Heh. I found it in the book of that researcher. The soldier from 09:31 must probably served in 6th company of II./Schutzen-Regiment.14. Commander of this company was Oblt. Vitzel. This company had indeed 2 killed in that attack - Gefreiter Eden and liaison soldier (telephonist) Heese. Among other casualties in that attack was for example seriously wounded commander of 8th company Lt. Hans Hauptmann. The fighting took place near the bunker line at Stara Wies near Pless (Pszczyna)

In1939, Great Britain declared war on Germany for the invasion of Poland as they had promised..so how is it then that war was not also declared on the Soviet Union, which also invaded Poland? Germany split parts of Poland which was rightfully Russian and Kept the parts which were rightfully German. Poland came to exist after ww1. @huntercreed1 Except that's entirely wrong. Barbarossa and most other major actions of the war were formulated and planned by OKW without Hitler's interference. Essentially, Germany was fighting a war it could not win against opponents which had more resources.
@milo1047 *facepalm* milo at the beginning of the war Hitler was given a plan from his generals. The plan was to use their fallscrimjager (paratroopers) to launch a surprise attack on London. They would attack at night and drop a huge amount of men and supplies. Before England knew what was happening they would have the city. Hitler turned the plan down saying he didn't want to win a war in that way. Hitler made a lot of bad decisions that lost Germany the war. You lose, end of story.

Unless of course you refer to Seelowe (Sea Lion), which was an untenable plan written up by unenthusiastic generals who knew they hadn't the ability to cross the channel. In any case the plan never would have worked; dropping paratroops into urban terrain is asking for them to get chopped up piecemeal by the defenders. I fail to see how I've lost.
@huntercreed1 For that matter, supposing paras did manage to miraculously seize London in a surprise airdrop at night (notoriously difficult, as the Allies found out in Normandy, even with non-urban terrain), where would the be supplied from? The Germans didn't have the ability to cross the channel and keep open a line of supply, nor the airlift capability to keep an airborne pocket supplied without air supremacy, which they never got over the channel or the UK proper.
@milo1047 Sorry for not responding earlier. The plan was to take place before England had radar. The plan was to drop paratroopers during a foggy night and secure major air strips. They would then have transports that would move divisions over the channel. Hitler waited to long to take england on. His mistake was trying to take england out in the air where they had superiority. When he should have been taking them on the ground where he ruled.
@huntercreed1 Considering the UK had the Chain Home RADAR system up and running in '39 before the war even started, this plan would have had to have been implemented before the invasion of Poland to have a remote chance of succeeding. Essentially, impossible. I still have my doubts that this plan even exists. And it is impossible to defeat the UK "on land" when you have to cross the channel to get at them. Face it, Germany started a war it couldn't win.

If you ignore all the strange comments and listen to this documentary, which appears to have been produced by the BBC, you'll find this a very informative historical biography of the Wehrmact. I have been interested in WWII history for many years and find this series to be very good. As a US soldier stationed in Germany in the 80s. I find the German people completely different from the German people portrayed of WWII. Except for maybe their strong sense of communal responsibility.

The Wehrmacht is arguably the finest armed force to ever walk this planet. Not only were they tough, but they were ideologically motivated. Americans love their doctors and lawyers, but historically Germans held the soldier in the highest regard. Our modern day order of battle is derived from them.

The German military had some good tanks (greatly supplimented by brilliant commanders who knew how to use them), & the had new brilliant tactic methods (the blitzkrieg) which gave them an initial advantage. German communications & transport were severely limited. The Anglo-American alliance spanned the globe transporting whatever was needed to defeat the Axis Powers. Eisenhower said the real genius of war is logistics.

Seems strange that Britan went to war with Germany over Poland, even though Russia was involved. When the war was over Britan allowed Russia to occupy part of Poland and even sent Poles from UK home, to what they knew would be certain death at the hands of Stalin.

great series! thanks for uploading this video! many people have an obscured veiw between the wehrmacht and the SS. Most believe that they are the same "Nazi" which is not true in most cases. Of course certain divisions and soldiers of the Wehrmacht did unspeakable acts of violence, but most were just scared young men trying to stay alive and do what there country told them to do. Just like any other soldier of ww2 they should be respected for there bravery during a horrible time in history

The wehrmacht were as responsible 4 the evils of the nazis as any1 . Individual soldiers may have been naive or wotever but they were fightin 4 the nazi cause and all swore an allegiance 2 hitler. The real german heroes were those who fled nazi germany and fought against the nazis in foreign armies and those germans interned in concentration camps 4 their opposition 2 hitler.

@germaniajim ...when things were going well. When things got rough, they had the highest desertion rate of any force in the war. Only the Japanese were able to continue their strict obedience to orders when things had gone to shit...
They were our enemies, but I have a ton of respect the ones who didn't have a role in the Holocaust. They were a lot like us, just average men fighting for their country. As someone else said, they deserved a better cause.
Germany had a very strong military, germany and their allies were even stronger then the soviet union in the first 3 months of the war but that changed when the russians started put everything they had into the war effort, after operation barbarossa, Russia became the dominant military, Germany had better tactics though until after Stalingrad then it was all Russia.

Heh. I found it in the book of that researcher. The soldier from 09:31 must probably served in 6th company of II./Schutzen-Regiment.14. Commander of this company was Oblt. Vitzel. This company had indeed 2 killed in that attack - Gefreiter Eden and liaison soldier (telephonist) Heese. Among other casualties in that attack was for example seriously wounded commander of 8th company Lt. Hans Hauptmann. The fighting took place near the bunker line at Stara Wies near Pless (Pszczyna)

Germany split parts of Poland which was rightfully Russian and Kept the parts which were rightfully German. Poland came to exist after ww1. First sentence, and a major distortion of fact. 18.2 million men in the Wehrmacht THROUGHOUT 1939-45, and not all were armed, its including doctors, auxillaries, and so fourth. Not to mention the Wehrmacht is including the navy and air forces.

