Do people from Virginia, Northeast MN, also talk like that? Cause I'm writing a book, and they move to a peninsula beside Virginia, and I was wondering if people from there also speak like this. I would love to know, cause it means I can describe it well. Replies would be great, thanks =)
Hey, I need help with comparing Minnesotan and Toronto accent s for my book. I'm not sure how to describe the differences, obviously I hear it, but I need language points to describe it.
Hi, I'm really curious about what its like to live in MO so thats why I added u, msging wasn't available. Anyway if you're up for it I'd love if you could tell me a bit what its like over there!! ;D
@crimepassionelle I'm sure you meant MN. Haha, I'm from the Duluth area, and it is very pretty there. It gets colder than a witches bosom up there in winter, but it is nice. There are trees everywhere and it is extremely green in the summer time, but the humidity can kinda take over a bit. The people are unbelievably friendly up there compared to on the west coast [where I'm at now].
@crimepassionelle haha yeah thats what I meant ;D Thanks for the info. I like winter though, but only if theres loads of snow instead of slush and dullness. You can truly appreciate the warmth inside and do loads of wintersports! But I don't know, maybe its so cold at yours that you can't even move hahah.. I'm used to around a maximum of -10 normally its around -2 *C in the winters over here. What state are you in now?
i think your video is amazing! I've seen many movie like Fargo, Drop Dead Georgous, and New In Town where the accent is from Minnesota. I am sure they probably exaggerated the accent to make the movies funny, but i honestly am amazed to see that there actually is an accent in Minnesota. I think your accent is amazing and i would never make fun. I see alot of folks making fun on here. I think the accent is AWESOME..up there with Boston and New York! You have a great attitude and love the vid!
@OMGImEllis say minnesota, water, putter, matter etc. if you're from minnesota you most likely hold the "o" sound for a longer time on certain words, and replace t's in some words with d's.
omg, i love uuuuu! this video soooo brought me back. i'm born and raised in mn but it's been years since i've been home. i was trying to explain the accent to my friend, being that i've pretty much lost mine (what a shame;)lol! and we came across your post! so awesome and exactly right on!

