  • nice tutorial, thanks!

  • man thanks i gota try this. meann!!

  • hey man how do you get the keyboard on screen ? what's the shortcut ?

  • @AzokWvn capslock

  • very informative, man. many many thanks!

  • ummm... that's not sampling. it's already sampled if it's already been recorded and digitized. Sampling IS digitizing from the analogue environment. Just saying...

  • THANK YOU

  • This was helpful!! Thx bro!!

    -Jon Lucas

  • how does the keyboard thing show up?

  • @dwaynesLIFE press CAPS LOCK BUTTON

  • I GET LOADS OF DISTORTION ON MINE WHEN I DO THIS

  • that song is in 5/4

  • when you assign a sample to the keyboard..do you have to hold down each key for the duration of the sample, or can you hit once and hear the full sample. For example, if I cut up my samples into sections of 4 measures, and assigned it to C, would all four bars play with one stroke of Key C, or would I have to hold down C for the entire 4 bars?

  • i dont have convert to new sampler track either and i have an up to date logic? what do i do? i cuould use some help

  • "convert to new sampler track" is not an option when i right click. wat do i do?

  • @DGBEATTV go the "convert" part in the drop down it should be there

  • What about tempo, speding up and slowing down. While sampeling

  • Great thanks!!

  • What do I do since I cant right click on my macbook?

  • Fantastic VIDEO!thanks :D

  • the backslash doesnt work for chopping in express.......real lame

  • @pittsburghpiff PLEASE NOTE: If you are running Logic 9, this is not a default key command. To modify the key command follow these steps:

    1. Go to PREFERENCES > KEY COMMANDS.

    2. Type split in the search area.

    3. Select Split Regions/Events by playhead position.

    4. Select Learn by Key Label.

    5. Hit the / key.

    6. De-select Learn by key label and close the key command menu.

After these simple steps, you should be good to start chopping!

  • @dyc1000 Actually the default preset for Key Commands is for a keyboard with a numeric pad...you have to use the \ on the num pad. BUT, you can change the preset to a plain US Keyboard, and it will have the \ loaded in, plus some other handy modifications. It's under Options > Presets > US in the Key Command menu (option - K)

  • how do i click right button if its only one ?

    MAC

  • Its not working for my akai keyboard.. how woul di fix this?

  • Thanks so much for this man, you've made it really simple to grasp. Just one question though, how do you get the samples to loop?

  • thanks bro, showing various ways of doing this.. big up!

  • how do i record now without the original track in the background

  • @kbouland2 to mute the original track: press mute on the audio channel or you can select the original audio file's region and press m on you keyboard to mute out the original track you sampled from.

  • thank you

  • does this only work with logic pro?

  • @sanchez63636 it works for both express and pro as far as I know. you may want to look at my other video for chopping samples in logic express 8, if this method doesn' t work for you.

  • the best chop tutorial i have seen!

  • so helpful thank for the tuto

  • i never have problems sampling from the loops in the library because it seems like it places it it easy..how do it sync & out side loop??? thats the hardest thing for me to figure out

  • you are great, thanks.

  • @bcindahouse1 big up yourself! I will be trying this when I get in

  • can you do this in express?

  • I WANT TO GIVE U A HUG! i have been tryin do that mono/1shot thing forever! big up safe safe!!!

  • What button does he use to manuel chop?

  • I cant get the "convert sampler to new sampler track" to come up when right clicked. I also cannot select the EXS24. Cant find either of these anywhere, HELP!

  • @thelukewarm420 right click then go > Convert > Convert to New Sampler Track. The EXS24 should pop up by then...

  • I cant get the "convert sampler to new sampler track" to come up when right clicked. I also cannot select the EXS24. Cant find either of these anywhere, HELP!

  • @thelukewarm420 it's under audio in the arrange window, i had the same problem.

  • how do you sample something else? like an instrumental you have and it's not in apple loops..

  • Every time I convert to new sampler track every note I play is the same region playing over and over again...

  • @freekwit2es when that happens try selecting your regions again, then convert to a sampler track again. Usually works second time.

  • this is real good it helped alot

  • What button for the scissors tool?

  • FOLLOW-UP TO MY PREVIOUS POST: OK, i figured out how to get the sample to work on the Logic CAPSLOCK keyboard, but how can i get the sounds to play on my actual plugged in keyboard?

  • I just did exactly what you said and it worked fine until i after i converted to sample track --> regions. i pressed on my external keyboard and no sounds of the sample i made play. i tried the "capslock logic keyboard" as well and none of the samples played, the only way i was able to hear the chopped sound was by clicking on the little piano keys down by where the red line is? what am i doing wrong?

p.s. i tested out the keyboard on a logic instrument (the organ for example) and it worked.

  • @outsp0k3nmime Hey i'm having the same problem how did you solve it?

