The Flyers dominated in 74-75 by bringing thuggery to new heights. When the rest of the league said "okay, if that's the way you want it" and caught on, the Flyers haven't won diddly since.
Anyone who thinks Gretzky is better than Orr should watch the first minite of this video and then answer "how long do you think Gretzky could have played with these rough-housers"? They would have plastered his ass through his mouth. Orr played and fought with the best of these real tough men and still made unbelievable plays, racking up the goals and assist while doing so.
The Flyers of the !970's were an embarrassment to hockey and the league should have acted immediately to put a stop to these goons. It took the NHL decades to recover from the Flyers brand of "hockey" in the 1970
The Flyers were much more than a "bunch of thugs" They had Bernie Parent,Rick McCliesh,Bill Barber,Reggie Leach,Bobby Clarke,Gary Dornhoffer, dude this team had some serious talent
What a disgrace. A beautiful team like the Sabres being gooned by a bunch of thugs. It wouldn't happen today. I hope the Flyers never win a Stanley Cup for more than a hundred years.
The St. Louis Blues changed the NHL into "goons", not the Flyers. The Flyers responded to St. Louis; this fact, nobody really knows, but it's true. Flyers were badly beaten down from 1967 to the very early 70's. Last straw was when a Flyer was badly suckered punched while watching his teammate go one on one with another Blue's player. The footage of THAT is a true disgrace. So, the Flyers adapted after that and evolved into the "Broad Street Bullies". Just a little history fact...
@hawkmeat What a complete, bullshit entitlement oriented statement. Responding is defending yourself. To do what Philly did is why the league took them down. Pull your head out of your ass.
@hawkmeat IT WAS TILL THE FLYERS BROUGHT GOONS OF THEIR OWN THAT STL WAS STOPPED. THE TIME BOB KELLY KILLED STEVE DURBANO AND NO ONE CAME TO HIS RESCUE.
Big sabres fan back then...Robert,Perault,Martin...wow! everytime they took the ice there was something in the air...one the best lines in hockey history right in there with Lafeur,Lemaire,Shutt-Clark,Barber,Leach-Krutov,Larionov,Mikhailov...I'm sure others here will have some suggestions...
The last piece of the stanley cup puzzle for the Flyers was getting (a much improved; thanks to Jacques Plante) Bernie Parent back the following off-season.
Yup, that looks like Dougie Favell fanning on two goals like he did to the Sabres with four seconds left to keep the Flyers out of the 1971-72 playoffs!
Wow can't believe anyone else remembers that. 'Living in P'burgh then and the game you ref'd to coupled with the Pens winning that night and with the Pens pulling the goalie and scoring to tie the Flyers the night before in Philly gave the last playoff spot to Pens. Anyway, it's great to see the old (recognizable) jerseys. It'd be awesome if the league got its head out of the ice and returned to uniforms that fans can identify with and lift their TV ratings above a zero point something.

Plus, Schultz gotta some good ass whippings too.

@hawkmeat I think you have rather simplistic understanding of the game of Hockey ...but you are entitled to your opinion.
