And for those that may flame me for my comments, I urge you to listen to some of the classic scores and compare them to Zimmer et al. I'm not saying I don't enjoy Zimmer, Shore, Elfman... I do (Elfman and Thomas Newman among my face modern composers). But Max Steiner was taught composition by BRAHMS and MAHLER! Graduating from musical academy in 2 years instead of 4. Newman was taught by Shoenberg...The Golden Age composers were incredible composers.
Tough list since you cannot include everyone worthy. Alfred Newman should be on the list for sure. He was part of the golden age along with Stieiner, Korngold, Waxman etc. I applaud you for trying to teach some of the younger generation about real artists and their works. While I enjoy the likes of Zimmer and Shore, I can compose in their styles when needed without much fuss. Trying to compose and arrange like Benny Herrmann??? Much tougher task.
I know you couldn't include every major composer in one video, but leaving out Alfed Newman is still hard to believe. This man is probably more identified with film music than any other. Alex North seems to lack enough general popularity or romantic warmth musically to make most lists. Goldsmith considered him the sinlge finest of the 2nd generation of film composers.
I don't mean to offend any fans of the 3rd generation of film composers, but I have to agree with proman84. I don't know if it's a lack of focus in their training experiences or just the negative general attitude of most modern film-makers to film music, but there is a huge gulf between the quality of film music from 1930 to 1990 and what's come since (with rare exceptions). It would be extremely difficult to list just 10 scores for each decade up to 1992. Can't think of 10 great scores since
I agree with many people, who say: there are many great composer in the movies history. But, i think Hans Zimmer is the world greatest. He is the best.
I also wanted to invite you all to enter my youtube channel - I'm a pianist and composer, and wish to write music for films. I have on my youtube 7 different pieces I composed ... I need your support guys - come and also leave some comments. Thank you !
Not easy to select just one short piece for each of these wonderful composers. If I'd attempted this video I'd probably never have been able to make the final selection for each. Is the Barry cue in the movie itself? I don't recognise it from OHMSS.
Also I would have added Alfred Newman and (as previously commented) Elmer Bernstein. But then where do you stop! Franz Waxman, Alex North, etc., etc.
Whats the song by John Williams at 1:30 ? and also the one after at 2:07 ? which I recognise from the film 'the goonies' but don't think it was originally made for that.
1:30 is "The Asteroid Field" from The Empire Strikes Back. I'm not sure abot 2:07 but it sounds extremely familiar. But it also sounds like something someone modeled after Rimsky-Korsakov.

Great selections, wonderful job. Except you left out Alex North, easily in the top 25. He's only one of 2 film composers to get the lifetime achievement award.
Wise to use "Eye Of Needle" track for Rozsa. Also, happy you included Mancini. Ever hear "The Ghost And Mrs. Muir"? Perhaps Herrman's best; titles and film.
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir is arguably Hermann's bet work. It's beautiful, ahunting and sad and pleasant at the same time.
The Rozsa track is from DEAD MEN DON'T WEAR PLAID, and I think captures his style really well, even in a parody/homage to his own works. There are parts of that score that would fit well on top of a sword and sandal epic as perfectly as they would on a gritty noir thriller.
i like the way you choose the uncliche score theme for each composer, cause mostly they gave us "star wars" from JW or "malena" from EM..... creative work, keep on the good job bro....