  • words cannot explain how great this tutorial is. definately subscribing

  • I really enjoy the way this guy explains things. OG KUSH and this video is making my logic 9 experience 4 thousand times better

    thx

  • THIS VIDEO WAS SENT FROM THE GODS THANK YOU

  • appreciate it man, thanks for taking the time to do this, it helped alot

  • hey thanks a lot for this vid, helped a lot. i have some trouble however, when i import from my music library, i have about a 10 percent success rate. the tracks either just dont transfer to midi or the notes come through CLIPPING hard. its a huge bummer. any thoughts from the people?

  • Thanks, this tutorial is awesome.

  • how do you extract vocals from a sample track if u just wanna sample the vocals in your track?

  • what button did you press to get the keyboard display to pop up in the screen?

  • @srv2be88 capslock

  • thanks man very clear and helpfull

  • Thanks man!!! Good Lookin'!!!!

  • Yo how can i adjust the tempo of the sample 2 match up w/ the project??

  • this was VERY helpful!

  • thanks man. that just helped me cut up some multitracks from an old cubase project. Peace

  • yo i cant right click? my mouse is jus the regular mac mouse so i cant get the convert to transient file thing to pop up. Is there another way to do this? thanks

  • THANK YOU !

  • Disregard the last question but when u sample in transient method there are only certain sounds from the song captured. Is there a way to pull up the other sounds and assign them 2 keys?

  • I am a beginner to Logic Pro I am very interested in this software because I see that it is powerful and ver user friendly. But the problem I am having is chopping up my samples.I want everybody to know that the US preset setting does allow you to use forward slash to chop samples. My problem now is I can drag the music into my logic pro but I can't hear it at all.I have never been able to hear nothing that I drag into logic.PLEASE HELP!

  • Using the transient method, once the song has been broken down & assigned to keys how do I record what I am playing without the original song playing also? When I mute the original song there are no sounds on the keys.

  • Man, u just changed the game 4 me. Thanx a million. Luv

  • thanks ur tutorial is very helpful. do u know if there is a way to save the new samples so that i can load them in ultrabeat?

  • My question is: How do you sample a song from itunes?

  • @ThaPhenomKid just go to the itunes file in your browser and pick the song you want to sample and drag it into your arrangement page. You can't sample protected files because of security encryption. most itunes songs downloaded before 2009 have been encrypted to prevent pirating but most songs after downloaded 2008 aren't encrypted. so you should be fine chopping them up.

  • You explained EVERYTHING!!! Hands down, the DEFINITIVE instructional video on youtube. Thank you SIR!

  • @okturus thank you appreciate it

  • I wonder why people would choose mpc sampling over this? The only thing I can imagine is the hardware feel you get with an mpc. In my opinion sampling in logic is way more practical! thanks for the vid

  • Can i sample my own mp3 files???

  • @eliezerb1 you can sample yourself but you may have to bounce your mp3 files into a .wav file to playback in the exs24. If I remember correctly the exs24 won't read mp3 files. logic does tho

  • @eliezerb1 Dragging an mp3 file from the browser into the arrange window automatically creates an aif file (a file size around 5 times larger) of your mp3 file (which won't get deleted). this aif can then be sampled and bounced to a wav or whatever your intentions are

  • i know this sounds crazy how can you time strerech the real time chopped sample?

  • @blasian757beats please check out my other tutorials. I'm sure I addressed time streching in one of those tutorials.

  • PLEASE NOTE: If you are running Logic 9, this is not a default key command. To modify the key command follow these steps:

    1. Go to PREFERENCES > KEY COMMANDS.

    2. Type split in the search area.

    3. Select Split Regions/Events by playhead position.

    5. Hit the / key.

    6. De-select Learn by key label and close the key command menu.

  • @dyc1000 thiissss isnt working........wnever i right click it just goes to the sample editor

  • @MrArmen1157 make sure you have the audio file you are going to sample from highlighted then right click and it should be the same way that I explained in my video. if that doesn't help, i can only think it may be a bug. I would check out my other tuts, maybe they may help. thanks. please sub

  • @dyc1000 when i right click the convert to sampler doesnt come up on tht list n i did wht u said wit the key commands

  • @MrArmen1157 on mine it is right click>convert (7th option from bottom) > convert to new sampler track. hope this helps

  • i dont have the sampler track

  • this is good but how do you set the audio file to the tempo of the project your working in?

  • dude best logic vid ive seen thank you

  • GOOD STUFF MY G.

  • GOOD STUFF MY G

  • Thanks for sharing the knowledge. Much appreciated!

  • Thank you kindly.

  • Is there a way to assign the same sample over a region to play it like an instrument? I'd want it to change in pitch. For example: original sample on C2. Have it sound a bit higher at D2, etc...

