The one time in her life she lost the script, Ella loosens up her unrivalled, perfectly timbred voice, transcends herself and touches the plane of rawness of Billie and Sarah. The result: her greatest performance!
Wiki says: "Ella Fitzgerald made a famous live recording in 1960 (released on Ella in Berlin: Mack the Knife) in which, after forgetting the lyrics after the first verse, she improvised new lyrics in a performance that earned her a Grammy Award." I'm delighted to find this classic on Youtube!
she did that (pretended she forgot the verse) with every single performance around the world, even in the south of france in 1968. it was a part of her version.
Too bad talent like this is no longer appreciated. What a gift. I have loved this performance the first time I heard it decades after the fact. Something about that big band style.
it is like to DIE on stage if you have no lyrics. OMG.. i can imagine how she felt. the way she drifted the song ahead is genius. she is was and will be forever the best....... my inspiration forever
Love this track from the album 'Live in Berlin'. Brings back many memories of jazz clubs in London back in the 80's. There is a particular incident arising from this track at a nightclub that I would love to relate to you all, but unfortunately I am too much of a gentleman to disclose the details. Susan, if you are reading this. I bet you are smiling!!
Her voice is as sweet and smooth as melted chocolate <3 I love her
