shit.
@mysqueeker The a/c lines blew out on the taurus because the motor mounts were bad and that stressed the lines. I know because Ive been there before. Lines do not just randomly blow out, and taurus are known for bad motor mounts. You have a very shitty mechanic if he told you the lines were the ONLY problem...either that or he just wanted to rip you off when you came back a month later. Ive owned a few fords an none have had a/c problems including my current 2003 ford.
@SaGalv motor mounts were perfectly fine. there is a fine line when a hole developes in the high pressure line vs when the lines get bent an cracked open. that being said im pleased with prius ac units. mine had nearly 200k miles and still as working even after going off a 15' embankment, and hitting a elk fence pole and landing in a slue. might i also add the car still drove as well as blowing nice cold ac.
@mysqueeker Then you had a very rare occurance with the taurus. everyones experence with a vehicle may differ. For instance, my father own a 199-somthing GMC sonoma. It blew its original engine, and was replaced with a rebuilt one. Which started to fail and blow blue smoke within about 2 years, where as I bought a 1994 chevy s-10 (SAME truck, different badges) with 195,000 miles on it, original motor. NO engine problems at all. Im not sure the mileage on the gmc, but it was no 195,000 miles.
they should put these on regular vehicles i know they'll save a lot of gas i bet there really expensive too