what's interesting is most people from the northern midwest will think that folks from Iowa, Kansas City and Wichita have "southern drawls" when THEY are the ones who actually have the most neutral midwestern accents. In fact newscasters model their speech based on those areas.
If someone from Alabama or Mississippi was told that the person they are speaking with from Kansas City has a southern drawl, they would think that's preposterous and would think they sound like a yankee
@ScottMcDona1d Same here, lol my mom (From the south) Said my dad and I have Minnesotan accent.. but I don't here it. I've lived in Northwestern MN my whole life, and I don't hear it at all...
Listen to folks from Kansas- if they sound "southern" to you then YES you have an accent. The Kansas accent is considered "midwest neutral" or the "newscasters" accent
Here in the Twin Cities region, our accent is far less obvious. As one gets away further up north, it starts to get noticeable. I think that general Midwestern accents are the least caustic, which is why they're often news anchors.
I've been to the Twin Cities many times and the accent sounded just as thick there as it does in Northern Minnesota- -it's very obvious to someone who is not from the northern Midwest
Most news anchors base their accent on the Kansas City accent which is considered the most neutrual
Walter Cronkite was the benchmark for this- he was from Kansas City and always remarked that he NEVER had to change his accent.
Hi I have a question. I have been told that the minnesota accent has it's origin from swedish immigrants who moved and settled down in Minnsota during the 19:th century. I have been trying to find confirmations of this but haven't had any luck. This seemed to be a good place to ask if it is it true?
Hi I have a question. I have been told that the minnesota accent has it's origin from swedish immigrants who moved and settled down in Minnsota during the 19:th century. I have been trying to find confirmations of this but haven't had any luck. This seemed to be a good place to ask if it is it true?
Aww you're adorable. I'm from Toronto Canada (so my accent wouldn't be considered a TRUE Canadian accent, but regardless people seem to think Minnesotans sound Canadian and I don't hear it.
your accent has a teeny tiny mix of Native American too, like when you were talking about old guys talking about a fishing trip. I'm from North Dakota, so I sound a lot like you, but I can hear a little Native American with your Minnesota accent..
My family is from Minneapolis. My sister moved to Chicago a few years ago and met her boyfriend there. He was floored by my step mom's Minnesota accent. I honestly don't even notice until I'm around people from other places. This guy just sounds like every other kid I've ever worked with. As you get outside the twin cities guys start to sound more like this. If you were cold 7 months out of the year, you'd probably sound like this too.
As he said we all have accents...personally I think most of em are hot LOL. I am originally from Kansas City and moved down south. When I go back to see my family they make fun of me hard core and it wasnt until I listened to myself on video that I realized I have acquired the "southern accent". We just dont hear our own cause we are around it night and day...but thats what gives us all variety embrace it :o)
The funny thing is that most Minnesotans will say that people from Kansas City have southern accents, yet people from the South will say that folks from Kansas City sound like a bunch of Yankees
This accent sounds a little over the top, but I guess it could be authentic. I am from Minneapolis and our accents aren't that pronounced, but they differ. My cousins sound a lot like this guy so I believe it. They're from Alexandria, MN which is not that far North, but more so than Mpls/St. Paul. It's funny because people from 'the cities' don't really call it 'the cities.' You can always tell someone who is from a smaller town. s
I love seeing other Minnesotans get offended when people say they have an accent, or seeing people leave comments like "I'm from Minnesotas and I DON'T TALK LIKE THAT!!! What you don't understand is that people in larger cities generally have a milder accent. Look at someone from a big city in the South, chances are they have a "standard" accent. I'm from a city and don't quite have a Minnesota accent, but I certainly have family members that do and I can speak MN if I want to.
Yes, but what I find even funnier is when those from Minnesota - even the Twin Cities insist that someone from say Des Moines or Kansas City has a southern accent when in reality there accent is more "Midwest Neutral"
everywhere has an accent i'm from bama and when i get around people from california everyone loves listenin to me talk they say im so country but i dont hear it..but i always get a laugh out of the way they talk too lol
Iron Range represent! I live in the cities now and this makes me homesick for the Northland. The accent really is far more pronounced - I can always tell a fellow Ranger.
Yea I'm from the cities and still do my long "o" and whatnot... My mom is from northern Minnesota so I have a thicker Minnesotan accent than my friends and they make fun of me haha
Compared to folks in North Dakota, Wisconsin, Northern South Dakota and the U.P of Michigan I guess that you don't have accents, however to the rest of the country YOU DO !
i don't know anyone who sounds like this in minnesota and im from minnesota. this sounds like my uncles from wisconsin. all the people i know with this accent r all male 30 -60 yrs. i cant think of anyone who isn't. im sure that's not true, but that's just what ive caught.
It's simply the further you are from a major city in MN, the thicker the accents get. Obviously shaniqua and rashad in North Minneapolis dont have any accent nor any of the liberal hippies or dumbass suburbanites in the metro area. The culture is all watered down in the suburbs ( i grew up in plymouth). Ya go to the state fair and everyone there thinks they're a true minnesotan just cause they go every year...not true at all
@mattowabaka If you say so. I have heard people from Duluth speak and they did have distinctive accents, but even they didn't sound like this I don't think.
Northern Minnesotan accents are probably the thickest. Trust me. I don't have as thick of an accent, but I definitely have tendencies. I'm up in Northwestern MN. I love our accent, though...And I freakin' LOVE Sven and Ole jokes. :D
He hit it on the head. I was born and raised in Minnesota, but have been gone for many years. It only takes a week back on vacation to be talking like that again. People still ask me from time to time even though most of my accent is gone, if I'm from Canada or Minnesota. I like our accents, you know? :)
This is my boyfriend...and he actually has one of the "lightest" accents from around this Northern Range area....I'm from California and moved out here so I know the "harder" from the softer Minnesota accents and believe me, his is NOTHING compared to the other Minnesota people around here!
@MsOliviaBlue I think we've met... Did you have a garage sale a few years ago? I remember you telling me you were from cali originally and moved up to the range with your man. :P I was there with my mom bsing with you about palm springs, where my moms from.
@semperserenity Probably not me...I moved out here to the range with my boyfriend here on this page in May....although I did used to work near Palm Springs....In El Centro...I'm originally from Sacramento. And I haven't had a garage sale, like ever!
Could you say "soda" in your next video?? It know, it sounds really immature, but in class today we were talking about my friend from Minnesota. I love the accent, btw. Anyway, the teacher said that up north you call pop, soda. and down south and all around, etc etc. they all say different things. Anyway, I'm from the midwest, but I used to be from the south west. BUt like I said, I love the Minnesota accent :D. Can you PLEASE say soda? It's kind of an inside joke, but still. pretty please?
@MissScary08 We say "pop" in Minnesota too. It actually seems like a lot of people call it either or around here. I know personally I call it "Pop" most of the time but I like to throw the word "Soda" in there sometimes. I'm actually from the central St. Cloudish area and this guys accent seems quite a bit thicker than mine actually. It's not nearly as bad or annoying as people make it seem. I noticed older people have thicker accents than most younger people.
Hey gideon, I like how theres a lot of people from MN saying things about the MN accent and a lot of Minnesotans saying their accent on here. I lived over 30 yrs of my life (36 now) in MN, I was born and raised there. But I was from the cities (Born in Minneapolis) and I do not talk like the people from the movie Fargo. You dont talk as bad as they do. Granted, you do talk like them a bit, but not anywhere near as bad, Hollywood made us sound like jerks kinda made me mad lol.
Ha, just watched Fargo and had to look up whether the accent was true. To an English ear your accent sounds like a crazy mix of American, Dutch, and 'West Country' English, and possibly Welsh. I mean this in the best possible way!
You're killing me with the old men talking!!!!! That is so fricken true! I'm still considered a packsacker here....even though I've lived here for the past 20 years. Sooo...I talk much like you!
Haha, you sound like my roommate freshman year! He was from southwest MN. You're right I think closer into the cities the accent isn't as strong. I definitely say then and ya know a lot though.
Oh My God, this is awesome! This is SO Minnesoooooooootan! Im from MN too and I love our accents! Im from southern MN and mine is not this strong, but its still great!!
If you make fun of our Ya you betchas and you are not Minnesotan you are bound to get your ass kicked by large Norse guys... and some women don't ya know. ;)
I'm originally from Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh. I never thought I had an accent until I moved away and now when I go back or talk to my sister I realize how much of an accent I did have. I think I've lost most of it...now I live in Rhode Island...now, you want to hear an accent...look that one up! Thanks for the video. I got a kick out of it and you are adorable. Take care...
I love how in the US there are so many and diverse accents. Well, it happens in most countries. Interesting nonetheless.

