  • 140 people are Tom Waits fans.

  • Adoro questo brano, è meraviglioso e mi regala sempre una grande carica di energia. Bellissimo anche il video. Grazie!!!

  • I think they could have choosen another chick for this vid. She doesnt look like she's from Brooklin. I always amagined he was singing about an Italian/American chick. Great song though.

  • @eightday Rod likes blondes

  • Rod was, I think, trying to show a more mellow, a more mature version of himself in The Late 80's-Early 90's. This tune was quite mellow for Rod. what do you think?

  • my top 5

  • I've just watched the music video for the Tom Waits version and I have to say I like Rod's version 100 times better.

  • @59771006

Tom Waits sounds like he smoked every cigarette ever made.

  • Credits to Tom Wait!

  • This is the first music video that I remember seeing. EVER! I couldn't ask for anything better for that kind of memory. So thanks Rod!

  • I think it's a nice cover too...whatever you think about Stewart's music choices...you can't deny his voice is one of the best

  • A great cover of a great Tom Wait's song. Yet, still it must be Waits to sing it better

  • I prefer rod´s singing over tom´s mumbling anytime...

  • I hope you guys are happy with yourselves. Your dumb argueing about who sings better filled up the pages and now I can't find my own comment! alm down! You all have your opinions! If you like the Tom Waits version go listen to that and stop hating on Rod! If you like the Rod Stewart version then stay here and just don't reply! AAUGHHH NOW I'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT I SAIIID

  • Today's generation will never know great music like this. Such a shame.

  • @koolfingaz I'll second that!!!

  • Seger's version is WAY better

  • One of the best!!

  • Great song and fantastic video

  • Mint tune. Reminds me of my trip to New York, where I first heard it on the radio in a store. Got back to London and looked it up.

  • Tom Waits did it better.

  • It's not a terrible cover, but doesn't compare to Waits' original

  • don't understand why so many people think this is a bad cover

  • what a song

  • my friend andrea platt is singing at my kitchen table with a very big smile on her face listening to rod what a man to make a woman smile like she is !!!!! xx

  • Shite.

  • I like so much this song. And Rod is like Malcolm´s father (Hal), or Hal is like Rod jajajaa

  • This brings back FANTASTIC memories of Christmas 1989, 10th grade, and everything was right in the world. :)

  • great song...went outside and waited for the train to come, then remembered we don't have a train in this town;)

  • I34ppl are Tom Wait fans. I however am a Rod Stewart fan, love this song and he sings it with heart..

  • HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ROD!!

    (January 10th)

  • Awesome.Song! i.Love the style! ww Ameri-CANs .info - added it to our MCD-T-Index at AvailanetUSA com - Rod Stewart just Rock's!

  • They need to play this more often on the radio... it's to bad that my generation is growing up without Rod!

  • @LueySapphire94 False ! I'm 19, and I love Rod Stewart and this kind of music ! Nothing better than the 80's !

  • @LueySapphire94 i agree

  • I feel so much when I hear this song... I'm writing a story with a wedding and having this song play... and have the hero ask his best friend(The heroine) to ask for the first time. (Her cousin's wedding by the way.

  • When I go to US next year, this song is saved to be listened on the streets and train...Here in Brazil, this song is famous and too much listened on radios, mainly at night!!

  • i love this song. i could listen to this all the time

  • the girl in the video is totally NOT the girl in the song! lol

  • 134 ppl road the uptown train

  • His covers are incredible -- live version of "Have I told you lately that I love you" is amazing too-better than the original ...

  • When i see you tonight.

    On the Downtown Train.

    Every Night ....Every Night.

    I just to stay.

    On the Downtown Train....

    It's in my heart.

  • Incredible......i like this song

  • a very good version of this fantastic song.

I also like of course TOM WAITS very much but also PATTY SMYTH has a fantastic version.

I dont understand why several people say : one version is perfect and all other

are not good : i say : dont talk, open your ears and mind and listen and enjoy all versions!!

  • Absolutely brilliant Rod.....please do not do not do not and do not talk about one Tom Waits.....Rod forever!!

