She is lovely and her voice superb... I rate Her and Cecilia Bartoli as the tops at the moment. Netrebko may get there yet . She just did a short, sell out tour to South Africa, whcih I sadly missed. Bugger
it's a voice like this that makes me want to practice everyday.... i have a ways to go before my voice is back to where it was a year and a half ago..... :( damn being sick all semester when i was a freshman... I couldn't sing then i switched majors and then stopped singing... :(
I was singing in the backgroud with the choir, in this concert... Its sad, I lost my voice... but I can remember standing in front of hundrets of poeple and singing with this great artist...
I like it. It exalts the spirit. You don't get bored listening to her, like you do with some of the other singers. And I am a soprano concert singer, as well.
She holds into most of the rests and her coloratura is questionable at best. The holding into the rests obscures, if not destroys, Mozart's phrasing. The poor coloratura obscures the very essence of the melodic line. If a clarinet or flute played like this, they would be ejected.
No doubt Callas was a fine actress and extremely musical. Not having heard Callas' Armida I cannot comment specifically but every other Callas recording I own Callas' top is pushed to a bad wobble and not infrequently pushed out of the center of the pitch. Was this considered acceptable?
I have heard Fleming sing under pitch usually in an attempt to float and/or straighten the top of her range but it is the exception with her not the rule.
Normally I am not a huge fan of Ms. Fleming, but she certainly does this rather difficult work with grace and poise. Probably one of the more consistent performances of it.
Are you kidding me? There's nothing "self indulgent" about anything she sings. She is the Callas of our generation--except with a voice. Rene is a consummate aretist and I love hearing her voice singing anything--including her jazz album. She's an intelligent singer and approaches her selections gracefully and discreetly.
she does have a nice voice, but i think she overdoes it--probably what was meant by "self-indulgent"--she's so focused on technique and vocal production and the way her voice sounds that she loses touch with the music. i mean, on some of the runs here she slows down such that each note is loud and well-toned, but that's not what a run is supposed to sound like--it should be much lighter. plus, often she's actually behind the orchestra on those fast notes. i'd prefer a more musical performance.
I'm sure that Ms. Fleming is amused with all these bashings. She gets to command what she wants and she makes the money for what she does. She is an artist in all respect. People, give her a break!
Dear Sir, your answer in funny too!! I don't hesitate to believe that your level of knowledge in classic music field is exactly he same you have in good manner.
I don't agree at all. Every good love song or sacred aria is in facts both (love and sacred), joined in joy. Particularly when it's right in the lyrics ("Laudamus Te"). Here someone asked about Renée's hand moves; I think she is just in joy singing this - which is fully appropriate IMO.
Sorry, maybe there is a misunderstanding. I agree with you that sacred aria should be sing in joy. The problem is not her smile, but her "musical interpretation".
Normally insiders (as me) could find this performance far from the style requested for the music of Mozart. Donizetti, for example, is quite far from Mozart. Musicians know that very well. Apart this performance -- doubtful only for the style - I think that Renée has realised a respectable career.
All I can say is that compared to great Mozart singers of the past, such as Edith Mathis, Anna Moffo (her Laudamus Te is stunning), or Elly Ameling, this is isn't such great singing. I have trouble separating style from substance. I think her coloratura is sketchy at best (although early on she was more accurate, and she sings this - to my ears, like it was written about 40 years later. Opera is sooooo subjective. We are all correct, because opinions are never wrong.
thanks for your insightful comment. I happen to really like Fleming's Mozart in general (especially her Countess, but that's besides the point). I would totally agree with you, however, if your were talking about her baroque interpretations. Wow, she's amazing and all, but when she tries to do Handel-- it's just not right. So I understand where you're coming from, I just like my Mozart this way.
Gracias Papá Noél!!, pero te voy a pedir un favor. Podrá ser antes?, tengo que cantar algo importante para el 2 e diciembre...y el 24 será tarde...Gracias, y apurate!!!, tendrías que salir hoy mismo!!! Besos, Luisa
If you dont like classical music then leave your comment outside the youtube door. Renee Fleming is top of the bill!! Renee is one of the highest recommended soprano-voiced singers in classic music these days!! With what she is doing in this video you have to have such a vocal control which you dont learn in 1 year. This takes years of study, lessons and still more study!! If i can give you any advice, go to a vocal coach and get singingclasses your self!!
What would you consider educated? I studied voice from the age of 14 until i was 27. I sang professionally from the age of 16 until about 30. I moved to New York at 36 and auditioned for 3 opera companies including the Amato Opera (a big deal here in New York), all of whom offered me lead roles. I don't like her, either. but I am glad that you know all 99% of the educated opera community; it's so nice they have a spokesperson.
my comment had less to do with her voice, and more to do with her interpretation of mozart, which was good. the original comment said she did not interpret correctly. but, she did. her stylistic choices are fitting with the period and particularly mozart's works.
It's not a big deal nationally, but it is a big deal locally, regardless of what your opinion is. B ig deal doesn't imply big stage or big theater. It has a great reputation as a training ground for future starts, including George Shirley and Mignon Dunn. I would never say that it compares to NYCO or the Met.
I stopped studying and performing for a number of reasons. I could blame it on my nearly paralyzing stage fright. I could blame it on money. I could blame it on being lazy. All of those things are true. But.. the real reason is that I chose drugs over opera. And now I have health issues that interfere with my throat. 1/2/07 is my clean and sober anniversary (7 years), by the way.
Wow, I'm really sorry to hear that...can you sing anymore at all? If you can, it's still fulfilling to do concerts with other friends who sing. If you can sing, you should find a way to do it. I do roles in companies where I live, sometimes professional, sometimes not, but I always do my concerts, no matter what's happening. Good luck to you!
Because my stomach is paralyzed, my throat is exposed to a lot of acid due to acid reflux. Singing can be a rather painful experience, not only physically, but enotionally, because my voice is a shadow of what it once was. I still sing for myself, though. Oddly enough, I can sing better marking than full voice, so I sing alot walking down the street.
If you guys don't like to hear vibrato, portamenti, or a glissando, I guess you should hop in a time machine and blast out of here! This is 2007! Isn't there a debate about whether or not we sang this way "back then"???
I remember seeing her singing the national anthem at some sporting event on TV. You could tell she was not only shaking, but the lyrics concealed in her hand. That made me love her all the more.
I love Renee singing this. I think most sopranos tend to be too sterile with this piece. She has a warmth and an exuberance that, I think, Mozart would have appreciated. Mozart was the consumate showman and had such humor in his work. I believe Renee conveys this well, and although it may not have been her desideratum, she portrayed the true meaning of the lyrics.
This is such great rep for her..you can tell she loves singing it too...how could you not! Gee I wish she would do more and more of this stuff....she is wasted on Verdi and Puccini...Mozart, Handel, Strauss & French opera is sooo her - she knows it too!

I agree with you opinion about her technique of ornamentation.
I heard her voice with the CDs of "Armida"(Rossini). In the
absence of any good recording of the opera(ignoring Callas's
old version), Fleming's version was the best then. She could
sing quite complicated and extremely difficult parts without
difficulty. It is ten years ago.
Now she can sing standard roles and she should sing more
standard roles
