  • @ hpeterkawaja LOL 2:27 Monk.

  • Great composition. I feel like the melody represents Nellie, and the counter-melody is Thelonious... I like to imagine that at 0:53 and 1:50 the 9 and 3 are him and her snuggling together.

  • @alalcibiades2: totally agree. Genius has happened twice in the history of music: the era of Bach, Mozart, etc., and the era of jazz in America. Not that I don't love other music, but this music transcends everything else and will endure forever.

  • @Carthsgtr i think he means the periods of 'a long time ago' versus 'a really long time ago.' hehe

  • I began playing the trumpet when I was nine years old, so now I've been a musician for 43 years. The first time I heard this piece was the first time I ever heard Monk, and it forever changed the way I thought about music. His was an extraordinary and unique talent that ranks with Bach and Mozart on the all-time greats list...

  • Strongly suggest reading the new biography of Thelonious by R.G. Kelly. It's huge and gives you Monk and much of the jazz scene of his time.

  • a total inspiration, those chords are begging to be released!

  • I think of him as an artist using his ensemble to create these magical colors in your mind.....brilliant...one of the best

  • LOL I've listened to this particular recording at least several hundred times and it still makes me laugh hearing monk quote his own tune.
