  • Best ending ever :')

  • My favorite movie. I like this ending.. even if it's perhaps considered pretty cheesy by some.. It's truely inspirational because maybe, just maybe things will be alright... in the end..

  • When i was 19 yrs old yrs ago. I spent a night i a cell for a minor offence. Even though though it was one night at that young age, i still felt a sense a freedom in the morning...

  • I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams... I hope

  • watched this in class. obviously cried like a baby : ' )

  • @Gigglez765 I did the same thing when I first saw the Black Stallion in photo class in 1981. The whole class was just stunned and in tears. We all clapped afterwards. It had sort of the same meaning as this movie does. Triumph in the face of adversity with your friend at your side. In the Black Stallion, the horse was the kid's best friend.

  • Easily the best film EVER....

  • freedom is the greatest value in life, without it life just has no meaning.

  • Wonderful, just...sublime

  • Easily the best film of the 90's!!

  • Had to post again :P The ending is just so wonderful. I feel so uplifted after watching it....tearing up now. But it's always happy tears!

  • This movie is one of very few that has affected me and how I view life. I mean if a movie can do that then you're onto a winner I think. The moment Red and Andy reunite is beautiful. How can anyone not get emotional at it?

  • "i hope." start the waterworks...

  • 0:50 Red's arm is standing outside the window, but when we see the long shot of the bus driving, his arm is not there anymore.

  • @Gencturk92

So? He put his arm back in :P

  • @FunnyMsFace all the windows on the bus were open but at the end we see it closed

  • @Gencturk92

    Ah i see :)

  • This film is truly a work of art, I first watched this when I was young, and was blown away then, beautiful

  • the most beautiful scene ever.

  • Allen Greene is one lucky guy

  • My favourite movie of all time!

  • Hope is a good thing...maybe the best of things..and good things never die!

  • Brilliantly written, brilliantly performed. A true masterpiece.

  • The most satisfying, and heartwarming movie ending in HISTORY!! Just my opinion.

  • :(

  • :(

  • get busy living, or get busy dying....

  • I love that this scene was actually filmed in St. Croix, USVI, where I'm from. Makes me proud to have been raised there!

  • " i hope !!! "

  • Hands down the greatest movie of all time.

  • One of the best films I have ever seen. WATCH THIS NOW

  • This is the best film of all time....nothing comes close to this it's a complete masterpiece 100/10

  • @4EVERSAVED1 You can't give 100/10 retard. If it's out of 10, then you have to pick a natural number between 0 and 10.

  • @Matthew2400 If you don't appreciate or understand the sarcastic rating of 100/10 for this movie then you take things way to seriously in life.Relax a little,go have a beer, maybe see a shrink or something.I'll ignore the retard comment....maybe watch this movie again and learn the meaning of how to treat and talk to people.....be careful you might end up like Bogs.... I hope you have a great new year!

  • it's the acting + the chemistry + the soundtrack. i read somewhere that this is the first scene they shot. u can clearly see the chemistry. i dunno whether freeman and robbins are friends in real life, but they should be.

  • 14 people would rather get busy dying!

  • Man I love the ending to this movie but I wish they just showed a little more when Andy and Red reunited at the end.

  • @rfa2068 You sure? Personally I think what they showed was the perfect amount. It is actually the best ending to any film I've ever seen. The entire film builds so slowly that you don't realise it's utter greatness until the final act. It's majestically done.

  • @Eradicus Oh I totally agree with you. I say that because their friendship became so strong and special through the years at Shawshank that I wanted just a little more at the end. The ending is brilliant and maybe I'm just being selfish.

  • @rfa2068 Less is more. You extend the ending and then it opens up other context. The ending was absolutely perfect, or brilliant as you and many others have put it.

  • @jrssjdca Actually, the ending from the book was shorter than this when the bus kept going.

  • I have the audio for this scene on my phone, i always listen to it when im at the beach watching the ocean

  • how the hell can ANYBODY dislike this ending?! what the hell is wrong with those 14 people...

  • Love that ending. One of my favorites. All about friendship and loyalty and love. Never get tired watching it. Friends are the most important ingredient in this recipe of life. True friendship is like sound health; the value of it is seldom known until it be lost.

