@mpastva This is indeed a great perfomance of one our best pianist alive...but this is nothing compared to listen him live in concert hall....in concert hall you can't breath anymore...the tension is 100 times more intense...I loved listening him in concert hall...:)
@BnPire Last year he played in Belgrade, but unfortunately I found out too late for that concert :( I hope that I will have the opportunity to hear hime alive next time.
The pianist is very talented, but unfortunately also very vain. Instead of improvising on the symphony, he arranges motives of Beethoven to a collection of impressive phantasies. In themselves, they are despite their sentimentality quite beautiful, but they do not reflect the spirit of the symphony.
This is closer to what earlier audiences heard than any other performance I've encountered - virtuoso playing, improvisation, going off on tangents - exactly what a cadenza used to be before they became set in stone.

Quite ugly cadenza...
The cadenza Brendel plays is Beethoven's original one. It seems a good idea to me to stick to Beethoven's own cadenzas if you're not another genius. :-)
The Cadenza is composed by Fazil Say himself. The similarity of the cadenza to his "Kumru Ballade" (at 1.31 - 1.44) is very obvious. The ending part of the cadenza is nearly played like a lullaby (at 2.05 - 2.37), but very well integrated into the following part. Furthermore I like his strong and fast playing of the piano concerto. The version of Abbado Brendel (without a cadenza) is played too slow, for my taste. Fazil Say is a great pianist and composer.

How funny, - in the middle section, Schubert pops up to play with the kids in Fazils kindergarten, - until the old lion (Beethoven) paws at the door.

Guess what, this guy is a genius. He composed his own concertos and so many other pieces. How many concertos did you compose?

I found a good version of Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3. But i cant post it, so this is how you'll find it:
go to:
M O N T E V E R D I . T V / R C O
and then navigate to 'watch movies'. Its the first one on the list.
Also, this christmas, on the 25th, there will be a live internet broadcast of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra there.
You're all welcome ;).
