shortboards work in any kind of surf, if you know how to surf.
not to take anything away from the ability of the guys in this video, but we get similar conditions here on the east coast quite often, and we do full rail turns, snaps, airs, roundhouse cutbacks, and in general smoth fast shredding. on shortboards.
i look at the waves on this video, and all i see are ramps, air sections galore... riding a shortboard.
if its too small to ride a shortboard, its too small to surf.
My bet is 6t, though it's hard for me to tell, in Toronto at least, the biggest that ever reach shore is about that - simply because there's this underwater cliff that surrounds the city, which tends to break all the really big waves a miles or so off shore - if you view Google earth, and turn on Bathymetry, you'll see it, few people know it's there.
Oh, and also, the prevailing winds are off shore , typically North West, it's gotta be out of the east for a few days before they really get big.
yeah, Lake Ontario - waves can reach 20ft way out in the middle, but near beaches, on a good windy day (typically NOT in summer ) you'll find 5ft faces if you now where to look: note - the lake is bloody cold!
@CusterFlux But the shore break can sometime be bigger than 5ft right? A few of the waves in this video look to have 6 to 8ft faces to me. I'm a surfer from Hawaii who is fairly good at estimating wave heights - but I may be wrong.
no way i know ben i was in his wakeboarding school for a week its was awsome but he codn't o anydemos cuz he had a broken leg but this is sick cuz i live in belleville

You do understand that this is a lake right, not an ocean. Thats pretty incredible that you can surf like that on a lake.

have you discovered fish and long boards yet? Shortboards only work in good surf.I surf Santa Cruz and we don't surf shortboards in surf like that.

Whoa! That wave at 2:00 has gotta be 8 or 9ft high. Wow - amazing how the shore break can get that big even on the smallest of the Great Lakes.