Very beautiful. Kudos to all concerned

  • This Movie could´nt get a Oscar .....cos its out of this world....brilliance

  • Could be the best movie ever, cried alot even tough im a big man!

  • The ending to this brillaint film makes me cry tears of joy, and im not afraid to admit it.

  • It should have been a dream of Tim Robbins and as he was getting on a boat, he comes back to the reality of him in the middle of a forced assfuck/blowjob by The Sisters. The whole thing was an escape in his mind to deal with looking forward to a couple of lifetimes worth of rape.

I love "Owl Creek", "Brazil" style dream twist endings.

  • I understand that nobody cares about this comment or any other comment whatsoever, but if any of the creators of this film would ever by accident read this one, they might be glad to read the following: "S R" has an impact on a human mind like no film out there. "S R" made me appreciate life as a free man, a man living beyond the building with bars, cells and guards. Thanks to the creators of this film for making at least one human life so much better. This film is heaven on earth for me.

  • @NoyabrNovember I love this movie as well. I recommend you read the Stephen King's book this film was based on. It's call Different Seasons.

  • @NoyabrNovember that has got to be the BEST statement i have EVER seen in my entire LIFE...i wish Hollywood could make movies like this one but it will probably never happen

  • I love his voice,it's the same in An unfinished life, awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • It's the kind of excitement only a Morgan Freeman can feel

  • a scene that makes grown men cry.

  • @youliveyoudie And they're not afraid to admit it. Even "tough" guys state that they get emotional.

  • 14 people are getting busy dying.

  • This is the greatest movie!!! I met my fiance askin him whats ure fav movie, he said this. I was like k im yours.

  • this is the greatest movie EVER...what movie can beat this and btw oscars mean absolute shit...FACT

  • 14 people can suck my balls

  • Always makes me cry

  • i hope i can make it cross the border....

i hope to see my friend and shake his hand....

i hope the pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams....

    i hope.....

    completely destroyed me :(

  • Hope is a very good thing... Please, always remember it!

  • undoubtedly: Bet Picture ever produced :)

  • Nearly in tears, just brilliant.

  • @bondservant4Him Not even clever or witty. Just bad.

  • @Dougaloon you can tell he's a family guy fan-just saying.

  • @bondservant4Him i think your a fucking faggot..not funny grow up...

  • 840

  • Any one who says King is a hack, is crazy! What a wonderful story. What a WELL WRITTEN story!

  • Shedding manly tears...

  • im getting a tattoo on my back saying get busy living or get busy dying...

  • I read the novella of this before I saw the film. And I can honestly say it's the only time I have watched a film that far eclipses the original story. An utterly wonderful film, brilliant cast, brilliant soundtraclk. Just outstanding.

  • When the music comes in, the tears come out

  • my motto has become " I hope." since I watched this great movie!!

  • I want that piece of wood at 0:20

  • I thought the movie should have ended 1 minute earlier, with the bus rolling into the distance. I think that final minute was added at the studio's insistence.

  • @lbg77 The consensus of people posting here suggests that the decision to add the reunion was the far better one.

  • @lbg77 Are you kidding me?? Thats my favorite part of the entire movie. I love that shot of Andy on the boat

  • @lbg77 The story itself ends there with Red saying "I hope", but we never know if he ever met up with Andy. I like this version too as we know they reunited :D

  • I forreal can't believe it was written by Stephen King I thought he only did horror stuff but this is an amazing story

  • @Staciegwen Certainly was an amazing story ...wish more movies were made like this !

  • @Staciegwen He also did Stand by Me.

  • What beautiful movie! This summer I watched it on TV ! Great story, the final is so epic and beautiful, that I really wanna cry:D

  • The Warden hit the dislike button 13 times

  • A friend of mine actually refused to believe this was written by Stephen King. I had to actually show him the novel.

  • Best Movie Ever. Ever!

  • 13 people must still be in prison. Seriously , how could ANYONE hit dislike on this?

  • This final was so beautifull

  • This would have to be the best/happiest ending to a film ever

  • I never fail to cry watching this ending, no matter how many times I've seen it...

    And I'm a bloke.

  • It's too bad this vid won't show the credits!!!!

