New World Radio's Washington, D.C. and Philadelphia used to have this tune as part of its flash introductions on its websites! Also, the Islamic Voice of Revolution in Iraq, a clandestine radio station, used this tune as its theme music. You know, I can almost find myself singing the theme:
"His best-known works include his New World Symphony, the Slavonic Dances, "American" String Quartet, the opera Rusalka, Cello Concerto in B minor and choral works Stabat Mater, Requiem, Op. 89 and Te Deum."
Everyone hates on N. Korea and thats not a bad thing but really, its not the citizens fault at all. It is the gov't, but who brought communism there? the Chinese. who brough communism to china? Mao, who studied in Russia. Who brought it to Russia? Lenin. Who brought it from Germany, where Karl Marx and F. Engels thought of it. Why did they think of communism? Because of the European royalty living like kings (no pun) and mistreating citizens.
@HeartGoldMVP I'm not communist, but I think that kind of political system isn't fundamentally bad. The idea is good.
Unfortunately, European and American People are afraid of Communism because it seems that it can't exist without dictature: that's the main problem. Maybe it's true, maybe it's false.
In any case, current communist chief aren't very efficient to help their populations (it's an euphemism...)
@Protheeus Indeed, capitalism offers motivation while sacrificing equality, communism does the exact opposite. If everyone can be self-motivated saints, which we are not, communism can be the key to an utopia society.
@quizzisation Absolutely agree with you. What a shame (and a pitty) that a race like ours, who has abilities to stand back, proves to be so irresponsible during its whole history.
And I don't think this situation will improve a lot...
@HeartGoldMVP So, I suppose it's the old European royalty from the 19th century that's responsible for the poverty and autocracy that is North Korea and Cuba and that was China and the Soviet Union.
This is North Korea, of course the audience seems rather apathetic and even suspicious; they're not used to this kind of music. The State has isolated its people to the extent of making these great performances we take for granted as something alien to their world. They have to catch up with so much that it will take generations for them to accomplish what we have today. Maazel is great here and the orchestra phenomenal.
@mbubuulele well my region orchestra did it a tiny bit faster you should check out....... i seem so much like a nerd but its region 11 tmea 2009 on youtube
Such an ambitious tempo! I like it! The fact that such a fast marking is not very often used, particularly in the opening, makes this a great recording. God Bless the NY Phil!
@jellyfishtothemax what do want them to do? throw up a "shocker" hand gesture while playing? stand on their chairs? it's on the inside and all going through their instruments.
@jellyfishtothemax If you smile or feel happy in North Korea, you're sent to a work camp for the rest of their life. The Phil is just respecting local customs and laws.
Every composer in history has imitated another, thus why so many composers are accused of borrowing something from another...which they do and turn it into something new of their own.
The part I've seen has (basically) dotted half notes but the timpanist here plays dotted quarters. It sounds really cool, I've just never heard it that way.