  • @pwmusic Hear Hear - Thank you for your work! I have learnt more about sampling in this with you in one night than hell knows how long. Keep up the good work!

  • change the keyrange to the key you want to trigger the samples, from ? to ? count the number of chopped samples to match the key ranges

  • I don't have a right click mouse, how do I get to that page?

  • This is a good tutorial. Similar to the just blaze method but his took longer. What I've found over my course of sampling various things, is a lot of beats (especially motown) are very humanized and vary in tempo at specific portions of the track, so you've got to tweek the sample divisons. very dope vid though.

  • Thank you for this.

  • i cant get the 1shot to work. Any advice?

  • @cheezyChrons in your sampler editor, under the header playback, make sure the only clicked box is one-shot. Make sure the loop box and reverse box are unchecked. this should allow one-shot to work.

  • yeah thats all correct, but you have to lock the region to a tempo doing it via "your easy way"

  • Hey,

I did what you said on the video but when the exs24 track has created i can't play with the sample neither on my keyboard nor on the capslock keyboard. I would apprecciate if you could help me

    Thanks

  • @csuti look at the note your sample is assigned to on the sample editor. hit the keys or keyboard while the sample editor is up and look at which key is triggered when you hit them. the block above the keys are your sample. you want to trigger the key that has the sample above it. also make sure you don't have the channel strip on surround sound. they look like five dots and will say surround right under the exs24 sampler name. for some reason logic doesn't sound in the exs24 in surround sound.

  • Hey, how do you get that midi keyboard control to pop up?

  • hit the capslock key to make the keyboard pop up. make sure you hit the number 1 to set it at the correct octave or you won't get any sound if your samples start a c1@nenakkuallrac

  • @dyc1000 Thanks, that's helpful! Since you possess knowledge that I don't... do you know how to load samples into the ultrabeat sequencer?

  • Hey, how do you get that midi keyboard control to pop up?

  • @nenakkuallrac you have to push the caps key

  • how would i match the tempo of a sample to my beat?

  • dope vid . I have a akai mpd 18 and wanted to map my sample over the pads. how would I? any advice much appreciated

  • @jahliv9 Its easy. The samples are arranged from the far left corner all the way up to the top left corner. the 1st sample will be assigned to c1 as it defaults on the EXS24 sampler editor.

  • how do u do this wit a regular song and take the music out of the background

  • Good Tutorial. Thanks to you I just found a easy way to chop a sample.

  • i have a casio keyboard hooked up with a usb how come when i press the keys it does not trigger the samples?

  • @ThatsAGoodVideo read your manual and look for midi hook up. you might have to change your keyboard to usb to midi. If your keyboard is already working to trigger other instruments, make sure you are hitting the right keys.

  • THANK YOU very much. great tutorial very clear. really.

made my first slice thanks to you!

  • When I press the slash button nothing happens.

    Whats wrong?

  • @GILANI check out my other videos. i explain how to assign the slash to split regions.

  • when I press / nothing happens!

    what am i doing wrong?

  • seriously this was great help. I stopped the video at 1:00 in and was able to make my first track with samples. you can check it out on my page. now too watch the rest of the video lol... thanks for posting!

  • ur welcome

  • thanks dyc. I appreciate the simplicity and usefulness of your tutorial.

  • ur welcome

  • okay so, mine didnt work at all. is there a way where you can share sreens with me 2 do this?

  • @pearlplayah I don't know how to share screens but try full screen and it should help. also go to my first tutorial logic 8 made easy: Chopping n the EXS24 sampler instrument. If your buttons are not allowing you to chop samples with the keys look at my tutorial: How to set up sample chops (split regions) in logic. If you need farther assistance after those tuts send me an message or comment.

  • thx a lot for this video your the king dude

  • no doubt. ur welcome

  • Great tutorial! Hoever, I just did everything you did and it worked great, except when I hit caps lock to bring up the computer keyboard midi controls, the chopped samples won't play like yours did. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for help in advance!

  • You have to change the octave on the keyboard. you do that by pressing one of the numbers on the key board. press 1 and look where it says octave and change it to one.

  • thanks! great tutorials.

  • Good shit.

  • Great video dyc! Very helpful! Thumbs up!

  • Thanks glad to help.

  • New Logic Express 9 user here! Send help, lol! This is all new to me. I'm been a drummer for 20 years, and now want to make my own music, so I bought Logic for my new imac. Should I read through the manual? Any advice for a rookie?

    Thank you. peace 

  • play with logic and watch as many SFlogic Ninja youtube Tuts as possible. the manual is ok but I find the logic video tuts are more helpful. also check out imamusicmogul youtube page. he has free tuts as well. the best way to learn is to do. Also winksound has tons of tuts. the apple forum has logic support there as well. you can get questions answer there as well report bugs. go to support and type in logic in the search area. If you have any questions, I'll try to help as best as I can.