  • What an EVER-GREEN Rockstar you are!!!!!

  • How can 131 pustules dislike this? This song is the best!!

  • 15th time I listened to it tonight...it's magical! Just doesn't wear out!

  • Covers often don't work well but Rod Stewart bringing his passion to the poetry of Tom Waits produced a classic here.

  • @hihellohowareyou1000 that's fair; I actually spent my teens listening to a lot of death metal and that really contributed to my tolerance for rough and unusual vocal approaches. If you think Tom Waits' voice is rough, try listening to Craig Pillard. That said though, I can understand why some folks find Waits' voice off-putting, I just wish he got more attention.

As for new music though, I'd urge you to check out Kurt Vile and The War on Drugs' new albums from this year, they're both great.

  • @hihellohowareyou1000 Tom Waits for one, even if you don't like his current output, his 80s releases are classics. I will readily admit there was a gap in quality in the last 3 decades, but things are picking up. Musicians like Kurt Vile, The War on Drugs, The National, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver, Radical Face, Blitzen Trapper, Bon Iver, William Elliott Whitmore, Damien Jurado, Sufjan Stevens, PJ Harvey and M. Ward have all been putting out compelling new music.

  • @hihellohowareyou1000 there's nothing wrong with that phrase as Stewart isn't particularly unique. His voice is slightly raspy, but it's still fairly bland and uninteresting. He consistently plays things safe with what he writes and, as such, rarely takes the risks required to generate something that's truly interesting. He's not unpleasant, but he isn't terribly interesting either. He's just sort of there.

  • ta bien cheber el video ...

  • Rods moves in this video and the way his hair responds to them is incredible

  • only rod stewert could make a tom waits song into an 80's cheesy powerballad and for that he deserves maximum respect

  • The raspy, gravelly, growling and whisky sodden voice of Tom Waits is eternally beautiful and mature enough to sing this masterpiece. Period.

    Waits forever!

  • Who wrote this? Tom Waits

    Who composed it? Tom Waits.

That settles the question of who wins, because it is TOM WAITS who brought this into existence in the very first place.

  • Rod Stewart: butchering Tom Waits songs since 1989.

  • @FaithPuppeteers

Tom Waits is TOO raspy. He sounds like he smoked ALL of the cigarettes. If it got worse, he'd be Ned from South Park.

  • @dynelol I can understand that and, while I don't really agree, I think that's fair. I think Waits has considerably more power and a bit more range than guys like Stewart though. I don't think Stewart could pull off a song like Come On Up to the House or Hell Broke Luce.

Or it could just be that all the death metal I listened to in my teens increased my tolerance for vocalists with raspy voices.

  • I dont believe Tom Waits does a better rendition of this song. If he had, then he would have been the one to sing it at the American Music Awards.

  • @weathernco

Tom Waits is TOO raspy. It's like several lifetimes of cigars lead to his voice. If it was more severe, it would be Ned from South Park.

  • @weathernco Keep in mind that Rod Stewart is infinitely more popular than Tom Waits. Probably a contributing factor

  • @weathernco popularity =/= quality.

  • ROD'S MUSIC WILL LIVE ON FOREVER, JUST LIKE THAT OF VAN"THE MAN" MORRISON! BOTH CELTIC, SO AM I ! HAHA

  • They say when a man is in love and in the throes of raw passion and emotion. poetry flows like water and dreams are brought to life in words, art, and song. This song is one such dream brought to life by RS.

  • Rob Stewart has the same mullet that Mel Gib rocked in Lethal Weapon around this era

  • No other can sing this better.

  • the add was actually really good i watched it all

  • Tom Waits is MUCH better! People don't understand that actually he's got a great voice and it does sound good

  • You guys just aren't cultured enough to understand why this song is better when it sounds like it's being sung by a wood chipper filled with magma. The original is pretty obscure, you probably never heard of it

  • honestly... how freaking great of singer is Rod Stewart.. He's up there with the best.

  • wish i could spot rod stewart next time i take a downtown train.