  • what a fucking beautiful ending

  • I thought the town was the best ending to a movie but this one certainly tied it

  • @Nuchieboy20132 yeah man they almost have the same sort of ending Redd gets the letter from Andy and then they meet up on the beach and in The Town Claire gets the letter from Doug and well Claire doesnt meet Doug in the end but he does say "I know I'll see you again this side or the other"

  • Why can't Hollywood make movies like this one anymore...whoever doesn't think The Shawshank Redemption is the greatest movie ever well either they didn't watch it or they don't like movies...

  • One of the most inspiring and beautifully crafted endings in cinematic history

  • @raisedonaradio couldn't agree more

  • @raisedonaradio i wanna like this one million times but i can only like it once and this movie is the BEST nothing will ever come close to it and that is a fact

  • @raisedonaradio No...it's 'THE' greatest ending in cinematic history!:))

  • Get busy livin or get busy dyin.....Thats god damn right.

  • The Shawshank tree just got split in half by a wicked storm today! Now, these peculiar fans that go looking for it will have to chase something else down from the film. Maybe they can go visit the actual place where "The Sisters" raped Tim Robbins? OOOohhh! Ahhhh!

  • beautiful

  • @RebelGuy10100 Allen Greene was Frank Darabont's good friend. He died from AIDS complications shortly before the movie was released. This movie is unbelievably good

  • possibly the greatest ending ever

  • What's better? James Earl Jones' Darth Vader voice or Freemans narration of this film? And let's say, uh..... Just Empire Strikes Back. Vader had the best lines in the film. So that vs. Freeman in this movie. Bonus question: Who do you think has the bigger, you know, color purple, what you sing twinkle twinkle little star with, etc. You know what I'm talking about....

  • @essie311 Toss-up.

  • Will there ever be a more dominating voice in movie narration than Morgan Freeman?

  • im getting "get busy living or get busy dying? tattooed on me

    i love that line

  • @coopisgod13

    Cool !

I personally like the tagline 'Fear can hold you prisioner. Hope can set you free'.

But maybe it's too long for a tattoo :-)

  • I HOPE that a masterpiece like that will soon be written once again. I feel so lucky i have watched this movie. Pure awesomeness.

  • where was Red walking from in the end?

  • @JSSTyqer haha you don't miss much do ya..

  • Hope What is hope a dream of a fool knows no better A thought which has manifested itself Maybe hope a successful person who never gave up Hope is inside all of us It is the reason we wake sleep laugh cry It is all our reasons for living and trying We cannot live life without this simple word Hope is the holy grail of humans we cannot touch Only feel like a vessel in our veins Never to be tamed or lead by reins Free spirits will always be I am today because I hope against hope
  • What a great lesson and movie im going to dislike it though, just to contradict all the people who have to rant on and on about the people who disliked this scene and how they have lost hope...just focus on the important life lesson this has to offer you and look past what everyone else thinks.

  • at 0:31 a random old guy (behind Freeman) gets caught looking at the camera.

  • @JSSTyger LOL!! at your observation skills

  • Greatest ending of any film in history......PERIOD.....

  • Makes me tear up every time. <3

  • God I love the ending! Makes me think of dying and seeing a dear friend again....

  • this movie made me of who i am today by saying that i am living the best life i can live whether it would be just accomplishing something really hard or help people live a better life... the two strong words HOPE AND FAITH... everyone always remember this people come before yourself...FACT

  • a Freeman at the start of a long journey, whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams......I hope.

  • all the government cares about is themselves watch your organs PRISONERS

  • all the government cares about is themselves

  • Perfect ending, perfect cast, perfect movie. To think they originally wanted people like Tom Hanks, Charlie Sheen (shudder), Nicolas Cage (another shudder), Tom Cruise, or Kevin Costnir -who said no to the offer and later regretted it- as Andy. Harrison Ford, Paul Newman and Robert Redford, or Clint Eastwood (of course I prefer Morgan Freeman, but Eastwood I don't know, interesting) as Red. Tommy was going to be Brad Pitt, now tell me if that would ruin a movie!

  • @bsimester2010 That would have ruined the movie

  • man i'm crying right now....

  • I always liked Cool Hand Luke ... but daiyam!

