Loool dude u made the whole German armor yourself :O How long does it take? where did u learn to do this and can one make a living nowadays being an armorsmith?
@jeanpauldesens personally i use roofing nails and i think thats what he used here, basically a home-made rivet, just snip it so it barely pokes through the 2 layers of sheet and mushroom the end.whole lot cheaper than buying a box of rivets too:)
@Madmachine73 not trying to start an arrgument or any thing, but most of it is made from 16g mild steel. It is about 1.5 mm thick. have you ever tryed to stab threw 1.5mm mild steel. or shoot threw it with a bow. I mean yeah it wont stop a bullet. but it is as thick as it needs to be for it's purpase. I know becouse I used to think the same as you till I started makeing armor my self. but the first pease I ever made I realised I was wrong.
@1990christopher Nah I respect your argument. It just happens that I sometimes find really thin armor for what it is on reenactement camps & it surprises me. I haven't fired with bows, but I did shoot through plates it with a bolt at 40 yards. I'm more of a crossbowmen. )))
@Madmachine73 Although there are crap armors out there that you could stab threw with a sharp stick. lol but armor made by a true artisan like Eric are acctualy made rite. But like I said I totaly know where your comeing from.
It looks realy good! But this is not cold forging. This is only cold forming. Cold forging stands up from cold hardening and than cold forming. Try it. Cold forging is the best method of armoure making. It makes the steel far more stronger than hot forging.
well, if u are lucky, u can find an armorer in your city, you just have to look for it, if u live in a country without any decent armorer, like me, then you just have to learn watching this kind of videos, and a lot of webpages about armors, the equipment ...with some basic tools u can make some simple pieces, but if u want to go pro u'll need a lot of money XD see ya
Omg, you inspire me to be an armor smith so badly, but it's one dream I can never get. Haha. Keep up the awesome vids, buddy. Don't see many armor smiths making videos with quality (and skill!) like yours. Not to mention great music taste. :D Subbed.
I cant get enough of these vids, im trying to make armor myself in the danish reactment community, and these films are a great help ! Please keep 'em coming ! 5 stars and double thumbs up !
I'm hoping that you craft a historically accurate nasal helm at some point. I have wanted to make one to pass down to my sons along with my chainmail. But would feel better before starting if i had some form of video reference. From what i know it is made of one piece, and either raised or dished? Anyhow, awesome vid Eric.
Thank you, thank you, you are the only person who posts videos on how to make armour and i can't say thank you enough for the visual guide for us aspiring blacksmiths. :-D
Yeah that's what I was thinking but even with the 120 grit discs I don't get a finish that smooth, there's still grinder marks. I haven't found discs with a grit higher than that.
120 grit? I know the video isnt all that great but you are not going to convince be there isnt a scotch brite wheel or another grit step in there! That polish is far too even! :)
I sand with 120-grit and then I polished on a 14-inch cotton wheel with greaseless 150-grit compound and then I pass it on a wire wheel with olive oil on it and then the final touch I go over it by hand with a 150 grit or so scotch brite.

Some very nice work there!
But I still don't want to wear it in fight.
The steel is way to soft.
A pollaxe would smash through it like through butter.

No offense but these armour aren't thick enough in my opinion. I recon forge is necessary for thicker metal parts.

Wow... j'aurais pas pensé qu'il y avait autant de travail sur une pièce qui semble simple. Cela s'avère plus complexe que ce que je pensais.
Bravo^^ C'est un excellent vidéo soit dit en passant!

Could we please have a pattern for this from you to help us try this design?

9260 Spring Steel good for armor? Or 4100 steel is better?

Too bad armor has no use in the modern world of warfare. Almost any bullet calibur will go through a suit of armor.
Your better off wearing nothing.

the crucible is a great place to learn metal work!
mhunf1 2 years ago
The cost is obviously the price of metal and the cost of equipent. Ie: Hammers, vices and so on.
So if you have the equipment and know how, it is probably cheap!

Flap disks can be obtained all the way upto about 600grit.
120 is about as useful as they get for this kind of application though.