  • Each time I ride the downtown train, I remember this song and keep on looking for Brooklyn girls, but I can't find them because I'm ain't in Brooklyn!

  • Magnifique.....

  • fantastic

  • difficile de choisir une meilleure,...

à chaque titre "la fan" dit "j'adore" lol

    Rod Je T'Aime des 60's aux 2000's....

    reste encore, longtemps.....

  • Best Rod Stewart song in my view. And the girl in the video is rather nice too!

  • There was a small town girl I loved and she moved to St Louis. I think about her when I see this video. I hope she is safe and happy...

And yeah, fuck NME. This cover is decent.

  • This song makes me up and going and really happy! LOVE THIS SONG thumbs upp!!

  • just play it again

  • Shut the fuck up NME. This belongs no where near the 30 worst covers of all time!!!

  • One of my favs of all tme.

  • ....I don't get why this made NME's top worst covers list...surely there are worse covers than this?....coked out Rod in the 80's did some of his best work...he needs to stop doing covers....well he is still making babies and marrying leggy blondes...

  • No Song By Him I Love More. Glorious!

  • this is much much much better than the original!!!!

  • @vashtech1 Hmmm... perhaps... if one was completely tone-deaf, and preferred to listen to assclowns like Stewaert (Michael Bolton in drag) ruin songs written by better musicians. For the rest of us qwho appreciate the genius of Waits without it being watered-down (pissed on) by Stewart... we will listen to the original. It is just better.

  • @vashtech1 really?

  • OK you people that are dissing Rod's version of this! SHUT UP!!! I LUV Rod's cover songs more than the originals. No offense to the original artists. This is the song Rod sang when I met him at Caesars August 27th this year. My mom and I sat 8th row aisle and I got up to take his picture and when i got closer to him he motioned for me to get closer! Just then before I knew it he takes me by the hand and I'm on stage with him and hes singing to me!!!!! ILL NEVER 4 GET IT!

  • This is just brilliant. Rod is the only artist I know who can cover a song and they are far superior to the original version.

  • ¡Me encanta está canción, un tanto nostalgica....me recuerda mi epoca de estudiante en bachilleres!, Gracias por compartir el video!!!!!...

  • the rumour is that Rod met Bob Segar at a function and each asked what the others current projects were.Segar mentioned that he was negotiating obtain the rights to re-record this song. Stewart stole the idea and decided to outbid him for the song.

  • if you don't like the way he sing it then go blow your self

  • .....

  • lol hilarious idk why when people see something they don't like they just go APE SHIT lol i'm laughing my ass off at these comments it reminds me of that spongebob episode when squidward goes back in time to the caveman years and he plays his clarinet and spongebob and patrick fuck the whole place up

  • I prefer the Patty Smythe version best.

  • FUCK HIM, TOM WAITS FTW

  • HOLY SHIT EVERYBODY. Just calm down. You either like this song or you like the Tom Waits version. IF YOU DON'T LIKE THIS SONG GO LISTEN TO SOMEONE ELSE SING IT. Just stop hatin' on Rod Stewart.

  • @Sofrie333 thank you lol

  • This is so fucked up from the original .......... cabaret mush..... X factor anyone!!

  • Rod hit #3 in Billboard, 1-27-90. God bless ya, for postin' it. Thanx! Have a great weekend!

  • He fucking ruins this. Listen to the Tom Waits original.

  • All you people say this clip is gay.......It was the 80s! This is how it was! I had to live through it!

  • @ImConda NO!!!! Thats how it was for YOU :-)

  • This is truly the essence of what made mid-career Rod Stewart so awful. You do a cover of a song called "Downtrain Train" and set it it - literally - around a series of trains? Is no metaphor or image safe?

  • I like the song, but this video is pretty gay - why are there people standing around under the train tracks playing the violin? I don't even hear a violin in the song.

  • Tom wait is one of the worst singers Ive ever heard it sounds like he has a hairball in his throat!!

  • Excelente!!!!!!!!

  • I wish more Scottish singers would let their accents shine through...

  • I love this song, that voice!

  • wow look at NJ Transit!!!

