Hi there! You really defined the instrumental rock in the 60s. And as someone told
"I can't even begin to speak of the joy these guys have given me". It's the same feeling I got when I discovered a completely unknown band (for me) - THE ZETTLERS. Check up their versions of "Skinnie Minnie" and "Beautiful Delilah".
Totally fucking amazing because the recordings were made as early as 1965. Unbelievable!!!!!!
I can't even begin to speak of the joy these guys have given me - so many great hours grooving to those old vinyl Venture records with the cool covers and dynamic riffs inside! Outside of Jimi Hendrix, I can't imagine who else besides The Ventures has inspired so many kids to buy an electric guitar. That's truly a missing element amongst today's youth, who can inspire the MASSES with a musical instrument? I hope some do and will!
What a shame Mel Taylor didn't live to be part of this. I was going to say honor but let's face it, the RROH is bullshit. Even so, they deserve the recognition. For those wondering about Nokie playing bass on Walk Don't Run, he did so on the hit, Bob Bogel played the lead on his Jazzmaster, and Don Wilson played as ever rhythm guitar. I met all of them except Mel and they are great guys.
@YeahRightInc fogerty didnt tell the story right they met on a construction site they already had guitars the first record they made on dolphin records wasnt walk dont run
@HOC666 yea walk dont run was a hit single on dolton records later in the US if you listen to the other songs on the top twenty then it was all boring compared to the ventures
@spacepatrolman he was right when he said they heard walk dont run on a chet atkins record who simplified johnny smiths original version which was based on softly as a morning sunrise
who do they induct the bands so late ? like they started in the 60's and don't get in until now ? same with ac/dc. why are nokie playing bass when he is the lead guitarist ?
Have been listening to the Ventures since the early 60's- and now FINALLY I get to "meet" them! This was extremely interesting & worthwhile to me to be able to see more than a few old photos or a brief music video. Thank you for posting this!!!
The Ventures were the prime influence of SO many musicians of the 1960's and it's amazing and a great discredit to the R&RHOF that it took them until 2008 to do this. No offense to Gerry McGee (what happened to him, anyone know?) but the period between 1963 and 1968 while Nokie Edwards was on lead guitar was their greatest. Listen to "Ventures in Space" or "Walk Don't Run '64" or "The Fabulous Ventures" and you'll see what I mean. This was the dawn of what rock guitar was to become. Fundamental.
@49kasey What happened to Gerry McGee? He's been the Ventures lead guitar player since 1984 and has been for more years than Nokie. He plays lead on the V's annual summer tour of Japan, which is the band's big money maker. Check him out in plenty of videos on youtube, especially "Surf on Guitar 98".
Actually, Jerry joined in 1969 on an album titled "The Horse." Him and Nokie have switched back and forth for years. There have actually been tours where Bogle didn't attend while Nokie and Jerry shared the bass/lead guitar duties.
I wanna thank you for posting this:):):):) this is the first time i've ever got to see it. WOW, Nokie thanked Chet & Les for inspiration that blows me away. And Mel's son drumming in his dad's place that also blows me away. What a tribute of love to pay to your dad.
I guess I was too young to really know them fully. I heard so many of their songs yet didn't know that they did them. Wow, my mom told me I danced to the song Tequila at my brother's baptismal party....unreal. And Hawaii 5-0, I worked on that show in the 70's and never ever knew....now I know
The Ventures are my personal favourite instrumental group, along with The Shadows of Great Brittain, which I saw (for the last time, because they stopped)
in november last year (2009) in Brussels. It was 'The reunion concert', together with Cliff Richard : 50 years of music playing!
iam from srilanka, when we were small we heard those songs on radio and we loved them.very reasently i bought their dvd s and still we can be proud that we got the chance to hear good muisic those days.they are like living angels to me. thanks!dilip
Makes me want to get out my Aurora H.O. cars and track, put on my Ventures albums, just like it was '68 all over again. Thanks guys for all the great music. You still are number 1 in my book!
Nokie and Bob traded off a lot in the 60s about 17 years ago Bob got back into playing lead on songs so they got back into trading off. There are japanese videos with Bob on guitar and Gerry or Nokie on bass
These guys launched & inspired more guitar players than any rock band in history. I know! almost 50 years ago.I bought me a guitar and learned to play wearing out their first 4 albums. And Millions of future super stars cut their teeth on them.
While alot of people don't know it but anytime group plays electric guitar on stage... Their influence on is these guys.
It is a crime that it took so long .. They should have been in the first wave of inducties.
chicago isnt in the hall either they done 30 or so albums and still tour terry katz is gone RIP what are they waiting for they had a number of hits its probably politics i really dont know

Geez they are indeed a great band, but WTH such a long wait for them to get inducted,oh well John Fogerty was a good choice for a inductor, but seriously they should've won this a long time ago.
It's about time! The Ventures are not only a truly great band, but they had an incredible influence on rock music. In fact, rock wouldn't even be what it was today without them. Many young people have no idea who they are but, if they are playing guitar, they have been influenced too whether they know it or not.
Jon Fogerty is great but what's with the Southern accent, "How y'all doin?" at 0:15. He was born and raised in California. Speaking of Long overdue, why arent' the Moody Blues and Jethro Tull in the R&R HoF ?

