I think you can play you own music with the most recent firmware update. Its what it said in the Podcast :)

swiffstep, Microsoft has a patent on playing your own music in a game. I know, I know, it's an obvious idea and has been done long ago, but Microsoft got a patent anyway and now competitors have to be very careful not to infringe upon it. That's why the PS3's in game music feature is not so great.

On the plus side, it is kinda unnecessary. If you have mp3s, you have a device that can play them while you play your games.

No MS does have a patent on plaqying your own music in game. The PS3 cannot handle this operation, so each game has to independently have this feature, which taxes higher performance games like MGS4 too much to be worthwhile.

Microsoft is a lame company most of the time. The 360 is a good product, but it's clear that if MS ever managed to dominate this field they would do what they always do to consumers.

That's not altogether true. I remember in The Sims 2, where I could put in mp3 files in the music folder and then it would play when the sims were listening to music

The patent I am referring to covers a console level application of mp3 in game music, so the High Velocity Bowling, Wipeout, Sims 2 applications are the workaround some devs have used. This is actually precisely what I'm talking about rather than a refutation of the problem.

The guy below me is wrong there was an update today but its just one of those stability updates, the ingame XMB will be included in the 2.40 update.
