Actually, I was thinking of Yokai's comment. If I had to identify the coronation, I'd guess James II in 1686. I'm just grateful to Crazy Cello for putting this wonderful music up. Do you know whether any more of Boyce's coronation anthems have been recorded recently?
@woofulus The other music Boyce wrote for the ceremony is recorded on the same CD as this piece. He augmented his anthems by including Handel's setting of Zadok the Priest from KG2's coronation. The music he wrote for the wedding has not been recorded yet but the score has had a recent publication.
I descovered this masterpiece only last month and it's a pity because I have always loved English monarchy it's wonderful hymn it's so solemn as the other Coronation hymn"Zadok the Priest" that Ialso descovered this year Compliments both to Handel and William Boyce!!!
@YokaiTetsuiga certainly seems like george iv's reign. perhaps the worst king we've ever had. a glutton a drunk and a womaniser who the times summed up when he died. "There never was an individual less regretted by his fellow-creatures than this deceased king. What eye has wept for him? What heart has heaved one throb of unmercenary sorrow? ... If he ever had a friend — a devoted friend in any rank of life — we protest that the name of him or her never reached us.
@jerrytay The King shall rejoice in thy strength, o Lord; exceeding glad shall he be of thy salvation. Thou shalt present him with the blessings of goodness, and shalt set a crown of pure gold upon his head. His honour is great in thy salvation: glory and great worship shalt thou lay upon him. Thou shalt give him everlasting felicitie, and make him glad with the joy of thy countenance. Hallelujah. - I didn't put them in the info as it was already very long.
Is it true that this piece is actuallw written for the wedding of George III before his coronation. So this piece of music is more for a wedding ceremony rather than a coronation music.... correct?
If you read the notes I wrote for the video it explains - Boyce was commissioned to write anthems for both the Wedding and the Coronation. He wrote a verse anthem for the Wedding which included an opening symphony chorus with some of the same words as this anthem. For the Coronation he reworked it, using a lot of the same material but adding a 3rd Trumpet part and two new sections, which became this standalone full symphony anthem, in addition to the other anthems he wrote for the occasion.
Surely too much hair for George IV,(who wore no whigs and kept his hair short "Dandy" fashion) and too brown for George III(who wore white whigs). I'd say have to be George II, as would be too flashy for George I, and any earlier would be wrong artisticly in style.
Well the site I nicked it from says it's George IV, but it doesn't give a date or the artist. Considering you'd have to go back to a Stuart King to find one without a wig - and that it's too small to tell how long the hair is, I think it's fairly safe to assume it's George IV. Obviously you can't judge date from the ceremonial clothes but the decoration on the balconies and decking implies early C19 and the absence of a consort suggests George IV.
Well if it is the same picture I have seen, the king in it always looks as if he has a large whig, which if it is, is why I doubt that it is George IV.
As for the balcony decorations, I have seen coronation depictions, with the same style of balcony decoration as far back as the 17th century, so like the cermonial clothes the style probably hasn't altered much at all. As for the absence of a consort that part of ceremony, from that angle only requires the King.
Could someone tell me what the name of the CD is on which I could find this music? I have checked amazon.ca but can find nothing like it under Boyce.

George IV reigned 1820-30-- Boyce died in 1778, so the picture is the wrong one if it's him.
woofulus 3 months ago
@woofulus Yeah. I know. If you read what I said, I couldn't find one for KG3. It's a picture of a coronation with some coronation music. Problem?
