always liked this one, got quite a bit of play in Bakersfield, CA on KAFY - of ocurse we always sang it--Girl with no eyeballs in her eyes(thought that, that was real funny ad a kid! LOL)
I have a surf single from 1963 on a purple Valiant Records label (distributed by Warner Bros.) called "Break Out" by a band called The Safaris, with the same writers and producers as this and "Image of A Girl". Very strange. It's a rip of "Wipe Out"--Safaris/Surfaris, and starts with a guy yelling "Break Out!" and then drums, etc.--but it's actually pretty good. Don't know anything about it.
@interestingfailure The record your refering to is called "Kickout" on thre Valient label and yes its the same group. I have spoken to Marv Rosenburg who was a member of the group and one of the writers of "Image Of a Girl" and he confirmed that they recorded the instrumental for the Valient label
@hxo20292 Did he say why they recorded a surf single? I don't get the connection--a great doo-wop group doing a surf single, or was it just the Phantoms Band?--other than the similarity of the names and maybe they thought they could get something going from that. I don't have a turntable, so I haven't played it in years, but I remember it as being pretty good, great production, etc. Seems like some money was spent on it. Did it ever do anything?
@interestingfailure This is interesting. The Valiant label does say ELDO-GALLESE Productions which is making me wonder that it may be the same group? However, I do have their "Image Of A Girl" CD also with 25 songs and "Kick Out" & "Loney Surf Guitar" is not on it. Kick Out was written by Gallese, Norton, Todd & Gunnels, Image Of A Girl was written by Clasky & Rosenburg. It does seem strange they'ed do a 2 SURF sider, unless it was just the Phantoms Band?
This was the follow-up single to "Image Of A Girl", and reached #85 on Billboard's national charts, in October 1960. That same month, it reached #18 on KFWB, Los Angeles. It got some airplay in my hometown (Baltimore), too. This song now exists on a legit CD of "follow-up" hits from England's fantastic reissue label, ACE Records.
Ringo244- it's unlikely I was studying, but I'm from the same area and never heard this. Maybe we listened to different radio stations. You're the lucky one since I had to wait decades before hearing this on You Tube
THANK YOU!! Hard song to find and is my fav by this group...looked online for over a year before comging across this! Like a previous listener said, rarely played byut did get some air time in LA!
Never spend that much time looking in this day & age. Years ago was different, I had to spend 10,20,30,40 years looking for a record. Today just ask, If I have it & I like it, I will post it for you! Until then, enjoy!
Always liked this song...didn't do much but got air play in Los Angeles....It's hard to read the label, is that "with The Phantom Band"? If so,is this the same Phantom Band that played local rock shows and included the Carlos Brothers?

This is a new one to me. I presume this is "The Image of a Girl" group. Great sound, too bad it never got airplay in the East.

Same group. They only got recognition on Image Of a girl, really sad. Everything I posted by the Safaris is the same group, check em' out.
