This song spoke to me the first time I heard it, and it has never lost that intensity. Every time I hear him play it, it carries me away. There is something so ethereal about his expressions (I can barely call it music, because that is too base for his style), that to be in the room as he plays feels like you are a million light years away.
I saw him in Fort Wayne Indiana, it was amazing, he uses a loop pedal on some songs and really gets things swinging than, he's a natrual musician and show man, he just exudes music, Keep it up Michael
I also saw him play last night at beatniks....utterly blown away, the most charismatic, master of the art, to call the structure in his hands a guitar is missing the point!!
Saw him perform last night at Beatnicks Cafe in Marion, Indiana...WOW!...words can't begin to describe his mastery...have you ever heard or seen someone or something so amazing that it made you laugh? Kelsey's artistry comes from another realm.
First saw him at a bar down in the Levee at Purdue, around 1995, 96. Some nights there'd only by 5, 10 people there - and here's this guy doing all this stuff, playing his a** off. Guy is freaking awesome. I'll be a lifelong fan.
my parents used to jam with this guy in our basement all the time :) we always used to talk about how good he was and then all of a sudden he had a dvd out
i seen him live at the laffayette brewing company w/ L.D. Miller and Cole Miller, it was one of the best shows i have seen there. they are all awsome musicians, and LBC is one of the best places to see any show
He came to my high school my senior year (last year) and performed for the muse machine members. I skipped out on a huge assignment to watch him. Smartest thing I ever did! He is AMAZING live!
I saw Michael for the first time on July 14. He totally rules and is totally unique. Even when he covers something, he takes it, and makes it his own, maybe even better. The whole show was completely mind-blowing and even somewhat psychadelic. I'm gonna try to go all the shows I can!!!
This guy is from my hometown. I've seen him four times in the last year and have all four of his albums. The man is un-freaking real. The most amazing performances I've ever seen. He interacts with the audience and shapes his performance around their reaction. Each show is better than the last. I'm just like Brainstop, I see every show I can make. If he comes to town, GO SEE HIM.
Anyone who has seen Michael perform knows that he LOVES his craft and that the man is genuine in his love for music and his audience. If you have an opportunity to see him do not pass it up as it will be very well worth your while. I don't miss any of his shows if I can get to them.
you might disagree.. and i know it's really "you-tubeish" to say .. but check out andy mckee, don ross, antoine dufour, eric turnbull + prob. many i dont remember or know about.. and i think most of you will agree that it is more innovative, more technical, better compositions, + just as much "soul" as this guy.. but of course.. he's a great guitarist, but youll find that's "better"(though u cant really grade music like that).. even many posted videos of people em self playing are awsome!
I am amazed that you don't find this song to be innovative or technical. He has unbelievable skill in his playing. I know Andy and Antoine are great players as well but if you saw this guy live you would be impressed with him.
I actually agree with you there. I love it when people use looping effects etc to good effect but I find people like Andy a bit more satisfying knowing they are just playing the guitar straight from an amp
I know where youre comin from and ive seen wat ur sayin in other players but notice how much feeling this guy puts into each note hes not just purly technical
his soul in music is amazing, and even if what he does isnt technically the best, he is extremely innovative. hendrix actually wasnt technically the best, but he is remembered forever because of what he created.
I think he's one of those people you really have to see live. When people are talking about Kelsey and feeling/soul - that's where you get it. And I don't mean live via video, it's just not the same. I can't speak to his technicality (better than me is about as much as I can judge), but I know he's absolutely mesmerizing to watch live.
the thing he does at 1:42 is not a tap harmonic, it's just a tap/bend. they are quite easy to do, acoustic or electric if you know what you are doing.
There are literally tousands of players with this kind of talent,in the USA not to mention other countries. Michael just happened to be in the right place at the right time to be picked up by Windham Hill.
completely disagree. its one thing to be able to play like this, its another thing to have the ability to write songs like michael kelsey does. and are you talking about hedges? i don't think kelsey was "picked up" by windham, but i could be wrong.
Mike has his own label that he created. H-Note Records. He was mixing and producing before he started getting serious about performing his own stuff. He does all of his own stuff now.
That's why there is such a long time period between the release of each album. Something else to consider, he's a self-taught musician. So add in that knowledge and consider the passion he puts into everything he does and THAT really makes him what he is.
I used to play at his shows with him quite a bit several years ago...so I know quite a bit about him, first hand.
@ilmlin I just got in from one of his concerts with Edgar Cruz. The videos on Youtube do NOT do him justice. To watch him play and to hear the amazing acoustics in the UCO Jazz Lab.....I mean wow I was blown away. Seriously, amazing entertainer. You guys need to check out Edgar Cruz as well.
I can't believe anyone would dislike this! How disturbing...