  • Hey,

I was wondering if anyone could answer a very basic question that I have. When sampling if i wanted to match the project tempo with the sample tempo, how would I go about doing this?

  • On the track where you load the original track in which you are sampling from. click on inserts in the instrument are and choose metering. then select bpm counter. now play the track. the bpm counter will tell the bpm in the track, which is the tempo. when you find out the bpm from the counter change the bpm for your overall project at the bottom of the screen in the display bar. the default setting for all new projects is 120.

  • Thank you for the swift reply.. I have tried this method but for some reason the BPM count is not accurate (it is reading a real slow song like Chaka Khan- through the fire at like 130 BPM) ..

My problem is that I have uploaded a track which i wish to sample and I just can not seem to find a way to get the tempo before i slice it up.... Another issue that I am having is that once i pitch up my sample it no longer fits in with the BPM count??

  • The BPM counter works good with tracks that have drum tracks with them. Most old school music like Chaka Khan and music of the 70's was not played to a grid like todays music. So the tempo of the song may be harder detect because of the human factor of drum playing. The best option for you to detect the actual sample BPM is to beat map the song. I would look at SFlogic Ninja's tutorial labeled beatamapping. Hopefully that helps you. If I find a better way to detect the BPM. I'll post a tut.

  • Also often with playing samples, It is easier to play the samples first and then lay down the drums since samples can very in length. Hopefully this helps.

  • Also check to make sure that the pitch is unclicked in the playback area of the EXS24 sampler instrument. You do this by going to the EXS24 editor by clicking edit on the EXS24 sampler. Then go to playback and unclick pitch. Pitch playback corresponds with the key on the piano roll. As the keys go up or down on the keyboard so does the tempo of the sample. You can control the overall playback of all the samples at the same pitch by using the tune button on the surface of the EXS24 sampler.

  • Also try using the Flex tool to adjust the sample to the same tempo. Winksound's youtube page offers a tut on using the flex tool in logic and many other music programs. I will try and post a tut soon. I still learning the ins and outs of using the flex tool.

  • Thank for the help guys worked a treat. I have another inquiry, Whenever I finish using logic and then go back to it at a later point to carry on with a project I receive a notice that reads (EXS24 instrument "10 feel so at home here_1" not found.). Also none of the instruments play which means the whole song is ruined. Am I doing something wrong here? I have attatched an image to the email to show the error.

  • Sometimes Logic loses samples stored in the EXS24 sampler. When I say this, the samples are still on your computer but for some reason the EXS24 sampler can not locate them. 1st try opening and closing logic a couple times maybe this will allow the EXS sampler to be reset. But as a rule of thumb for any project you work in the future: ALWAYS save your assets initially in your song's project folder. When you start a new project it gives you the option to save samples to that project folder.

  • There is also a thread on the apple forum under support for logic. I have had this problem before too. It sucks. But also try to locate your sample thru the EXS24 sampler on your hard drive or external hard drive. I'll also find the thread and try to email it to our at least point you in the right direction.

  • It's probably because your using an MP3, or a WAV. Which usually have a slither of silence at the beginning. You've got to chop that bit off, which is usually milliseconds before the song, and then the song will fit right with the projects tempo.

  • great vid, but what program do you use to record the screen on the mac?

  • screenuim, but screencast works great too.

  • thanks man, it sure helped me out :)

  • glad it could help. check out my other vids on winksound and on my channel for more tips for sampling in logic.

  • appreciate the video man youre good at teaching. it was easy to follow. im new to logic so im lookin for all resources. ill try to contact you if i get stuck so hit me bck

  • thanks. i am willing to help whenever I have time. also check out my channel and winksound for other production tips.

  • You just saved my life!

  • glad i can help. Also check out winksound for other excellent production tips. I also have other production tips on my channel if you need further help.

  • Is there a way to set that mono setting only for one key at the time? Like - I play sample on one key and it stops and starts again if I press key twice but allowing to overlay if I press another key.

  • It sounds like you want to loop. uncheck the one shot option in your exs24 sampler editor window and choose loop. as long as you have the key pressed down the sample will loop. if you want to loop a sample hands free. buy a sustaining pedal.if you want a sample to play at the same time as another you must have your exs24 set to poly, which means multiple sounds. I will post video shortly to address your problem. thanks

  • Not exactly. I want the sample break in the middle by pressing the key again. It seems that only way for my problem is to make groups for each sample and set poly to 1.

  • that sounds like the only possibility I can think of. I would suggested the same thing. you can chop the sample where you want the overlay to begin or end. you can also layer your samples by simply dragging them over one another in the editor.

  • Thanks for posting this! I learned some great tricks from your video! Nice work man!

  • you're welcome

  • hey thanks for the info was def wondering about that...will make sampling alot easier for me... kool

  • nice vid

  • thanks