  • whos allen greene

  • When freeman says the final refrain "I hope" it puts a lump in my throat, especially when you remember what he told andy in jail, "hope can kill a man"

  • Hadley hired 13 people to dislike this video

  • @legomanic342 true that man and those people got busy dying

  • @RebelGuy10100 get busy livin, or get busy dyin

  • @ixcuincle true that man keep on living your life no matter whats in the way of it

  • 13 people just plain suck

  • on of the best movies ever morgan freeman and tim robbins give amazing performances. cant go wrong with morgan freemans narration

  • I feel like I can safely say this is my favorite end to a film of all time. "I want to go somewhere warm with no memory."

  • @Yellothar4 same here man this ending made me cry ill admit that

  • guys pause this video and mute it open a new tab and watch king kong central park.

fast forward until you reach 2:35 play that song then go back here and play this video

  • @TheWhiskeyZone omg it fits perfectly it so sad it made me cry!

  • Comment removed

  • This ending is so powerful..there is no words to describe.

  • 13 people... are just assholes

  • fuck whoever disliked this video. One of the best films ever made!

  • R.I.P. Allen Greene i have no idea who you are but im guessing you were awesome since this movie was dedicated to you...

  • @RebelGuy10100 Allen Greene was Frank Darabont's agent and a close personal friend. He died just before the completion of Shawshank Redemption due to AIDS complications.

  • @RebelGuy10100 he was a friend of Frank Darabont (The Director) who died of AIDS.

  • @TruenoandLevin86 thats terrible and this is one awesome film

  • @RebelGuy10100 He was the director's agent and close friend.

  • @RebelGuy10100 He was the directors agent and personal friend, he died of AIDs before the film was realeased

  • another thing i would like to say is it comes down to two things get busy living or get busy dying and finding HOPE to whatever lies ahead of your future...i love those 620 people and i hate those 13 people maybe someday those 13 people can learn to live and dream or maybe not oh well their loss...

  • 13 people didnt make it on the outside...FACT

  • Oh my god. Every time i see this movie, i always end up in tears. The friendship between Andy and Red really makes this phrase true,"Make new friends but keep the old, for one is silver and the other one is gold." This is my most favorite movie of all time. I always watch it whenever i feel depressed. It always gives me the pick-up i need to keep on living. Hope is a strong feeling and my only wish is that not only me but everyone to keep their hopes high and follow your dreams. :)

  • @RazeBlader18 reading that post brought a tear to my eye thank you for posting that...much love

  • @RebelGuy10100 np! follow your dreams man! god bless ya. :)

  • @RazeBlader18 yes sir all day everyday and keep it real man...one more thing i wish Hollywood made movies like this one...

  • @RebelGuy10100 I know! They hardly make movies this good anymore, but I'm sure they will make a masterpiece soon and when they do, its going to blow our minds. Just gotta keep the faith and the patience. :)

  • That moment when Red and Andy embrace and the music

kicks up is so incredibly powerful

  • 13 people have no hope.....

  • I would have to challenge anyone to find a better movie ending than this....

    Please....send them along....because you CANT!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @keithsmove true that man this is the greatest movie ever and i still to this day dont get why it didnt win one academy award god damn movie critics

  • Shawshank is without a doubt the greatest movie ever made.

For those that compare Titanic to it are missing the point.

Titanic was a real ship, true, with real people, BUT....Rose and Jack

are FICTIONAL....Cameron made them up along with the rest of the movie.

He is only guessing at what really went on at the time of the ships sinking.

Shawshank is fictional, true, but the events COULD have happened much easier than with Titanic. We can root much better with Andy and Red.

  • Best ending ever....

  • This ending gives me chills. It is just that good. The shawshank redemption is easily the best movie ever made.

  • 17maynorway is a douchebag and his opinion sucks and hopefully he will get killed in the next terrorist attack : )

  • as the whole film is about hope, and how it can set you free physically and metaphorically, this ending truly shows what hope can accomplish. i love the fact that it's just two friends rather than boy-girl, it shows how far friendship really goes. best ending ever? probably. best movie ever? probably. this defines what being human is about. perfect.

  • What a film......... WHAT A FILM.

    Taxes the superlatives.

  • 0:24 that man looks exactly like Morgan Freeman but it's not him. Anyone else confused about this? Hope someone can clear it up. One of my all time favourite films. Fantastic!

  • This movie sucks, so boring
