this is probably the best and most personal & emotional version of this song, ever. even better than her huge hit with it. certainly closest to how k.k. felt when writing it. stripped down to bare knuckle hitch-hikin' a ride down the interstate wondering how you'll ever make a living from your restless poetic soul when your mama just wants you to be a simple college professor and lead a normal life...lol.
This is by far her best version of the song imo. I've like the way Crystal Bowersox built on the song,,,which seemed different and better. (she never wouldn have done it without janis creating it though...props go to janis for that...) This is closer but I still like the way Crystal has polished it. Its a bit apples and oranges because, as singing is such a visceral way of communication, the time and place a song was sung. Crystal's benefits from its history as a everlasting oustider song
This is amazing because she still punches the feelings through but at the same time, she sounds so mellow and laid back. It's also easier to understand what she's saying.... lol
One of the best performers ever. I can listen to her sing but you have to be able to see her to really get the full impact. And like almost all truly great singers, her live recordings are much better than the same songs' "studio versions". I just wish i had gotten a chance to SEE her live, but she died when i was only 10. Thanks Janis and i hope wherever you are you are at peace.
pure heart and soul for everyone that gets it!
