We would sit on the hood of our car with some burgers and drinks, this was sunday afternoon entertainment. I am wondering why the fuck some pilots don´t ever come out of the crab by sideslipping into the wind like we were taught when we flew 172s....it don´t require much...just rudder to center the nose and a bit of aileron...what´s so wrong with that.....

@navmanaged You don't do that with wide-bodies... Unlike the 172's and other small ones, the airliners main landing gears are made for these types of landings. You bring the aircraft down on the runway, then you apply rudders to center the nose.

The techniques used by airliners are crab until just before touchdown or the "partial wing low method" In fact the 737 publishes maximum crosswind components for a zero crab landings, which means those are allowed. I am aware of the landing gear design, but that compensates for a small part of the crab on touchdown not all of it. Landing in a crab is recommended during wet rwy operations tho, which has a reason.

@Brenda1371 yes. if the wind blows perpendicular to the runway the plane must be pointed into the wind so that it's ground track is parallel to the runway. then the pilot must straighten the plane at the last moment so as not to damage the undercarriage. Each plane has a maximum cross wind it can land in.