  • This is one of my favourite songs recorded by Rod Stewart:) - Warm Wishes - Denise

  • Tom Waits version is waaaaay better. But this isn't bad.

  • how can anyone not like this song or hot rod

  • Thanks for an amazing show last night Rod, you're amazing! My favoruite song of him, that I sued to listen to when I was 12 years old!!

  • Cheesy? This is the best version, imo.

  • Ehhh....It's not a terrible version, but compared to Tom Waits' original it just feels cheesy and phony with all this orchestration.

  • rod your music will never never die

  • this song reminds me of my ex girlfriend she was an awsome girl i met her not on a subway but on a bus we had some nice warm moments i will forever miss you Katelyn O'Hagan

  • @mbarana100 you dumbfuck, you don't post her name like that...

  • @InfinityParamount hey shut up idiot don't be calling people an idiot online behind a computer don't you have anything better to do I LOVE YOU MBARANA100 MY DEAR COUSIN AND SORRY TO HERE ABOUT YOUR LOSE

  • @TheMnarana lmao....say you love him to him. not on my reply you bitch.

  • Ok, how are there dislikes, seriously this is incredible.

  • Without a doubt, Rod Stewart's version of this song is far away the best. His vocals, the use of classical instrumentation add to a composite and excellent presentation. Rod has always been one of my favorite artists and his rendition of this classic only adds to his reputations as a premier singer and songwriter.

  • UNO DE LOS MEJORES TEMAS DE ROD....EXCELENTE...PARA REVIVIR LA GLORIOSA DECADA DE LOS 80......ROD IS THE BEST..!!!!FROM ARGENTINA JAVIER FUNES

  • Thanks to Tom for writing this song, thank to Rod for singing it. I have always loved Downtown Train since i was twelve.

  • Eh, I love the Tom Waits classic, and Rod Stewart's covers weren't always too degrading to the original tunes, such as People Get Ready, but the cheesy pop sound doesn't really fit with Waits' reminiscent imagery and complex storyline.

  • Only a cylon would not like this song.

  • I don't like tom waits version. His voice sounds funny. I much prefer Rod's.

  • tom waits is better =/ still good tho

  • @dumbledizzle erm , no

  • Great song, great voice raspy and gravely a classic.

  • NO ARTIST CAN SING COVER VERSION BETTER THAN ROD! REAL GENIUS,BORN TO ENTERTAINED!!!!!

  • ich liebe ihn danke

  • If you think I f*ck up this song, c'mon sugar let me know !!! He deserves nothing less than the bullet for this non-performance ! Keep your hands of Tom Waits song, you poor little singer !

  • great!!

  • So glad i re-discovered this gem. A gorgeous song that is slightly different in it's own way, depending on who is singing (stewart, Waits, Seger).

  • Brings back memories of coming home from a Marine Corps deployment in 1989 and wondering if I'd managed to screw my life up beyond repair. This song has such a bittersweetness to it that it captured my feelings about life and love at the time.

  • The dark haired girl playing the violin looks like a Brooklyn girl...my kind of girl............

  • This is my favorite Rod Stewart's song.

  • why are there violins rocking out in this clip?

  • I like the way he says ' Train ' :)

  • whats wrong with the uptown train?

  • I love Rod Stewarts version but every time I hear it I have to listen to Tom Waits version... I love them both but Tom is Gold...

  • @deewkay1 Waits sings like crap!

  • @rhaydon6784 everybody can have an opinion. you are entitiled to yours even if it doesn't matter to anyone.

  • @deewkay1 But can you honestly sit there and tell me that Waits has a good voice? Not even close to Stewart's.

  • @rhaydon6784 your response is a reflection of your attitude.. Tom is fantastic his voice is his unique.. No one sounds like him you are being to superficial and not hearing the man.. Bob Dylan doesn't have a great voice but he is unique too.

  • I love this song

  • WHAT A LOVELY SONG ABOUT A STALKER... YAY :o)

  • @communistjesus you got there first

  • @communistjesus was thinking the same

  • THis is such a wonderful cong. He does a great job.
