I go to a school that marches drum corp style (I think that's what it's called. The way DCI does it), and most of the people in the all of the bands that I see think that military marching is really boring and stupid, more or less. I don't see how they can think it's boring, it cannot be easy to walk in lines that pass through each other without hitting other people. I think most people don't pay attention to the technically aspects and worry about the pictures too much.
A friend of mine who was in this band explained to me how they do this. The mechanics are fairly simple, but the discipline it takes to pull it off is what is truly impressive.
@Iololz what the hell are YOU talking about? Where does the OSUMB march from FOUR different directions in 3 columns (never mind the drum major in the middle) crossing in 4 directions?
Does any place on this great World Wide Web of ours actually give information on HOW this is done, instead of just repeating how computers say it's impossible? If not this, how about the minstrel turn for a block like they do?
No offense, but if it's so difficult, why are the details of its execution also proprietary? Wouldn't the work needed to pull it off even if it was available be enough to keep cheap imitators away?
Yknow how like some people's "secret ingredient" for great cookies is like, Nestle chocolate chips? It doesn't mean they won't guard the secret to their grave.
It's simple really...stay in your lane, 30 inch steps, don't hit anyone, don't get out of line, don't get out of distance, don't get out of step, and never, never, never EVER stop. And keep playing.
Nuthin to it...marched my four years and only minor injuries...BQ'95
@JFMello1116 Actually I always thought the "Minstrel Turns" were harder. I got hit more often during those than on the Cross-through.
On the Minstrel Turns, you have to twist your upper body while walking straight on, so that you sort of rub shoulders and slide off of each other. And if I recall correctly, if the guy you're passing is on your left, his right foot goes just on the other side of your right foot as you pass each other.

The OSUMB has been doing that "magic trick" since 1936. And not with straight, constant 6 to 5 either.

@Iololz Sorry, but without video evidence, no one believes you
