Originally I watched the English version, however, I wanted to hear the characters speak their mother tongue. I really loved being able to hear the Jewish characters speak Hebrew, it felt more authentic.. then the Egyptians started speaking Hebrew... *Ahem*... momemt ruined.
I really loved the opening song! The woman singing has a powerful voice!
Does "yaldi" mean "my son"? I notice it twice: once for "My good and tender son" and the other "My son, you will get this from me." And do the letters "ve" have something to do with "and"? I see them in a lot of conjunction sentences.
@mcmptn That is mostly correct. "Yaldi" means "my child" (for boys only). The letter "Vav" which sounds like "V" is applied to the beginning of a word when wishing to express conjunction, with different vowel sounds depending on the word (Ve, Va) for example: Esrim VaTesha (twenty nine), or Ish Ve'Isha (a man and a woman). The word you refer to is "Imcha", which means "your mother". It is a combination of the word "Em" (mother) and a particle denoting posession for 2nd person male "Cha".
*does so bad that I'm afraid I'll give the baby nightmares*
Beautiful song though! I love it in every language, but it's even more special in Hebrew! The lyrics are amazing, and the actress playing the mother has such a powerful, lovely voice!
im atheist, and this is too beautiful to not have on my ipod. although i don't have these beliefes, i think it is a beautiful thing that humans have the will power to base their lives on faith alone.
Is this Biblical Hebrew or modern Hebrew? If it's modern Hebrew, it might have different rules, so it might be okay, but I'm taking a biblical Hebrew class and it seems strange to me that they could stress the first syllable of le-eretz near the end of the song.
...Because that e after the L is unless I'm mistaken the transliteration for the Hebrew letter shevah which is a half vowel and is always pronounced really quickly and I'm quite sure never the stressed syllable in a word (in fact it doesn't even count as a syllable.
Anyway, I suppose it doesn't matter that much, it just struck me as odd for them to draw out a non-syllable.
@ijustcolored I took Hebrew. While I took a lot out of it, it's not cheap, and it is time consuming. I'd consider doing it on your own with the right software, etc.
Though it's biblical hebrew, I can still understand very well. If the other disney movies in hebrew are considered modern hebrew, I think I speak more of a biblical hebrew.
I personally like that they used Biblical Hebrew instead of modern, even if there are differences since languages change so much over time. Biblical Hebrew is the most authentic language they could have used for this movie, so this is very cool. P.S. Thanks for the subs and translation so I could understand it.

Pharoah wanted to drown all the hebrew babies well all the males anyway. The Hebrew Israelites were multiplying in fast numbers so the pharoah feared that one day the Israelites will join his enemies armies
First of all, they are both called "Ivrit" since they are both forms of the Hebrew language.
As it is an ancient language is has naturally developed, changed, increased and gotten easier to pronounce through the millenia. That's the difference.
Anyways, there's also something called ancient English and it is as far form contemporary English as Hebrew is...
actually, DeathGeneral, your translation is very accurate, the sound here just sucks (no offense:)).
Also, there is an official sub (I watched it in the movie theatre when i was 8, which was 12 years ago^^). It might be that no one ever uploaded it since it's obviously only sold in Israel.
It's not that hard for Israeli translators and voice actors- we all study the bible (in its original hebrew form) in school. It's kind of like using very very formal and archaic words while speaking day to day english. Remember, the dub was made for Israeli children to watch and understand.
@TanyaItkin Well, I still find it interesting. I guess I just didn't expect that to be used for a dub, ya know? Especially as I hadn't know that, heh. 'S kinda cool hearing a language as it would've been spoken thousands of years ago, too. *nod*
The Hebrew language is beautiful and touches to my very core. Maybe it's because I'm not incredibly familiar with the language that I find it so fascinating? Who knows, but this version of the song touches me deeply :)
the word "chomer", or "cheimar"- that's the modern version, actually does mean clay. "chomer" in the bible is used only in the "clay" meaning. today we use "chomer" for any kind of raw material.
chomer means clay. There are many transfers toother languages from hebrew, mostly sice jews were always travellers and scholars, and also because 2 of the major religions in the world use it for their source material.
@TanyaItkin Yeah but not us..We have the most creative language in the world so it would be strange if we borowed from another language such a casual and important word such as mud.... Maybe i was wrong it must be a coisidence clay and mud are diferent things..
Actually, Hebrew is at a disadvantage there, since it's been a dead language, only used in prayers for more then a millenium. There was a guy named Eliezer Ben- Yehuda who lived in the 1910's and "renovated" most of Hebrew into it's modern state. He made up words for "tomato" and "doll", for instance. You can look him up on wikipedia or something. Point is, he did arteficially what your language, for instance, has been doing for a very long time.
@TanyaItkin Listen my friend i never tryed to insult Hebrew by saying that don't have the basics or something like that...I understand your points and i never tryed to compare languages and civilisations...
@Jeffanos To you to and to all of your family and relatives, brother. Let us together remember first comming of our Lord and celebrate it :). Be blessed by God my brother in all your life, and merry Christmass and a happy new year to you to :)
They are speaking biblical Hebrew here, but there is not much difference, really. Modern Hebrew uses the same verbs, but many speakers have not mastered all the combination forms used in real Hebrew (of the bible). A few innovations are used to help people out in modern Hebrew. But it is all grammatically correct here.
OMG EVERYTIME I SEE THE MOTHER CRY IT MAKES ME WANNA CRY BECAUSE SHE HAD TO GIVE UP HER SON SO HE CAN SAVE EGYPT I BELIEVE MOSES WAS ANOTHER JESUS BUT HE SAVED EGYPT ONLY AND MILLIONS OF PEOPLE FROM SUFFERING AGAIN.
Somehow I feel that the Hebrew version has a greater effect on me than the English. But both sung very beautifully in both languages.