@huntercreed1 Except that's entirely wrong. Barbarossa and most other major actions of the war were formulated and planned by OKW without Hitler's interference. Essentially, Germany was fighting a war it could not win against opponents which had more resources.

They would attack at night and drop a huge amount of men and supplies. Before England knew what was happening they would have the city. Hitler turned the plan down saying he didn't want to win a war in that way. Hitler made a lot of bad decisions that lost Germany the war. You lose, end of story.

Unless of course you refer to Seelowe (Sea Lion), which was an untenable plan written up by unenthusiastic generals who knew they hadn't the ability to cross the channel. In any case the plan never would have worked; dropping paratroops into urban terrain is asking for them to get chopped up piecemeal by the defenders. I fail to see how I've lost.

@huntercreed1 For that matter, supposing paras did manage to miraculously seize London in a surprise airdrop at night (notoriously difficult, as the Allies found out in Normandy, even with non-urban terrain), where would the be supplied from? The Germans didn't have the ability to cross the channel and keep open a line of supply, nor the airlift capability to keep an airborne pocket supplied without air supremacy, which they never got over the channel or the UK proper.

They would then have transports that would move divisions over the channel. Hitler waited to long to take england on. His mistake was trying to take england out in the air where they had superiority. When he should have been taking them on the ground where he ruled.

@huntercreed1 Considering the UK had the Chain Home RADAR system up and running in '39 before the war even started, this plan would have had to have been implemented before the invasion of Poland to have a remote chance of succeeding. Essentially, impossible. I still have my doubts that this plan even exists. And it is impossible to defeat the UK "on land" when you have to cross the channel to get at them. Face it, Germany started a war it couldn't win.

If you ignore all the strange comments and listen to this documentary, which appears to have been produced by the BBC, you'll find this a very informative historical biography of the Wehrmact. I have been interested in WWII history for many years and find this series to be very good. As a US soldier stationed in Germany in the 80s. I find the German people completely different from the German people portrayed of WWII. Except for maybe their strong sense of communal responsibility.

The German military had some good tanks (greatly supplimented by brilliant commanders who knew how to use them), & the had new brilliant tactic methods (the blitzkrieg) which gave them an initial advantage. German communications & transport were severely limited. The Anglo-American alliance spanned the globe transporting whatever was needed to defeat the Axis Powers. Eisenhower said the real genius of war is logistics.

Of course certain divisions and soldiers of the Wehrmacht did unspeakable acts of violence, but most were just scared young men trying to stay alive and do what there country told them to do. im a Slovak, and I think that that if USA would have stayed out of the European war that had nothing to do with then... then Germany would have crushed the Soviets &oligarchy in UK . then after a couple decades after Hitler had died, Germany would return democracy &the world would now be a far safer peaceful place...because USA would have never been propelled into the height of dominance which it now occupies, and the USA would not have constructed militaristic dictatorships all over the world

The wehrmacht were as responsible 4 the evils of the nazis as any1 . Individual soldiers may have been naive or wotever but they were fightin 4 the nazi cause and all swore an allegiance 2 hitler. The real german heroes were those who fled nazi germany and fought against the nazis in foreign armies and those germans interned in concentration camps 4 their opposition 2 hitler.

the supreme irony is that the world war began over poland and in the end poland was not freed at all but given to russia who partnered with germany and invaded poland too. so much for allies fair play. allies suppose to help germans fight communism to avoid the cold war and really free poland.

the Wehrmacht would be equivalent to the US Army in that most of these men were just soldiers.Most of these men didnt involve themselves in Naziism. They were just foot soldiers. Officers were more into the Nazi party because the higher the rank, the more they had to deal with Jodl, Keitel, Von Runstedt, and even Hitler. Most of the enlisted and junior officers were just taking and following orders.

Also, does anyone find it ironic that the biggest empire in the world, the British? Are going around and lecturing others about "man of peace" and starting wars and partaking in atrocities? When the BRITISH were ruthless, especially in countries like India and in southern Africa? It's a fucking joke, WW2 never had to be fought. Hitler offered peace many times. Britain declined because they were JEALOUS of Germany, and didn't want Germany to become strong. To become an empire.

@WTCTribute Excuse me, but WW2 would have been fought regardless as to whether or not Britain surrendered. Hitler had a strange liking for the British and that is the only reason that he sued for peace, because of an unexplainable liking for the English that is as unexplainable as his vehement hatred for the Jews. The British were ruthless, but so were the Americans, and the Russians, and the Japanese. There is good and bad in every crowd. And England wasn't jealous, they were scared shitless!!!

They were our enemies, but I have a ton of respect the ones who didn't have a role in the Holocaust. They were a lot like us, just average men fighting for their country. As someone else said, they deserved a better cause.

Germany had a very strong military, germany and their allies were even stronger then the soviet union in the first 3 months of the war but that changed when the russians started put everything they had into the war effort, after operation barbarossa, Russia became the dominant military, Germany had better tactics though until after Stalingrad then it was all Russia.

Not a Hitler fan, not a Nazi fan, but i do wish the Wehrmacht had defeated the Soviets.
I would much rather trust a jew than a soviet. in fact, they should have put German jews in charge of running the concentration camps to execute soviets.
Germany probably could have got support from the Allies if it was a war of Germany vs the USSR.
