Also your comments were disgusting. My husband fought in Vietnam, got the Bronze Star with V, and the purple heart, actually Reckless was awarded a combat ribbon. Other horses also were used in the Korean War, but this horse was special. My husband was poisoned by the drinking water at Camp Lejeune, sprayed with Agent Orange and other chemicals. He developed liver cancer, and received the poorest of care of VA. I suppose you would have rude remarks about him as well. Read what a Marine is.
I have read the book about Reckless, the Korean Warhouse. It appears nula07 and galloway62042009 are so wrong, but they do not even know, whole story of Reckless, such an ignorant comment, He did the work of 10 Marines. each time Reckless brought up the extremely heavy supplies, he found the Marines where ever they were. He brought countless of Wounded Marines back with her. Fighting in coming. He saved more lives in many ways, then any other Marine in that War. My husband was a Marinehero.
oh, please, find somewhere else to vent. In the meantime...go back and read comments. It's a wonderful film, about a War Horse. None of us were there, or knows what it was like to be there. Put your own spin on it as much as you'd like I've got heroes in my family as well; whatever gallo whatever is splatting about hasn't a thing to do with me. Seriously, read.
@galloway62042009 Carrying supplies is actually pretty crucial, without them soldiers would be fucked. That horse saved more lives than you give her credit for, and the fact she made it out alive and in one piece is pretty amazing. The people that died are heroes too, but alot of heroes names goes unsung.
"What about the young men who left their families to truly fight for their countries, never to return? They're the heroes, not this little mare that got shot on a battlefield. "
Some day, you'll grow up. And know the story, read history, and not be so full of yourself. Then, you'll know. Until then....seriously, learn. It's history.
Absolutely. No need to be so specific. You and I weren't there, the people, the animals, were killed. In War. Settle down. It's a film, it's a war story, about a War Horse. They existed, it's reality, Greg.
@galloway62042009 Settle down. So, all about you? "Im only talking about the horse . "All I'm saying is' ' I don't think " The fact that it's a horse is just a big Novelty". Spielberg, as anti-gun and anti-war as he is, always has a way to show honor in war in his movies. Joey is honored. Maybe one day we can get SSgt Reckless honored in the same manner. From a Former Marine to a Marine War Hero, Ooh-rah SSgt. Reckless. A TRUE Marine.
It is too bad that our bureaucrats in Washington have no such respect for Animal "Buddies". In case anyone missed it America now permits horse meat to be sold for human consumption. Apparently this is a concession to a growing Muslim population and the French culture.

I hope this video tops the million mark and the ball gets rolling to resume Reckless to her rightful place as a nationally known hero. And to correct some other commenters, she was named Reckless after the type of ammunition she carried. @pipingmarine Pay attention, sweetie! She was wounded twice according to the vid. Granted, they don't mention if it was by enemy fire, but it seems plausible.
@CharmedMcMahoniacs I DID see where she was wounded. I was responding to Suesongs48 who thought the Purple Heart was awarded for bravery. Generally, it's not given for wounds from "friendly fire", but, as you said, she was probably injured due to "hostile fire". Misnomers! ALL fire is "hostile" if it's comin' at YOU. I was in 'Nam. and have seen 'em both headed my way. Thanks for your post.
@pipingmarine I should scold myself for not paying full attention then . ;) My apologies and thanks for clearing it up in both cases. :) :) Maybe we can agree on Reckless deserving both medals?
(Personally, I think any one who braves fire ("friendly" or otherwise) should get a medal.)
THAT RITE THERE WAS JUST AWESOME AS ALL CAN BE. WHAT A COURAGIOUS MARINE, "SSGT RECKLESS"! THANKYA FER YERS COURAGIOUS EFFORT IN SERVICE DURING WARTIME BATTLE. MAY YA REST IN PEACE, BRAVE ONE. THANYA TO ALL MY FELLOW SERVICE MEMBERS----ARMY, NAVY, AIRFORCE, MARINES, & COAST GUARD, PAST, PRESENT, & FUTURE FER YERS MILITARY SERVICE. GOD BLESS EACH & EVERY ONE OF YA. I GIVE YA A FELLOW MILITARY SALUTE!
In London there is a memorial dedicated to all the animals who were used in all the wars of the British Empire. It is simple and beautiful, with an inscription which reads
"They had no choice." The Brits may be many things, but they DO love their animals!
Yes, animals are amazing creatures which God has made for man to be responsible for. I've heard many a stories about war animals and also civil service animals...like the firehorses who were so conditioned to hauling firewagons even when they were retired when they heard an alarm they'd still try to respond. I had a really great cowpony who saved my life from a quicksand bog.
@1Way21001 "God has made for man to be responsible for"? Wow. Why don't you stop breathing through your mouth, pick your knuckles up off the floor, and drag yourself out of the 15th century.