Pharoah wanted to drown all the hebrew babies well all the males anyway. The Hebrew Israelites were multiplying in fast numbers so the pharoah feared that one day the Israelites will join his enemies armies

@TheDarkJesse

הקטע בו היא אומרת שתהיה איתו לעד מתרגם בעברית לשתי משמעויות:
"עימך אהיה לעולמים"- איתך אהיה לעד.
"אימך אהיה, לעולמים"- אני תמיד אהיה אימא שלך.

actually, DeathGeneral, your translation is very accurate, the sound here just sucks (no offense:)).
Also, there is an official sub (I watched it in the movie theatre when i was 8, which was 12 years ago^^). It might be that no one ever uploaded it since it's obviously only sold in Israel.

DAYUM, they used Biblical Hebrew?! They really went all out for this dub! O_O
Still gorgeous as all heck though. <3
Caterfree10 1 year ago
@Caterfree10
It's not that hard for Israeli translators and voice actors- we all study the bible (in its original hebrew form) in school. It's kind of like using very very formal and archaic words while speaking day to day english. Remember, the dub was made for Israeli children to watch and understand.
TanyaItkin 1 year ago
@TanyaItkin Well, I still find it interesting. I guess I just didn't expect that to be used for a dub, ya know? Especially as I hadn't know that, heh. 'S kinda cool hearing a language as it would've been spoken thousands of years ago, too. *nod*
Caterfree10 1 year ago
The Hebrew language is beautiful and touches to my very core. Maybe it's because I'm not incredibly familiar with the language that I find it so fascinating? Who knows, but this version of the song touches me deeply :)

And i noticed that mud is Chomer in Hebrew. We call it Choma(Χόμα) in my language strange cause my language deosn't belong to Semitic branch....
Jeffanos 1 year ago
@Jeffanos
actually, "chomer" is 'material'. only in the movie it is related to mud, cause that is their material :)
FullySoul 1 year ago
@FullySoul Thanx man
Jeffanos 1 year ago
@FullySoul
the word "chomer", or "cheimar"- that's the modern version, actually does mean clay. "chomer" in the bible is used only in the "clay" meaning. today we use "chomer" for any kind of raw material.
TanyaItkin 1 year ago
@TanyaItkin
אתה יכול לדבר אלי בעברית.
התנ"ך כן משתמש במילה "חומר", ולא במשמעות של חימר:
"היאמר חומר ליוצרו מה תעשה"
אמנם האדם עשוי מן העפר, אך ודאי הכתוב לא התכוון שהאדם בנוי כחימר.
אלא הכוונה, שהאדם הוא חומר, ואין בו ממש.
FullySoul 1 year ago
@FullySoul
כוונתי הייתה שהמילה חימר לא מופיעה בתנ"ך (למיטב ידיעתי). אני לא מתיימרת לדעת מספיק כדי לצטט פסוקים, רציתי רק להבהיר לאנשים את הוידאו.
אני בחורה, דרך אגב.
TanyaItkin 1 year ago
@TanyaItkin זה לא חימר זה חומר והמילה חומר בהקשר הזה הופיעה בתנ"L החומר הכוונה לערבוב של הטיט החול המים והתבן

@Jeffanos
chomer means clay. There are many transfers toother languages from hebrew, mostly sice jews were always travellers and scholars, and also because 2 of the major religions in the world use it for their source material.
TanyaItkin 1 year ago
@TanyaItkin Yeah but not us..We have the most creative language in the world so it would be strange if we borowed from another language such a casual and important word such as mud.... Maybe i was wrong it must be a coisidence clay and mud are diferent things..
Jeffanos 1 year ago
@Jeffanos
TanyaItkin 1 year ago
@TanyaItkin Listen my friend i never tryed to insult Hebrew by saying that don't have the basics or something like that...I understand your points and i never tryed to compare languages and civilisations...

For those fluent in Hebrew (I can read some Hebrew and speak a bare minimum), is this ancient Hebrew they're speaking, or more modern?
BTW, I think this version is the most "appropriate," and therefore the most powerful version of this song.
MaDrEaMeR17 1 year ago
@MaDrEaMeR17

Helps that its Ofra Haza's native language (she actually sang 15 translations of the song in different languages for the dub).

@emergencyCALL911
It means "save us, please" in Hebrew.
72Yonatan 1 year ago
If you are comparing it to the Arabic word, Hussein, that would be a false cognate, because Hussein means "beautiful."
