What I've observed (both with drumset private lessons and private practice on guitar), is that you're training first your mind to remember where the notes are, then your muscles for conscious muscle memory, and finally your twitch muscles (which the higher(?) parts of your brain control actively, though you aren't as aware of it. Another approach that I've taken is to first think of what you need to do, then make yourself start playing it, and slowly relax yourself into it, working it down.
@ChronoGXay Yes, the method of starting quickly and slowly working it down, decreasing tension, works sometimes for some people. I mostly don't teach that method though, because it doesn't work for everyone, and if you do it wrong you actually end up with more muscle tension/injury/effort than you need!
Really, you can come at it from two angles: first, slowly build up to speed (which drills in the pattern to your brain) and then you can push yourself slightly faster to then slow down.
@Chainsawmaniacguitar - lol I'm not talking about immediately starting fast- I guess what I was intending to say is that instead of doing a bunch of exercises to build up coordination or eliminate let alone minimize tension so that playing a melody, scale, or riff is easy, just start trying to play it at all (or even take out the smaller rhythmic values and, when you become comfortable with that watered-down version, fill-in some more of the holes. I'm doing with a double bass book right now.
Excellent advice, all of it. I'd only say using a metronome could be at the top of your list next to playing slowly. I made the mistake of not using one for years because I had very good natural timing already. When I finally shut my own ego up enough to start using a metronome, my playing not only became more rhythmic and cleaner, but my speed increased tremendously.
@TreborMarg Yeah, I've always had good natural rhythm too. The metronome just allows you to really focus in on getting everything consistent and cleaner.
@SamuelSavage777 I do have the tab to it, and it used to live on my website also...but I took it down. I will re-record the entire song at some point (as I lost the original due to computer crash) and I might re-upload the tabs then :)
@Chainsawmaniacguitar Hello, I've been playing guitar for quite a while, I just want to know is it better to practice playing guitar sitting down or standing up?
@TheEvaAngelina If you're sitting in the correct position, and have your strap set to a sensible height, then you can- in theory- practise with either. In practice, though, you're probably want to use a combination of sitting down and standing up.
hey um i watched your video and i got to say it was pretty good im only 13 years old idk if thats a old start or a good start any more advice you can give me you dont have to if you dont want to.
@Chainsawmaniacguitar well i guess try to find a way, hey i have a question what do you think i should to first when im young practice on my speed, music theory,or learing scales chords and songs, and also does lifting weight affect guitar playing in a good way or in a bad way?
Lifting weights shouldn't affect your playing at all. I do it myself sometimes. I think you should start by learning songs (because then you'll be able to put the rest of the things in context). Music is about playing songs more than anything else!
@Soldier1287 You mean the intro/outro song? It's a cover of a Baroque piece- Sarabande by Händel.
I used to have a video of it up here but it was old so I took it down. I'm sure if you search you can find the original version (played on violins and strings etc...). It does sound awesome even in the original!
@valkour22 Just because I'm sharing tips on how to speed up your playing, doesn't mean I have the insensitivity to blast through everything at 1000mph.
@Nemesiidae Facial expressions?! I'm not sure what you mean by that...
If your little finger is sticking out (away from the fretboard) when you play, it's a sure sign of tension in your hand. You need to slow things down to a point where your finger is no longer sticking out and then slowly build up speed from there.
Remember: it's not just the action you're practicing, it's also the muslces you're building up. Stronger finger muscles will mean less unneeded tension.
Yup! Ditto! My pinky finger obnoxiously waves "HELLO"!! i always knew it was an issue, but didn't realize how bad it was until I video taped it. And, no doubt this fault affects my playing. I will definitely take this advice! Thank you!
@Chainsawmaniacguitar yeah, that's true. well then luckily i have a camera!! haha, maybe ill try both out because ive been working on playing stuff without looking at the fret board as much and just listening to the sound and changing it accordingly. then i wont have to rely on sight (looking at my fretboard) and i can pay attention to myself on the spot to see what im doing wrong as i go. all i have to say is that i cant remember how i found your vids, but im glad i did!!! thanks man

Its very simple.
1). Do your scales. Various combinations, all over the fretboard.
2). Alternate Picking (use a pick)
3). Be consistent (even 15 min thrice a day is enough but be consistent)
4). Practice HARDER and tire your hand muscles EVERY DAY
5). MAKE IT FASTER
2 years down the line, you have the speed of sound. :D

@marshallvs100 The guy who used to be in In Flames? That's a compliment I guess lol
The music is my own recording or a Sarabande by Händel, it's a Baroque piece that I just think sounds awesome done on heavy guitars!

use a metronome with the facial expressions. dont go up a speed when you aren't comfortable with the facial expression

so instead of video taping, would like sitting in front of a mirror work?
jackass311 1 year ago
@jackass311 It might...but the problem with that is you have to concentrate on playing AND on watching yourself.
If you can do both, or you don't have a camera, then yes it should work well enough. Make sure you're paying attention to the mirror image, though!