I have always been an animal lover. It was a proud moment for the marines honoring the horse called Reckless . It's a really good thing there was a movie and book made. This video has touched a lot of people . I love this true story and will never forget it.
There was a movie made, probably in the late '40s or early '50s, I would love to see this movie again. I would really love to own a DVD of this movie. TCM, are you listening??? I even have-had- the book "Reckless, Pride of the Marines". Hope that someone will do a remake of this wonderful movie-without the mushy love story , like in the original..As for the price of hay...OMG! Anyone with a horse knows that pain all too well.
I think what the $125 a bale refers to is the large 5X6 round bales of hay, they weigh about 5/8 of a ton, and yes, that is how much they cost. And a square bale, of about 70-85 lbs costs us (here is drought-wrecked Texas) is about $8-$10.
@amykstewart 12 FOR A SQUARE HERE IN FLORIDA AND IT IS NOT THAT GOOD OF HEY BUT THE ROUND BALES WAS LIKE 80 AND AGAIN NOT THAT GOOD OF GRASS IN FLORIDA.i REMEMBER kY HAD A DROUGHT AND THERE WAS SHIPPED FROM Colorado FOR OVER 13 A BALL.wE ENDED GIVING AWAY 3 HORSE AND KEPT THE STUD HORSE
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@Chuck41148 -Seriously? Cut through the emotion and let's use some logic! We're talking about an ANIMAL! I think the Marines who "awarded" this animal RANK & MEDALS should have a Psych evaluation. You may want to go get one yourself for recommending a CMOH for this horse.
I "liked" this video. The USMC sure got there money's worth when they bought this animal.
@sinner175- The military has a long history of honoring animals that served alongside soldiers, going back even farther than the ancient Greeks and Romans.
Chuck you've got to be kidding you jackass. How many times have 'you' gone up/down a hill to give service to those in need? For a horse to be taught what she needed to do, did it, and got wounded twice is beyond a miracle. Emotions? Cut the emotions? I don't think you have any or you wouldn't have posted such an appalling comment. I wish you well in you judgemental life.
The humane and compassionate treatment of animals is one indicator of a society's greatness. The use of animals in war is a questionable practice today given technological advances. That they were used in the Korean War is understandable, but nothing to be celebrated.

What a wonderful horse. Kudos to those who trained her and loved her. They must have been terrific for her to do what she did for them. Thank you, Marines for honoring her with a good retirement.
I totally agree! I enjoyed this story so much, and I too am tired of political demigods trying to make the rest of humanity live their lives feeling guilty about even existing on this earth!
@beckyhigh "If brains were made out of cotton-seed, you wouldn't have enough to kotex a flea".. YOU ANTI-CATHOLIC LIBERAL SACK-OF-MONKEY-DUNG...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@cajink - I had to go back a few days to figure out what you were talking about, and I'm still not sure your response had anything to do with what I posted. Who were you quoting? Kotex isn't made of cotton seed, and fleas have no use for menstrual pads. Cotton seed is pressed for oil and to grow more cotton plants AFAIK.. I will never pass up a chance to denigrate the Ghoul of Calcutta and her defenders. Your confusing attempts at insult just serve to prove my point.
Why would anyone think that horse slaughter was 'humane' in the US unless you have very strange ideas of what that is.
I am so glad to see that they did take care of this horse until the end of her life, unlike what they did to the dogs they left behind in Vietnam. It's hard to watch stories and find out that the hero horse or dog was let down in the end by the humans the dog or horse served.
This story is beyond fantastic, and as a ex-jockey myself, I am not posting this on a group I head up on Facebook, called *Female Jockeys*. Hope to see you all there.
What a horse goes through in a slaughter house is NOT humane. As for euthanizing - are you saying a sick and dying horse can't be put to sleep by a vet?
I find that difficult to understand. Anyway, perhaps people shouldn't own a horse unless they're prepared to take care of it its whole life and not just while it's young and can do your bidding. Like dogs and cats and other pets. You don't just toss them in the trash cause they got old.

