I've played this game before, and your ally doesn't gain any EXP in fights. Strange, but considering how often allies come and go, its all balances out pretty well.

Plus, allies actually get stronger in a hidden way. Every time you level up, they take less damage from the monsters' attacks

Dude wtf, lvl 30 main character? Hell when I beat the game my guy was lvl 32 lol.

The good point? I've been playing RPGs all my life and after being exposed to Final Fantasy I've always held that battles should never be purely turn-based.

How'd you do it? I'm sorry to say, but I seriously had trouble when I fought the Hydra boss when I was younger...Also the music in the Lava Dome rocks.

I kept using the explosives and the white spell. The white spell works really well on him. Also, I agree with you on the lava dome music.

I just noticed...although not an official FF game, this game uses the names "Fire", "Blizzard", and "Thunder". Amazing! And I thought FFVIII was the first English-translated game to do that!