Wow nice guys do exist and by the way you're hot!!! Need to get to Minnesota

Ya go to the state fair and everyone there thinks they're a true minnesotan just cause they go every year...not true at all
APontiacof455cubes 1 year ago
It sounds like you're putting it on. No offense.
yurismir1 1 year ago
@yurismir1 No, it's legit, especially in the part of the state he's from.
mattowabaka 1 year ago

MsOliviaBlue 1 year ago
@MsOliviaBlue I think we've met... Did you have a garage sale a few years ago? I remember you telling me you were from cali originally and moved up to the range with your man. :P I was there with my mom bsing with you about palm springs, where my moms from.
semperserenity 1 year ago

MissScary08 1 year ago

Granted, you do talk like them a bit, but not anywhere near as bad, Hollywood made us sound like jerks kinda made me mad lol.
jkmommy1974 1 year ago
Ha, just watched Fargo and had to look up whether the accent was true. To an English ear your accent sounds like a crazy mix of American, Dutch, and 'West Country' English, and possibly Welsh. I mean this in the best possible way!

Haha, you sound like my roommate freshman year! He was from southwest MN. You're right I think closer into the cities the accent isn't as strong. I definitely say then and ya know a lot though.

It may be stronger than you think
If you know someone from Central Iowa or Nebraska, compare it with theirs. If they sound different, then yes you have an accent.