I am glad she was honored, very touching. Horses should be left free to roam on the land that was supposed to be preserved for them, but are being taken over by cattle ranchers and BP pipeline.
Someone come up with a screenplay, please!!

In London there is a memorial dedicated to all the animals who were used in all the wars of the British Empire. It is simple and beautiful, with an inscription which reads
"They had no choice." The Brits may be many things, but they DO love their animals!

I love this horse! She was quite a hero! I am also tickled she was a race horse before she was a soldier horse.
Wow! I hope her spirit knows how much America appreciated her efforts!

I have always been an animal lover. It was a proud moment for the marines honoring the horse called Reckless . It's a really good thing there was a movie and book made. This video has touched a lot of people . I love this true story and will never forget it.
dceokusa1 5 months ago 2
There was a movie made, probably in the late '40s or early '50s, I would love to see this movie again. I would really love to own a DVD of this movie. TCM, are you listening??? I even have-had- the book "Reckless, Pride of the Marines". Hope that someone will do a remake of this wonderful movie-without the mushy love story , like in the original..As for the price of hay...OMG! Anyone with a horse knows that pain all too well.
KALininger65 5 months ago 2
I think what the $125 a bale refers to is the large 5X6 round bales of hay, they weigh about 5/8 of a ton, and yes, that is how much they cost. And a square bale, of about 70-85 lbs costs us (here is drought-wrecked Texas) is about $8-$10.
amykstewart 5 months ago
@amykstewart 12 FOR A SQUARE HERE IN FLORIDA AND IT IS NOT THAT GOOD OF HEY BUT THE ROUND BALES WAS LIKE 80 AND AGAIN NOT THAT GOOD OF GRASS IN FLORIDA.i REMEMBER kY HAD A DROUGHT AND THERE WAS SHIPPED FROM Colorado FOR OVER 13 A BALL.wE ENDED GIVING AWAY 3 HORSE AND KEPT THE STUD HORSE

The USMC sure got there money's worth when they bought this animal.
sinner175 5 months ago
@sinner175- The military has a long history of honoring animals that served alongside soldiers, going back even farther than the ancient Greeks and Romans.
beckyhigh 5 months ago 3
Chuck you've got to be kidding you jackass. How many times have 'you' gone up/down a hill to give service to those in need? For a horse to be taught what she needed to do, did it, and got wounded twice is beyond a miracle. Emotions? Cut the emotions? I don't think you have any or you wouldn't have posted such an appalling comment. I wish you well in you judgemental life.
Swamp611 5 months ago
@Swamp611 Your name calling shows your lack of maturity.(I'm not Chuck). :)
Zero, but I'm not the topic of this video.
Horse training "beyond a miricle"? IMO it's not even a miricle, however that's defined. Animals have been taught to do amazing things.
Re-read my post. I wrote "cut THROUGH the emotions" That means to take somthing at face value.
Thanks for the well wishes. Being able to think objectivly has served me well throught my life.

The humane and compassionate treatment of animals is one indicator of a society's greatness. The use of animals in war is a questionable practice today given technological advances. That they were used in the Korean War is understandable, but nothing to be celebrated.

A very good story about Ssgt. Reckless. The U.S. military has many fine stories about animal war heroes.
The propaganda from the Humane-Society types that fill these responses is
beyond stupidity. Their choke-damped religion is beginning to fill the world with boredom.
A bale of good hay today, Sept. 11, 20011, is $4.50. For someone to say that they are paying $125 a bale is trying to fool the gullible.
I have more respect for that horse,

cajink 5 months ago
