The Grammys barely dedicate any time to MENTION the Jazz category anymore, let alone dedicate this kind of time to showcasing its power. This year (2011-2012), to learn who the major jazz winners were, I had to go to the Academy's site online. Thank you so much for sharing this incredible performance!
I remember this not only for Marsalis's performance-- which is phenomenal-- but because this Grammy broadcast was the pinnacle of that award show, with performances from a wide variety of musical forms. It was fantastic.
Have been hoping this would be put up for years!!! This had such a huge impact on me as a young trumpeter!!!! I can remember going to school the next day and talking with my best friend about this vary performance!!!!!
I met Ellis Marsalis through a guy named Gary Edwards I new he was someone special, but I did not know how special, life is funny you don't always realize when you are in the presence of greatness, just look at who he nurtured and produced, the unbelievable
I'm glad to see this video is up. It shows how the Grammy's have changed over the years.
The band is Kenny Kirkland on piano, Charnett Moffett on bass, Jeff "Tain" Watts on drums, Branford on tenor, and Wynton on trumpet. A funny moment happens at 4:22. When Wynton tries to play, his valves were stuck. Luckily since the tune was a "cue" based tune, Branford was able to start it while Wynton had to fix his valves. Even though he kept adjusting the third valve, he never got it to work.
This is the year I was born! Awesome video. Only because of Youtube I'm able to see this cuz I was too busy being born. HEY it's MJ watching Wynton. HAHAHA.
Yeah Wynton won! Woo! It's a shame they don't show the entire Grammy's anymore.
@steven4570 They don't show this kind of stuff on tv anymore. They only telecast the "main" genres like pop, country, hip hop etc. All the other stuff is before the televised show. I THINK! Don't mark me on it.
Yeah, it's a damn shame, once again, fleeting fad based music and the might dollar rules the day, but because the greatest Jazz thanks the Marsalis has been brought to the forefront by Wynton, it should continue to thrive. You'll never get the huge numbers for classical music and the timeless jazz music, but it is an art form that isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Beiber, Timberlake who will be listening to them in 100yrs time. Wynton, Duke, Armstrong, Mozart, not going anywhere.

The great Phil Bowler plays Bass on the original recording of Think of One - He's on numerous tracks and should be recognized.

@PalabraViva3 if it is true that's really a shame...stuff like this needs to be shown to the mainstream public more often