let me tell you this place is a disgrace reason rush is not in the hall of ffame can you fucking imagine a band thats done it all please forward you complaints to the hall of fame JUST A FUCKING DISGRACE
I love this band. I got to meet them last year in Ashland, Ky. I was so thrilled to tell them that I had been a fan since I was in elementary school and listened to my dad's albums. Now I'm 41 and have a large collection of my own with 9 autographed. I'm sorry that I didn't get to meet Bob Bogle before he passed away. He will be missed. Now if I could only get my hands on their first 45 pressing!
No, they were not from Seattle. They were from Tacoma, WA! It even says so in your video. My elder brother, Jim McCurdy, was with them at the beginning as a drummer and then lost out on the chance of a lifetime by being called back into the U.S. Army in Kennedy's big call-up. I have a note to my bro signed by all the Ventures when I met them backstage at Southern Oregon College in about 1966. They remembered him fondly and wanted me to tell him they would love to see him.
i still have the original vinyl records of the ventures what a treasure i think i own to pass down to my grandson who is also 7 yrs old and loves the ventures for their hard guitar picking. I told him when i leave this earth he can have my fender tele and i hope that he wants to learn all of the ventures tunes and i know that he will, because he has rhythm in his little soul and he loves all of the old rock and roll
i got hooked on the ventures quite young too. they were probably one of the first old rock and roll bands i listened to. i borrowed my boyfriend's dad's records and got hooked on all the wonderful old music he had. i got to hear it on original vinyl, too, now that i think about it. yay!
When I was a little kid, I started listening to my Dad's Ventures records and Mel Taylor made me want to pick up a pair of drumsticks. I guess being naturally drawn to drums I picked up on his genius. Yes, they meant a lot for guitar players, but Mel Taylor was GREAT.
A propósito de John Durrill, siempre me intrigó saber por qué fue el único organista que apareció integrando el grupo; otros brindaron excelentes aportes y nunca aparecieron.
My favorite band of all time. It was GREAT to have Duane Eddy sit in with them for 2 songs on one of their albums. R I P, Mel Talyor and Bob Bogle. We already miss you...
It's a shame it took them 48 years before they were inducted, and that not all of them lived to experience it. The Ventures are truly a legend in Rock and Roll.
I have to say I wholeheartedly agree with senorspark, to omit such talented performers and creators of MUSIC in favor of such no-talent waste-of-times as The Sex Pistols isn't just laughable, it's a crime. If you look at the list of those inducted at the end of the 90's you'll see how the quality of performer just degrades. The Sex Pistols. Really, dude?
Great music-and what a show! As to their selection of songs to play- well , " you dance with the person that brought you there." "Walk..." and "Hawaii..." were two of their biggest hits, and the ones that everyone knows; if not from the radio, then from the tv show." Book 'em, Dan-o"
It is unfortunate that the R&R Hall o Fame is soooooooooo damn political b/c too many bands are left out. The Ventures should have made it long ago with many others in tow. The committee needs a serious overhaul, they need to get off their butts and put those in that deserve it. Uh, The Moody blues, Jethro Tull, Yes on and on we go.
@senorspark Van Morrrison refused to show up for his induction saying that "it's not real"! Unless the "artist" is really focusing more on the money than anything else, and kissing Jann Wenner's ass at Rolling Stone Magazine, they'll never get inducted. I'm a 50 yr old guitarist & never heard of the Ventures, but I damned sure know who Rory Gallagher was-- these idiots put Abba and Kurt Cobain on their list of greatest bands or guitarists and pass over .the real talent. What a pisser.
@senorspark I am so with you on this. I got to remembering a Venture tune Windy & Warm that a girlfriend and I wrote lyrics to. We were very young eastern WA girls and sent it off to them, but of course they only do Instrumentals. I had no idea of the induction until I saw this, but like you say it should have happened long ago.
I think they made a point of making them look like irrelevant old farts. If they had played, for example Voyage to the Stars and Penetration instead of Walk and Hawaii Five-O, but I'm sure they were doing what they were told
Felicidades The Ventures, es un logro muy merecido a una carrera musical tan sostenida y hacer valer la musica instrumental que no requiere lenguajes para ser entendida en todo el mundo. Gracias por su aportacion musical, un ejemplo a seguir...
couldn't agree more.. The Ventures is one of the most influential bands in the history of rockandroll and, get this, the beegees, mj, madona, and other POP NOT-FREAKIN-ROCK "performers" got before the, and im standing, Ventures.. im so pissed at this fu**ers.. pistols got it right, the only band (as far as i know) to refuse this "honor"
Why is Nookie back on bass? Bogle was the bassist before he got sick.

The Ventures were my introduction to Rock and Roll guitar. Real pioneers.

My favorite band of all time. It was GREAT to have Duane Eddy sit in with them for 2 songs on one of their albums. R I P, Mel Talyor and Bob Bogle. We already miss you...

1.36 "The Ventures have gone on to record over 250 albums! Good Lord, think about that: nowadays some of us would be happy to sell 250 albums." LOL

It's a shame it took them 48 years before they were inducted, and that not all of them lived to experience it. The Ventures are truly a legend in Rock and Roll.
dvtuber 2 years ago 2
How is it that The Ventures are in and NOT Dick Dale? Taking nothing away from The Ventures, but it is a sin that Dick Dale hasn't been inducted.

R.I.P. Bob Bogle guitar genius.

Really, dude?
nickbutane56 2 years ago
true, but they were more along the lines of performers less than musicians....i love punk and i like the sex pistols, but rocknroll hall of fame..no
thepandapuff 2 years ago
They may have formed on the west coast, but Edwards and Bogle are from Oklahoma. Not bad for a couple dust bowl refugees.

Uh, The Moody blues, Jethro Tull, Yes on and on we go.
senorspark 2 years ago 19

R.I.P. Bob, they almost fucked this one up and waited to long for the honors.
softshoes 2 years ago 2
